For according to us, God is not a body; so that we may not fall into the absurdities into which those who philosophize according to Zeno and Chrysippus fall. 8.50 But since he reproaches us for desiring the body, let him know that, if desire is a bad thing, we desire nothing; but if it is indifferent, we desire all things that God promises to the just. Thus, therefore, we both desire and hope for the resurrection of the just. But Celsus thinks we say things inconsistent with ourselves, when on the one hand we hope for the resurrection of the body, as being worthy of honor from God, and on the other, we cast it into torments as something dishonorable. Therefore, nothing is dishonorable that suffers for the sake of piety and chooses difficult circumstances for the sake of virtue, but everything is dishonorable that is consumed in pleasures with wickedness. For so says the divine word: "What seed is honorable? The seed of man. What seed is dishonorable? The seed of man." Then Celsus thinks that one ought not to dispute with those who hope for things concerning the body, as having irrationally devoted themselves to a matter in which it is impossible to obtain what they hope for, calling them rustic and impure and adhering to their faction without reason, when, as a philanthropist, he ought to help even the more rustic. For the social instinct is not circumscribed so as to exclude the more rustic of men, just as it does irrational animals, but He who made us has made us social towards all men equally. It is therefore worthwhile to dispute even with the rustic and with all one's power to lead them to what is more refined, and with the impure, and to make them, as far as possible, purer, and with those who think whatever it may be without reason and are sick in soul, so that they may no longer do anything without reason nor be sick in soul. 8.51 After this he accepts those who hope to possess eternally the soul or the mind or what is called among them the spiritual or the rational, intelligent, holy, and blessed spirit, or the living soul, and that it will be with God, and he rightly accepts the doctrine held, both concerning those who have lived well, that they will be happy, and concerning the unjust, that they will be constrained by entirely eternal evils. And I have marveled at Celsus, in view of all that is said by him, for what is thus added to the preceding statements, in which he says: And from this doctrine, let neither these men nor any other man ever depart. And he ought to have seen, writing as he does against Christians—for whom the whole foundation of their faith is God and the promises through Christ concerning the just and the teachings concerning punishment for the unjust—that a Christian who has been overthrown by accepting the arguments of Celsus against Christians is likely, in casting away the Word, to cast away also the doctrine, <οὗ>, he says, from which neither Christians nor any other man should depart. But I think that Chrysippus has acted more philanthropically than Celsus in his work *On the Therapy of the Passions*, wishing to heal the passions as things that oppress and disturb the human soul, primarily by what seemed to him to be sound arguments, but secondarily and tertiarily even by doctrines that are not pleasing; "For even if there are three," he says, "kinds of goods, the passions must still be treated, not fussing at the time of the inflammation of the passions over the preconceived doctrine of the one who is disturbed by the passion, lest by the untimely leisure for the overthrow of the doctrines that have preoccupied the soul, the available therapy should be lost." And he says that, "even if pleasure is the good, and the one overcome by passion thinks this, he must nevertheless be helped, and it must be pointed out that even for those who posit pleasure as the good and the end, every passion is inconsistent." Therefore Celsus also ought, once he had said he accepted the doctrines concerning those who have lived well, that they will be happy, and concerning the unjust, that they will be constrained by entirely eternal evils, accordingly

Οὕτως οὖν καὶ τὴν τῶν δικαίων ἀνάστασιν ποθοῦμεν καὶ ἐλπίζομεν. Νομίζει δὲ Κέλσος καὶ ἀνομολογούμενα ἡμᾶς ἑαυτοῖς ποιεῖν, ὅπου μὲν ἐλπίζουσι τὴν τοῦ σώματος ἀνάστασιν, ὡς τῆς παρὰ θεοῦ τιμῆς ἀξίου, ὅπου δὲ ῥίπτουσιν αὐτὸ εἰς κολάσεις ὡς ἄτιμον. Οὐδὲν οὖν ἄτιμον τὸ δι' εὐσέβειαν πάσχον καὶ δι' ἀρετὴν περιστάσεις αἱρούμενον, ἀλλὰ καὶ πᾶν ἄτιμον τὸ μετὰ κακίας ἐν ἡδοναῖς κατανα λισκόμενον. Φησὶ γοῦν καὶ ὁ θεῖος λόγος· "Σπέρμα ἔντιμον ποῖον; Σπέρμα ἀνθρώπου· σπέρμα ἄτιμον ποῖον; Σπέρμα ἀνθρώπου." Εἶτ' οἴεται μὴ διαλέγεσθαι δεῖν τοῖς τὰ περὶ τοῦ σώματος ἐλπίζουσιν ὁ Κέλσος ὡς συντετηκόσιν ἀλόγως πράγματι ἀδυνάτῳ τυχεῖν τῶν ἐλπιζομένων ὑπ' αὐτῶν, ἀγροίκους καὶ ἀκαθάρτους αὐτοὺς καλῶν καὶ χωρὶς λόγου συνόντας τῇ στάσει, δέον ὡς φιλάνθρωπον καὶ τοῖς ἀγροικοτέροις βοηθεῖν. Οὐδὲ γὰρ τὸ κοινωνικὸν περιγέγραπται ὥσπερ ἀπὸ τῶν ἀλόγων ζῴων οὕτω καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ἀγροικοτέρων ἀνθρώ πων, ἀλλ' ἐπ' ἴσης ὁ ποιήσας ἡμᾶς πρὸς πάντας ἀνθρώπους πεποίηκε κοινωνικούς. Ἄξιον οὖν διαλέγεσθαι καὶ ἀγροίκοις καὶ ὅση δύναμις μετάγειν αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ τὸ ἀστειότερον καὶ ἀκαθάρτοις καὶ ποιεῖν αὐτούς, ὡς οἷόν τε ἐστί, καθαρωτέρους καὶ τοῖς χωρὶς λόγου ὅ τι ποτ' οὖν φρονοῦσι καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν νοσοῦσιν, ἵνα μηκέτι χωρὶς λόγου τι πράττωσι μηδὲ τὴν ψυχὴν νοσήσωσι. 8.51 Μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα ἀποδέχεται τοὺς τὴν ψυχὴν ἢ τὸν νοῦν ἢ τὸ καλούμενον παρ' αὐτοῖς πνευματικὸν ἢ λογικὸν πνεῦμα νοερὸν ἅγιον καὶ μακάριον ἢ ψυχὴν ζῶσαν ἐλπίζοντας ἕξειν αἰώνιον, καὶ σὺν θεῷ αὐτὸ ἔσεσθαι, προσίεται δὲ ὀρθῶς νομιζόμενον καὶ τὸ μὲν περὶ τῶν εὖ βιωσάντων ὡς εὐδαι μονησόντων δόγμα περὶ δὲ τῶν ἀδίκων ὡς πάμπαν αἰωνίοις κακοῖς συσχεθησομένων. Καὶ τεθαύμακά γε τοῦ Κέλσου παρὰ πάντα τὰ λεγόμενα παρ' αὐτῷ τὸ οὕτως ἐπιφερόμενον τοῖς προειρημένοις, ἐν ᾧ φησι· Καὶ τούτου δὲ τοῦ δόγματος μήθ' οὗτοι μήτ' ἄλλος ἀνθρώπων μηδείς ποτε ἀποστῇ. Καὶ ἐχρῆν γε αὐτὸν ὁρᾶν κατὰ Χριστιανῶν γράφοντα, οἷς ἡ πᾶσα ὑπόθεσίς ἐστι τῆς πίστεως ὁ θεὸς καὶ αἱ διὰ τοῦ Χριστοῦ περὶ τῶν δικαίων ἐπαγγελίαι καὶ περὶ τῶν ἀδίκων αἱ περὶ κολάσεως διδασκαλίαι, ὅτι τὸν ἀνατραπέντα Χριστια νὸν ἐκ τοῦ παραδέξασθαι τοὺς κατὰ Χριστιανῶν τοῦ Κέλσου λόγους εἰκός ἐστιν ἀποβαλόντα τὸν λόγον συναποβαλεῖν καὶ τὸ δόγμα, <οὗ>, φησί, μήτε Χριστιανοὶ ἀποσταῖεν μήτε μηδεὶς ἄλλος ἀνθρώπων. Ἀλλὰ φιλανθρωπότερον οἶμαι Κέλσου Χρύσιππον πεποιη κέναι ἐν τῷ περὶ παθῶν θεραπευτικῷ, βουλόμενον θεραπεῦσαι τὰ πάθη ὡς κατεπείγοντα καὶ ἐνοχλοῦντα τὴν ἀνθρωπίνην ψυχὴν προηγουμένως μὲν τοῖς δοκοῦσιν αὐτῷ ὑγιέσι λόγοις δευτέρως δὲ καὶ τρίτως κἂν τοῖς μὴ ἀρέσκουσι τῶν δογμά των· "Κἂν γὰρ τρία", φησίν, "ᾖ γένη τῶν ἀγαθῶν, καὶ οὕτω θεραπευτέον τὰ πάθη, οὐ περιεργαζόμενον ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τῆς φλεγμονῆς τῶν παθῶν τὸ προκαταλαβὸν δόγμα τὸν ὑπὸ τοῦ πάθους ἐνοχλούμενον, μή πως τῇ ἀκαίρῳ περὶ τὴν ἀνατροπὴν τῶν προκαταλαβόντων τὴν ψυχὴν δογμάτων σχολῇ ἡ ἐγχωροῦσα θεραπεία παραπόληται". Φησὶ δὲ ὅτι, "Κἂν ἡδονὴ ᾖ τὸ ἀγαθόν, καὶ τοῦτο φρονῇ ὁ ὑπὸ τοῦ πάθους κρατούμενος, οὐδὲν ἧττον αὐτῷ βοηθητέον καὶ παραδεικτέον ὅτι καὶ τοῖς ἡδονὴν τἀγαθὸν καὶ τέλος τιθεμένοις ἀνομολο γούμενόν ἐστι πᾶν πάθος". Ἐχρῆν τοίνυν καὶ τὸν Κέλσον, ἅπαξ παραδέξασθαι λέγοντα τὰ περὶ τῶν εὖ βιωσάντων δόγματα ὡς εὐδαιμονη σόντων καὶ περὶ τῶν ἀδίκων ὡς πάμπαν αἰωνίοις κακοῖς συσχεθησομένων, ἀκολούθως
