thus nothing is so highly regarded by God as being thankful, and not only in prosperous times, but also when things are going adversely. This is especially a sacrifice; this is the greatest offering. Thus Job was proclaimed, thus Paul, thus Jacob; thus each of the righteous demonstrated his gratitude and thanksgiving to God, especially in difficult times. Let us do this too, and remain always giving thanks, that we may also obtain the eternal good things; which may it be granted to all of us to obtain, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the power, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen. ON THE 116TH PSALM. Praise the Lord, all you nations; praise him, all you peoples. For his mercy is confirmed upon us, and the truth of the Lord remains forever. 1. It is surely clear to everyone that what has been said is a prophecy of the Church of the believers, and a proclamation in advance of the preaching that has taken possession of the whole inhabited world. For the psalm calls not just one and two and three nations, but all land and sea. which indeed has happened, when the presence of Christ shone forth. Then he also states the cause of salvation, that they were saved not from their own achievements, nor from their life and boldness, but from loving-kindness alone. For his mercy, he says, was confirmed upon us; 55.328 that is, it was fixed, it has become strong, more solid than a rock. For it increases every day. And his truth remains forever. For then especially the things of the truth shone forth. Therefore he also spoke thus, because the things of the Old [Covenant] were a type and a shadow. The evangelist, indicating this, also said: The law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. ON THE 117TH PSALM. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. 1. The verse of the psalm, which the people are accustomed to chant as a response, is something like this: This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it; and it stirs up many, and the people are especially accustomed to sing this as a response during that spiritual festival and during the heavenly feast. But let us, if you wish, go through the whole psalm from the top and from the beginning, making our exposition not from the verse of the response, but from the very preface. For the Fathers legislated that the congregation should sing the verse as a response, since it is melodious and has a certain lofty dogma, because they did not know the whole psalm, so that from this at least they might receive complete instruction. But it is necessary for us to go through it all, even if its middle parts contain much prophecy. For here it is said: The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the head of the corner. Which Christ also said to the Jews, rather enigmatically, for they were still boiling with anger, and he did not wish to kindle it; For a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoking flax he will not quench, yet he said it nonetheless.
