they plotted death. "And they fought against me without a cause. [d.] Instead of loving me, they slandered me." For not only did they experience no evil from me, but they also enjoyed countless good things; for which they ought to have loved me, they did the deeds of enemies. "But I prayed." And of this the history of the holy Gospels is a witness. For nailed to the wood of the cross, he cried out: "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." e. "And they set against me evil for good, and hatred for my love." I, therefore, showered them with benefits; but they repaid me with the opposite. '. "Set a sinner over him, and let the devil stand at his right hand." `Set`, instead of `you will set`; and `let him stand`, instead of `he will stand`; and this the divine evangelist clearly taught us. For the divine John asked who the traitor was; and the Lord said: "It is he to whom I shall give the morsel when I have dipped it; and having dipped it, he says, he gave it to Judas; and after the morsel, Satan entered into him," having found the entrances ready. For of his own accord he went to the Jews and made the agreements for the betrayal, and though showered with many benefits after this, he remained ungrateful. Willingly, therefore, he received the enemy as a housemate. g. "When he is judged, may he go forth condemned [instead of, he will go forth]. And may his prayer become sin [instead of, it will become]." For the traitor is destitute of all defense. Therefore, being judged, he is condemned, and the prayer offered by him increases the accusation. For he was not ignorant of his benefactor, but also enjoyed the divine 80.1757 words, and of the greatest miracles he became not only an eyewitness but also a perpetrator, having received the authority from him. h. "May his days be few, and may another take his office." And this prophecy received its fulfillment; for he himself immediately suffered death by hanging, and Matthias, appointed in his place, completed the number of the apostles. th. "May his children become orphans, and his wife a widow." These things happened not to Judas alone, but also to all the unbelieving Jews. For a few years after the cross, the entire race was overthrown; and some were killed, while their wives and children were enslaved. The prophetic word indeed prayed for this. i. "May his children be wanderers and vagabonds, and may they beg, and be cast out of their own dwellings." Or according to the others, from their ruins. For when the houses were burned, and became building plots or ruins, some of the inhabitants were killed, and others were carried away captive by the spear. ia. "May the creditor search out all that he has." But Symmachus has it thus: May the exactor seize all his possessions. And exactors are also the Roman emperors, collecting the imposed tribute. These plundered all the possessions of the Jews, searching accurately, so as to find and appropriate even the hidden things. "And let strangers plunder his labors. [ib.] Let there be no one to help him, nor let there be any to pity his orphans." And when these things happen, and the enemies are distributing their belongings, there will be no one to help them, nor will their children be deemed worthy of mercy. ig. "Let his children be for destruction, in one generation may his name be blotted out." For before forty years had passed, the people of the Jews suffered utter destruction, and they no longer govern themselves, nor do they have their own kings and rulers, nor that much-fabled metropolis, nor do they perform the worship according to the law, but all those things have vanished: both the ark, and the tablets, and the figures of the Cherubim, and the mercy seat, and the lampstand, and the altar, and the high-priestly vestment, and all the other things which were God-given among them and renowned. id.
