at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father, the Son at that time announcing the Father's name to those who have become his brothers; for he alone has come in the name of the Father, so that the holy name of God may be magnified over all. We learn to say in prayer, 'Hallowed be your name.' just as the hallowed name of God does not become holy from being profane but is shown to be such, so it is not magnified by growth, as if becoming great from small, but by its majesty being revealed. 1205 Ps 137,3 He who prays without ceasing and does this in spirit and in mind, saying, 'I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the mind also,' each day has God hearkening, concerning whom it is written, 'But he hearkens to the prayers of the righteous,' and 'The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer.' And he prays to have God as a guardian who does not neglect nor despise him but greatly cares for him in his providential power. 1206 Ps 137,4.5 Because they mind earthly things and seek things below and temporary, they are called 'Peoples of the earth,' concerning whom the prophecy here speaks, and the reason for my wanting them all the words of your mouth which you spoke in the law and the prophets concerning their calling—for even if they are not hearers of your oracles, yet by power, inasmuch as their faith was foreknown, they have heard them. Therefore I also wish to come to them by singing melodiously and musically in your ways, that is, the scriptures, which one travelling through by study and continuous practice may sing in them, proclaiming the thoughts from them. But if one also calls the virtues the ways of the Lord, one travelling these also sings victory odes against those who formerly worked wickedness in them. or he sings in the ways of the Lord who is able to give an account for each virtuous action, emitting a melodious sound through the very deeds according to them. But all these things will be accomplished, since great also is the Lord's glory that perfects these things, about which it is said to Jerusalem, 'And the glory of the Lord has risen upon you,' and 'All flesh shall see the salvation of our God,' since the glory of the Lord shall be seen. And who might this be but the Savior, being the radiance of the glory of God and the express image of his person? Instead of 'Peoples', 'Kings' is rendered thus: 'Let all the kings of the earth confess to you, O Lord.' And both words are in agreement, because the peoples who confess to the Lord are called to reign, to be a royal priesthood and a holy nation; whence it is also written by one of them, 'And I would that you did reign, that we also might reign with you.' 1207 Ps 137,6 These things must be said not only concerning the Father but also concerning the Son, who holds power over all things that have come into being through him and subsist in him, of whom he is also before all things; whence also the name 'Almighty' is assigned to him, as in Zechariah the prophet. If, then, some of the lowly things which the high Lord regards are lofty for the heavenly nature or even for that which has transcended it, yet even these he knows from afar, being distant from him by the difference of their being. 1208 Ps 137,8a Similar to this is the apostolic saying which goes thus: 'Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to wrath; for we know him who said, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay," says the Lord.' 1209 Ps 137,8c That is, do not overlook us humans, as unseen enemies are murderously disposed against us.
1210 Ps 138,3a In which, making progress, I press on toward what is ahead, until
I may attain to the prize of the upward call. 1211 Ps 138,5 It is not at all wonderful if you knew all things concerning me, he says; for indeed you understand all things, not simply observing them
