having spoken he added: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me. It would be clear to those who do not hold the opinion that the Christ of God is either a mere man, or a Word without flesh and without a body, having partaken of nothing of mortal nature. But they say that he is at once both God and man; God in that he is "the only-begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father," and man in that he is understood to have been born "of the seed of David according to the flesh." Therefore, indeed, God the Word, who is spoken of literally through the prophecy, along with the other promises he has made, also added this, saying: I the Lord will gather them at the appointed time. Then he presents the man whom he had assumed, introducing him as saying: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me. And it has often been shown through what has gone before, how "the Spirit of God has rested upon him who is from the root of Jesse," "and the spirit of wisdom and understanding, and the spirit of counsel and might, and the spirit of knowledge and godliness." Hence, our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ is fittingly recorded in the Gospel according to Luke as having taught that the prophecy was fulfilled in him, when "he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and he went into the synagogue, as his custom was, on the sabbath day, and stood up to read. And the book of the prophet Isaiah was delivered to him, which he opened and found: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor, he has sent me, to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. When he had closed the book and given it back to the attendant, he sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them that today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth." And paying attention to the time indicated by the phrase, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled," you would find that at that very time, "after he was baptized in the Jordan, the Holy Spirit, descending in the form of a dove," "remained on him." Then "he was led up into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil"; then "coming to Nazareth he read" the aforementioned prophecy. Wherefore he accurately added: "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." For at that very time, "when the Holy Spirit descended on him in the form of a dove," the prophecy spoken in his own person was fulfilled: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me; for he would not have been said to be anointed with a bodily anointing in the same way as the men of old; for he would have had nothing exceptional, if he had been anointed in the same way as other men. But now, having received the anointing with the Holy Spirit, he is shown to be exceptional beyond all and the only-begotten Christ of God. And the words, "He has sent me to preach good news to the poor," were fulfilled at that time, when "preaching the kingdom of heaven" he also offered the beatitudes to his disciples, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven," but he also healed the brokenhearted, ministering to them with the promises, through which he said: "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted," and "Blessed are those who weep, for they shall laugh." And already he also preached release to the gentiles whose souls were held captive by invisible and spiritual enemies, commanding his disciples and saying: "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit," through which he brought about the forgiveness of their former impieties. Thus, therefore, he both preached release to the captives and proclaimed recovery of sight to those suffering from blindness, inasmuch as they were enslaved to polytheistic error, and he called "the acceptable year of the Lord" that which he himself made his own year for the whole time during which, spending his time with men, days of light to those with him
