he said, showing that God had accomplished these things. Do you see, his benefaction occurred not only in the release from terrible things, but also in the acquisition of renown? For having said: The right hand of the Lord has wrought strength, he added: The right hand of the Lord has exalted me, so that he might declare the glory that had come to him. For, He has exalted me, is instead of, He has glorified. For He made them not only powerful, but also glorious. I shall not die, but live, and I will declare the works of the Lord. The dangers, he says, threatened death; but I, I shall not die, but live. That is, such is the wonder-working of the Master, that He even snatched them from death itself, and before the New [Covenant] in wondrous dangers prefigured the image of the resurrection. For He gave us riddles from the beginning, when He translated Enoch. For if you disbelieve that it is possible for bodies to rise again, believe from this. For how did that body last for so long a time? For it is not the same to raise a ruined house, and to preserve one that is decaying and old for so long a time. Do you not consider that He made things that were not? Therefore He is much more able to raise them. You have also another image of the resurrection, I mean the snatching away of Elijah, who even to this day has not died. All things are easy and simple for God. No word, it says, shall be impossible with God. And the Prophet: All that He willed, He has done. Do you not see that even for you the works of the carpenter are difficult? But nevertheless you yield to the art. Then you yield to the art of a fellow servant, but you call the wisdom of the Master to account, and do not accept what is done by faith? And of how much folly are these things worthy? I shall not die, but live. If anyone should also take what is said anagogically, he will not err. For if this was said also concerning the resurrection—for, I shall not die, means that not even death is death—nevertheless it is also understood in another way. For I shall not die, he says, the other death, which Christ also hinted at when He said: He who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live; and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. And I will declare the works of the Lord. This especially is life, to praise Him and to proclaim His wonders to all. What works? tell me. These which he is about to relate, adding: The Lord has chastened me sorely, but He has not given me over to death. Have you seen the wonder-working? have you seen the usefulness? For he not only gives thanks that he was delivered, but he also knows the greatest grace that he fell into temptation, and he speaks of the profit of the trial. What is this? The Lord has chastened me sorely, he says. This is the usefulness of dangers, that it made him better. Have you seen His power from both sides, and His care, both in allowing him to be caught in terrible things, and in delivering him again? For to death, he says, He has not given me over. And another interpreter has said well: But to death he did not give me, so that he might show 55.335 that the whole matter lay in His authority. So that he gained a twofold salvation, both the deliverance from terrible things, and that from wickedness. Wherefore Paul also said, writing to the Hebrews: But if you are without chastisement, then you are bastards, and not sons. Open to me the gates of righteousness; entering into them I will give thanks to the Lord. For those who are chastened the gates are opened, for those who put away their sins. 5. He who has been chastened can say with boldness: Open to me the gates of righteousness. For what is said must also be taken anagogically, and we must understand the gates of heaven, which are closed to the wicked, at which one must knock through virtue, through almsgiving, through righteousness. This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter into it. There are gates of death, there are gates of destruction, there are gates of life, there are

Πῶς γὰρ ἤρκεσεν εἰς χρόνον τοσοῦτον τὸ σῶμα ἐκεῖνο; Οὐ γάρ ἐστιν ἴσον οἰκίαν διεφθαρμένην ἀναστῆσαι, καὶ τὴν σαθρὰν καὶ παλαιὰν οὖσαν διακρατῆσαι ἐπὶ χρόνον τοσοῦτον. Εἶτα τῇ μὲν συνδούλου τέχνῃ παραχωρεῖς· τοῦ δὲ ∆εσπότου τὴν σοφίαν εὐθύνας ἀπαιτεῖς, καὶ οὐ καταδέχῃ τῇ πίστει τὸ γινόμενον; Καὶ πόσης ταῦτα ἄξια ἀνοίας; Οὐκ ἀποθανοῦμαι, ἀλλὰ ζήσομαι. Εἴ τις καὶ κατὰ ἀναγωγὴν ἐκλάβοι τὸ εἰρημένον, οὐχ ἁμαρτήσεται. Εἰ γὰρ καὶ περὶ τῆς ἀναστάσεως τοῦτο εἴρηται τὸ γὰρ, Οὐκ ἀποθανοῦμαι, δηλοῦντός ἐστιν, ὅτι οὐδὲ ὁ θάνατος θάνατος, ἀλλ' ὅμως καὶ καθ' ἕτερον τρόπον νοεῖται. Οὐκ ἀποθανοῦμαι γὰρ, φησὶ, τὸν ἕτερον θάνατον, ὃν καὶ ὁ Χριστὸς αἰνιττόμενος ἔλεγεν· Ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ, κἂν ἀποθάνῃ, ζήσεται· καὶ πᾶς ὁ ζῶν καὶ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ, οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ. Εἶδες τὴν παραδοξοποιίαν; εἶδες τὸ χρήσιμον; Οὐ γὰρ δὴ μόνον ὅτι ἀπηλλάγη εὐχαριστεῖ, ἀλλ' ὅτι καὶ ἐνέπεσε χάριν οἶδε μεγίστην, καὶ λέγει τὸ κέρδος τοῦ πειρασμοῦ. Ποῖον δὴ τοῦτο; Παιδεύων ἐπαίδευσέ με ὁ Κύριος, φησί. Τοῦτο τῶν κινδύνων τὸ χρήσιμον, ὅτι βελτίονα εἰργάσατο. Εἶδες ἑκατέρωθεν αὐτοῦ τὴν δύναμιν, καὶ τὴν κηδεμονίαν, καὶ τὸ ἀφεῖναι ἐναποληφθῆναι τοῖς δεινοῖς, καὶ τὸ πάλιν ἀπαλλάξαι; Τῷ γὰρ θανάτῳ, φησὶν, οὐ παρέδωκέ με. Ἀνοίξατέ μοι πύλας δικαιοσύνης· εἰσελθὼν ἐν αὐταῖς ἐξομολογήσομαι τῷ Κυρίῳ. Τοῖς παιδευομένοις αἱ πύλαι ἀνοίγονται, τοῖς ἀποτιθεμένοις τὰ ἁμαρτήματα. εʹ. Ὁ παιδευθεὶς μετὰ παῤῥησίας δύναται λέγειν· Ἀνοίξατέ μοι πύλας δικαιοσύνης. Καὶ γὰρ καὶ κατὰ ἀναγωγὴν ἐκληπτέον τὸ εἰρημένον, καὶ πύλας τὰς τῶν οὐρανῶν νοητέον, αἳ τοῖς πονηροῖς εἰσι κεκλεισμέναι, πρὸς ἃς δεῖ κρούειν διὰ τῆς ἀρετῆς, δι' ἐλεημοσύνης, διὰ δικαιοσύνης.
