having denied the many wicked demons who long reigned over them, they confess the one lord and king of themselves, and how the lord who was formerly known only to the Hebrews will become king of all the nations from the whole earth who have believed in him, and “his name will be one, encircling all the earth and the desert.” 10.7.9 And who, seeing this very thing, would not be amazed? For from the appellation of Christ (and Christ himself was the lord) the name of the Christians has encircled every place and city and country and even the nations inhabiting the deserts and the uttermost parts of the earth, in accordance with the oracles of the prophecy. 10.8.1 From Psalm 21. “For the end, concerning the morning help. O God, my God, attend to me, why have you forsaken me? Far from my salvation are the words of my transgressions. My God, I will cry to you by day and will you not hear? and by night, and not for foolishness to me. But you dwell in the holy places, the praise of Israel. In you our fathers hoped; they hoped and you delivered them. They cried to you and were saved; in you they hoped, and were not put to shame. 10.8.2 But I am a worm and not a man, a reproach of men and an outcast of the people. All those who see me have mocked me, they have spoken with their lips, they have shaken their head: He hoped in the Lord, let him deliver him; let him save him, because he wants him, because you are the one who drew me from the womb, my hope from my mother’s breasts. On you I was cast from the womb. From my mother's womb you are my God. Do not depart from me, because affliction is near, because there is no one to help. 10.8.3 Many calves have encircled me, fat bulls have surrounded me. They opened their mouth against me, like a lion seizing and roaring. I have been poured out like water, and all my bones have been scattered. My heart has become like wax melting in the midst of my belly. My strength has dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue has cleaved to my throat, and you have brought me down into the dust of death. Because many dogs have encircled me, an assembly of evildoers has surrounded me. 10.8.4 They have pierced my hands and my feet. They have numbered all my bones; and they have observed and looked upon me. They divided my garments among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots. But you, O Lord, do not remove your help far away; attend to my aid. Rescue my soul from the sword, and my only-begotten from the hand of the dog. Save me from the mouth of the lion, and my humiliation from the horns of unicorns. 10.8.5 I will declare your name to my brothers; in the midst of the church I will sing praise to you. You who fear the Lord, praise him; all the seed of Jacob, glorify him. Let all the seed of Israel fear him. Because he has not despised nor been vexed with the supplication of the poor, nor has he turned his face away from me, and when I cried to him he heard me. From you is my praise in the great church; I will pay my vows before those who fear him. 10.8.6 The poor shall eat and be filled, and those who seek him shall praise the Lord. 10.8.7 Their hearts shall live forever and ever. All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will worship before him. Because the kingdom is the Lord’s, and he rules over the nations. All the rich of the earth have eaten and worshiped; all those who go down into the earth will fall down before him. And my soul lives for him; and my seed will serve him. The coming generation will be announced to the Lord, and they will announce his righteousness to a people yet to be born, whom the Lord has made.” 10.8.8 The saying “O God, my God, attend to me, why have you forsaken me?”, spoken at the beginning of the psalm, is thus spoken according to Matthew by our Savior at the time of the passion: “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour, and at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a voice
