And see the Lord being anointed by the Lord with the Holy Spirit, so that the Divine is understood in the Trinity. For being Lord and God by nature, according to his humanity he is anointed by the Father with the Spirit. Therefore, he is neither a mere man, since he is Lord, nor without flesh, since he is anointed, but the same is God and man, not in the same respect; as existing from David, therefore, he is said to have been anointed. For he had already said concerning the one from the root of Jesse, that is, Christ, that the Spirit had rested upon him. For it was not said that he was anointed with an ointment in the same way as those of old. For otherwise he would have nothing exceptional. And yet David said: "Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions." And as one who had already become man, he says, for which reason he anointed me. And he added the reason. And he also foretold, saying, In due time I will gather them. 2641 Therefore, as God he bestows the Spirit upon creation, and as man he receives it. Therefore, according to Luke, when he was in Nazareth he entered the Synagogue, and opening Isaiah he found this saying, and closing it, he said: Today this Scripture has been fulfilled. For at that time he happened both to be baptized, and the Spirit to descend upon him in the form of a dove; after which, having been tempted, he came to Nazareth, and declared that the Scripture had been fulfilled. But some, as has been said, say that the reference of "he has anointed me" is to the time of his birth. However, after the baptism he is seen preaching the kingdom of the heavens (which was to preach good news to the poor) and setting forth the beatitudes. And he healed the brokenhearted, curing them with promises, and saying: Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. And blessed are those who weep, for they shall laugh. And to the captives of demonic customs he preached release, saying to the disciples: Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them, clearly for the forgiveness of sins; who also suffered from blindness, serving polytheistic error. Wherefore in the preceding passages the Father said: Behold, I have set you as a light to the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out the bound from their chains. And they were poor, as suffering a lack of every good thing, having no hope, and without God in the world. Unless, then, he says that to the poor in spirit has been given the abundant supply of the gifts through him. And otherwise, the brokenhearted as those weak of heart and having one easily crushed, so as to be unable to resist the assaults of the passions, and like captives serving these; and what is said will also apply to those from Israel. For there was not on earth one who does good, not even one. Therefore all, being sons of night and darkness, have become children of light. For the day dawned for them, and the sun of righteousness rose, and a bright morning star arose. And he says he was anointed and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, thus speaking of the time of the incarnation, in which, while living on earth, he provided the light of day to those who approached him. For as to the sun of righteousness such a year was fitting. Perhaps, however, it indicates the age to come, to which he referred the things of his teaching, when "Not the sun, nor the moon, but the Lord," he says, "will be to you an everlasting light?" therefore it is called the year of the Lord, as being enlightened by him, and acceptable, or according to the rest, of good pleasure. For that is what is pleasing to God, being itself also the day of recompense, when the rewards are received by those who have labored through the present life. But some say the acceptable 2644 year is the one in which he was crucified. For then we became acceptable to God and the Father, having been made fruitful through him. Therefore, concerning the grain of wheat he said: "If it dies, it bears much fruit." And again: "When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people to myself." Therefore also, having risen from the dead, he said: All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me, sending the disciples to the nations, and the baptism, through which, having received forgiveness, we have become partakers of his divine nature. For the acceptable year those who were accepted obtained, concerning which Paul says: "Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, the day of salvation, and of recompense," that of the
