have you become desolate, and lost a protector? But never say this; for you have not lost God; so that, as long as you have him, he himself will be to you greater than father, and child, and kinsman. For even when they were living, it was he who did all things. Therefore, consider these things, and say according to David: The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? Say, You are the Father of orphans, and judge of widows, and draw his help, and you will have him providing for you now more than before, inasmuch as you are in greater need. But have you lost a child? You have not lost him, do not say it; the matter is a sleep, not a death, a removal, not a destruction, a journey from lesser things to better. Do not, then, provoke God, but make him propitious. For if you bear it nobly, there will be some comfort from this for the one who has departed and for you; but if you do the opposite, you further kindle the wrath of God. For if, when a child was scourged by the master, you stood by and were vexed, you would have more greatly provoked the master against yourself. Do not, then, do this, but give thanks, so that in this way too the cloud of your despondency may be scattered; say according to that blessed man: The Lord gave, the Lord has taken away; consider how many more than you give thanks, who never received children in the first place, nor were called fathers. For neither, he says, did I wish for it; for it was better not to have the experience, than to fall away after tasting the pleasure. Do not, I beseech you, do not say these things, do not provoke the Master in this way also, but for what you have received, give thanks, and for what you do not have to the end, give glory. Job did not say that it was better not to have received, this which you say ungratefully; but he also gave thanks for those things, saying: The Lord gave; and for these things he blessed, saying: The Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord for ever. And thus he silenced his wife, reasoning with her, and uttering those wonderful words: If we have received good things from the hand of the Lord, shall we not endure the evil things? And yet after these things the trial became harsher; but he was not even so undone, but bore it nobly in like manner, and gave glory. This do you also, and reason with yourself, that it was not a man who took, but God who made, who cares for you more, and knows what is expedient, not some enemy nor plotter. See how many, while living, made life unlivable for their parents. But do you not see the noble ones, he says? 63.890 I see them too, but the circumstances of your child are safer than theirs. For even if they are well-reputed, yet the things of their end are uncertain; but for him, you no longer fear nor tremble, lest he suffer anything, or undergo some change. Consider these things also in the case of a good and domestic wife, and for all things give thanks to God; and if you lose a wife, give glory; perhaps God wishes to lead you to continence, and calls you to greater contests, he has wished to free you from the bond. Tell me now, if while we were seated the king sent someone to call us to the palace, would we need to weep and lament, tell me? Angels are present, sent from the heavens, and have come from there, sent by the King himself to call their fellow servant, and you weep, tell me? do you not know what a mystery is taking place? how awesome and terrible and truly worthy of hymns and praises? Do you wish to learn, so that you may know that it is not a time for tears? for it is a very great mystery of the wisdom of God. As if leaving a house, the soul goes forth, hastening to its own Master; and you mourn? Then you ought to do this also when a child is born; for this is a birth much better than that one; for it goes forth to another light, it is released as if from a prison, it departs as from a contest. Yes, he says; you say these things well concerning the well-reputed. What then is it to you, O man, that you do not do this even for the well-reputed? For tell me, what could you condemn in the little child? on what account do you mourn him? what of the newly-enlightened? for he too has come to the same state. On what account do you mourn, tell me? For just as a pure sun rises, so too a soul a body
