all the comely order that adorned the whole nation, he threatens to take away at one time, saying: “And I will cut off the three shepherds in one month, and my soul will be weary of them,” 10.4.25 for which Aquila says: “and my soul was shortened in them,” but Symmachus: “and I grew impatient with them,” and Theodotion: “and my soul grew impatient with them.” And he teaches the reason for this impatience, adding: “for their souls also roared against me,” for which again Aquila [says]: “and indeed their soul loathed me,” 10.4.26 but Symmachus: “and their soul strove with me.” And similar to “for their souls also roared against me” spoken by the Seventy is found in Jeremiah from the person of the Lord, the statement: “I have forsaken my house, I have left my heritage; I have given the beloved of my soul into the hands of her enemies. My heritage has become to me like a lion in the forest; she has given her voice against me. Is my heritage to me a den of a hyena?” 10.4.27 Therefore, on account of these things, it is fitting that he adds in sequence, saying: “And I said, I will not shepherd you. What is dying, let it die; and what is failing, let it fail; and let the rest devour, each one the flesh of his neighbor.” After which he adds: “And I will take my good staff, and I will cast it away,” 10.4.28 for which Aquila [says]: “And I took,” he says, “my staff, comeliness, and I cut it,” that is, the worship according to Moses. Therefore the first staff, the one at the beginning of the oracle, is said to be the first to be broken and cast away. 10.4.29 But when the price of him that was priced and the silver given for him to the traitor was cast “into the house of the Lord” as “into a furnace,” then indeed also concerning the second staff, that is, of the whole nation, what it will suffer is prophesied accordingly in the words, “and I cast away the second staff, the cord, to scatter the covenant between Judah and between Israel.” 10.4.30 And since the oracle clearly signified their rejection through these things, it is fitting that he says in sequence that no longer would they recognize the power of the prophecies, but the Canaanites, saying: “And the Canaanites, the sheep kept for me, will know, because it is the word of the Lord.” 10.4.31 And who would be the Canaanites but us, who were once foreigners and from all the godless and impious nations of old kept as sheep for Christ? We who also through his grace have been changed and understanding what has been divinely ordained have received true knowledge of the word of the Lord, and we have known, we the Canaanites, and have understood the things being signified; but they did not know nor understand, those who boast in Israel and are exalted in the seed of Abraham. 10.5.1 From Jeremiah. “The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, with a point of diamond, engraved on the breast of his heart, and on the horns of your altars. When their children remember their altars and their groves on a leafy tree and on high hills, I will give your strength and all your treasures for plunder, and your high places in sin in all your borders. And you will be removed and abased from the inheritance which I gave you, and I will bring you among your enemies in the land which you did not know, for a fire has been kindled in my wrath, it shall burn forever.” 10.5.2 Although not in the Septuagint, yet having found these things in the Hebrew and in the editions of the other translators, and moreover, with the addition of asterisks and in the accurate copies of the Septuagint, we have necessarily set them forth, as they also name the traitor Judah and teach that the sin committed by him is indelible. For this seems to me to be hinted at by “the sin of Judah is inscribed with an iron pen, with a diamond point.” 10.5.3 And it might also be referred to the whole nation of the Jews, to whom, in sequence and accordingly, after their indelible
