having remained for 40, he made only years; for in the forty-second year of Augustus he was born. And he says that twelve days before the Kalends of July or June—I cannot say—in the consulship of Sulpicius Cammarinus † and Vettius Pompeianus, consuls, she conceived; and this I also considered, that those who stated the day of the conception and how Gabriel announced the good news to the virgin, said this on account of the suspicion of some † saying in tradition that he was born after seven months. For we have found from this † proposon until the eleventh of Tybi and eight days before the Ides of January, when the Theophany truly happened and he was born, a period of seven months according to the lunar course, less four days. Therefore, if you should find these things written somewhere in the marginal notes, do not be mistaken about the information. For in reality the certain birth of Christ is on the eleventh of Tybi. But some say that he was carried in the womb for ten months less 14 days and eight hours, so as to be nine months and fifteen days and four hours, 2.301 alluding to that which was said by Solomon, “in a ten-month period, curdled in blood.” Nevertheless, it has been shown from all quarters that on the eleventh of Tybi according to the Egyptians the aforementioned incarnate birth of the Lord occurred. And around this eleventh day, thirty years later, the first sign occurred in Cana of Galilee, when the water became wine. 30. For which reason also in many places up to the present day this happens on account of the divine sign that occurred then as a testimony to the unbelievers, as springs and rivers in many places testify, being changed into wine; namely the spring of Cibyra, the city of Caria, at the hour when the deacons drew water and he said “give it to the master of the feast”; and the spring in Gerasa of Arabia likewise testifies; for we ourselves have drunk from the one in Cibyra, and our brothers from the spring in Gerasa which is at the shrine. And many in Egypt also testify to this concerning the Nile. Therefore on the eleventh of Tybi according to the Egyptians, all draw water and store it up in Egypt itself and in many countries. 2.302 For so it is found that after the twelfth of Athyr, having departed and been tempted for forty days and having come to Nazareth and having remained for about two weeks and three days, he went down to the Jordan to John and passed the first and second day and returned to Nazareth and remained likewise the first and second day and on the third day went out to Cana of Galilee, so that all 60 days from the baptism were fulfilled, forty of the temptation and the two weeks and two days in Nazareth and the other two, and on the third the sign of the water at the wedding occurred. Afterwards he came to Capernaum and performed other things, as we have often said, and having gone up again to Nazareth, he read the book of Isaiah the prophet. Wherefore they say, “Do here also the signs that we heard you did in Capernaum”; and later, having come again to Capernaum, he crossed over from there to the lake, that is, the sea of Gennesaret, and Peter and his companions were completely chosen, and so from there he connected the entire fulfillment of the preaching. For according to the sequence, as we said, after the 40 days and the other two weeks and two days in Nazareth, he was with John the first day and the next; and after he returned from him to Nazareth and remained from the tenth hour until evening, and on the other day went out and met2.303 Philip, which is two days, then the gospel shows the unchangeable aspect of the accuracy through the first two, which he remained after arriving, saying “On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee,” which was a symbol of the church; for on the third day of his sojourn in the heart of the earth, which † in the earth he made after the
