he did not want the procession nor the theatrical preparation, having kept the crossing for the next year, just as was necessary. But immediately entering a single-oared boat, he reached the palace around lamp-lighting time. 15.7.3 On the day after, he was wholly given over to the care of the captives and strangers. Now, as many of the children as were deprived of parents, worn out by the bitter evil of orphanhood, he distributed to their relatives and to as many as he knew to be of a venerable life and to the heads of the holy monasteries, and he enjoined them to raise them not as slaves, but as free persons, deeming them worthy of all kinds of education and teaching them the holy scriptures. And some he also handed over to the orphanage which he himself had erected—having made this more of a school for those who wished—to the supervisors to be taught the general education. 15.7.4 For in the parts toward the acropolis, where also the mouth of the Pontus opens, having found a temple, very great in size, in the name of the great apostle Paul, there he built another city within the queen city. For the temple itself stands on the highest point of this city, like an acropolis. And the new city is laid out on both sides for as many stades as one might say, in both width and length. And around this stand dense dwellings, residences of the poor and, what is more philanthropic, habitations of maimed people. For it is possible to see these people, each man coming up, here the blind, there the lame, and there having some other affliction. On seeing it, you would have said it was the Stoa of Solomon, full of people who were crippled in their limbs and their whole bodies. 15.7.5 And the circle is both double and twofold. For these crippled men and women live in the upper and elevated stories, while those below and on the ground floor are carried along. And as for the size of the circle, if anyone should wish to see them, starting from early morning, he would complete the circuit by evening. Such is the city, and such are the inhabitants of this city. Having neither lands nor vineyards nor anything else of that sort, about which we find human life to be occupied, but like Job, each man or each woman inhabits the house built for them, and the things for their food and shelter were provided to them spontaneously from the imperial hand. For what is most paradoxical, the property-less, like certain masters, having possessions and all sorts of revenues, have stewards and caretakers of their life, both the emperor himself and the diligent men around the emperor. For wherever there was a piece of land situated in a good place, and if this same piece produced good revenue, bringing it, he assigned it to these brothers, from which wine flows to them like rivers, and bread and whatever people eat with bread; and those who eat are beyond number. And perhaps I dare even to say, one might say, that the work of the emperor is comparable to the miracle of my savior, I mean that of the seven thousand and five thousand. But there, thousands were satisfied from five loaves, since God was the one working the miracle; but here, the acts of philanthropy proceed from the divine command. For the rest, there it was a miracle, but here it is an imperial provision providing sufficiency for the brothers. 15.7.6 I myself saw an old woman being served by a young maiden, and a blind man being led by the hand by a seeing man, and a man without feet having feet, not his own but another's, and a man without hands being led by the hands of other men, and infants being nursed by other mothers, and paralytics being served by other able-bodied men. And in all the number of those being fed was double, some being numbered among the served, and others among those serving. It was not possible for the emperor to say to the paralytic: “Rise and walk,” nor to command the blind man to see, nor to permit the one without feet to walk. These things were of the only-begotten and who for our sake became man and for the sake of

Τῶν μὲν οὖν παίδων ὁπόσα γονέων ἐστέρηντο τῇ πικρᾷ τῆς ὀρφανίας τρυχόμενα κακότητι τοῖς τε συγγενέσι καὶ ὁπόσους σεμνοῦ βίου ᾔδει ὄντας καὶ τοῖς καθηγουμένοις τῶν ἱερῶν φροντιστηρίων διανείμας, ἐπέσκηψε μὴ ὡς δοῦλα, ἀλλ' ὡς ἐλεύθερα ἀνάγειν παντοίας παιδείας ἀξιοῦντας καὶ τὰ ἱερὰ ἐκπαιδεύοντας γράμματα. Τινὰ δὲ καὶ εἰς ὅπερ αὐτὸς ἀνήγειρεν ὀρφανοτροφεῖον, παιδευτήριον τοῦτο πλέον πεποιηκὼς τοῖς ἐθέλουσι, παρεδίδου τοῖς προϊσταμένοις τὴν ἐγκύκλιον ἐκπαι δεύεσθαι παιδείαν. 15.7.4 Ἐν γὰρ τοῖς πρὸς τὴν ἀκρό πολιν μέρεσιν, ἔνθα καὶ τὸ στόμα τοῦ πόντου ἀνοίγεται, ναὸν ἐφευρηκὼς μεγέθει μέγιστον ἐπ' ὀνόματι τοῦ μεγάλου τῶν ἀποστόλων Παύλου, ἐνταῦθα πόλιν ἑτέραν ἐν τῇ βασιλίδι πόλει ἐδείματο. Αὐτὸς μὲν γὰρ ὁ ναὸς ἐπ' ἀ κροτάτῳ τῆσδε τῆς πόλεως ἕστηκεν οἷον ἀκρόπολις. Ἡ δὲ νέα πόλις ἑκατέρωθεν γέγραπται εἰς σταδίους, ὁπόσους ἂν εἴπῃ τις, κατά τε πλάτος καὶ μῆκος. Κύκλῳ δὲ ταύτης ἑστᾶσιν οἰκήματα πυκνά, κατοικίαι πενήτων καί, τὸ δὴ φιλανθρωπότερον, ἀνθρώπων λελωβημένων ἐνδιαιτήματα. Ἔστι γὰρ ἰδεῖν τούτους κατ' ἄνδρα ἕκαστον ἐπερχόμενον, ὅπου μὲν τυφλούς, ὅπου δὲ καὶ χωλούς, ὅπου δέ τι καὶ ἄλλο κακὸν ἔχοντας. Τὴν στοὰν Σολομῶντος ἂν εἶπες ἰδὼν μεστὴν ἀνθρώπων πεπηρωμένων τὰ μέλη καὶ ὅλα τὰ σώματα. 15.7.5 Ὁ δὲ κύκλος διπλοῦς τε καὶ δίδυμος. Οἱ μὲν γὰρ ἄνω καὶ μετέωροι κατοικοῦσι τῶν πεπηρωμένων τούτων ἀνδρῶν τε καὶ γυναικῶν, οἱ δὲ κάτω καὶ πρόσγειοι παρασύ ρονται. Τὸ δὲ τοῦ κύκλου μέγεθος, εἴ τις ἐθέλει τούτους ἰδεῖν, ἀρξάμενος πρωΐθεν εἰς ἑσπέραν ἂν τὸν κύκλον συνε τέλεσε. Τοιαύτη μὲν ἡ πόλις, τοιοῦτοι δὲ καὶ οἱ τῆς πόλεως ταύτης οἰκήτορες. Οὔτε γήπεδα ἔχοντες οὔτε ἀμπελῶνας οὔτε τι ἄλλο τοιοῦτον, περὶ ὃ τὸν ἀνθρώπινον βίον ἠσχολῆσθαι καταλαμβάνομεν, ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸν Ἰὼβ ἕκαστος ἢ ἑκάστη τὴν μὲν δημιουργηθεῖσαν αὐτοῖς οἰκίαν οἰκεῖ, αὐτόματα δὲ τὰ πρὸς τροφήν τε καὶ σκέπην παρὰ τῆς βασιλικῆς χειρὸς αὐτοῖς ἐπορίζετο. Καὶ γὰρ τὸ παρα δοξότατον, οἱ ἀκτήμονες ὥσπερ τινὲς δεσπόται κτήματα ἔχοντες καὶ προσόδους παντοδαπὰς φροντιστὰς ἔχουσι καὶ τοῦ βίου αὐτῶν ἐπιμελητὰς αὐτόν τε τὸν αὐτοκράτορα καὶ τοὺς ἀμφὶ τὸν αὐτοκράτορα σπουδεργούς. Ὅπου γὰρ δήποτε γῆς κτῆμα ἦν ἐν καλῷ κείμενον, ταὐτὸν δὲ εἴπερ ἦν εὐπρόσοδον, τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς τούτοις φέρων ἐνείματο, ἀφ' ὧν οἶνός τε αὐτοῖς κατὰ ποταμοὺς ἐπιρρεῖ καὶ ἄρτος καὶ ὅσα ἐπὶ τοῖς ἄρτοις σιτοῦνται ἄνθρωποι· οἱ δὲ ἐσθίοντες ὑπὲρ ἀριθμόν. Καὶ τάχα τολμῶ καὶ λέγω, εἴποι τις ἄν, πρὸς τὸ τοῦ ἐμοῦ σωτῆρος θαῦμα, τὸ τῶν ἑπτακισχιλίων φημὶ καὶ πεντακισχιλίων, ἀναφέρεσθαι τὸ τοῦ αὐτοκράτο ρος ἔργον. Ἀλλ' ἐκεῖσε ἐκ πέντε ἄρτων ἐκορέσθησαν χιλιάδες, καθὸ καὶ ὁ Θεὸς ὁ θαυματουργῶν· ἐνταῦθα δὲ τὰ μὲν τῆς φιλανθρωπίας τῆς θείας ἐξέχεται ἐντολῆς. Τὸ δ' ἄλλο, ἐκεῖσε μὲν θαῦμα, ὧδε δὲ χορηγία βασιλικὴ τὸ αὔταρκες τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς πορίζουσα. 15.7.6 Εἶδον ἐγὼ καὶ γραῦν γυναῖκα ὑπὸ νεάνιδος ὑπηρετουμένην καὶ ἄνδρα τυφλὸν ὑπὸ βλέποντος ἀνθρώπου χειραγωγούμενον καὶ ἄποδα πόδας ἔχοντα οὐ τοὺς ἑαυτοῦ ἀλλὰ τοὺς ἀλλοτρίους καὶ ἄχειρα ὑπ' ἀνδρῶν ἑτέρων χειραγωγούμενον καὶ βρέφη τιθηνούμενα παρ' ἀλλοτρίων μητέρων καὶ παραλύτους ὑπ' ἄλλων ἀνθρώπων δουλευομένους εὐρώστων. Καὶ ὅλως διπλοῦν ἦν τὸ πλῆθος τῶν τρεφομένων, τῶν μὲν εἰς δου λευομένους ἀριθμουμένων, τῶν δὲ εἰς δουλεύοντας. Τῷ μὲν αὐτοκράτορι οὐκ ἐξῆν τῷ παραλύτῳ εἰπεῖν· «Ἔγειρε καὶ περιπάτει», οὐδὲ τῷ τυφλῷ κελεῦσαι τὸ βλέπειν οὐδὲ τῷ μὴ ἔχοντι πόδας ἐπιτρέπειν περιπατεῖν. Ταῦτα ἦν τοῦ μονογενοῦς καὶ δι' ἡμᾶς γεγονότος ἀνθρώπου καὶ ὑπὲρ
