The Apostle. Therefore he also committed himself to the help of the Spirit, interceding for his people and the Church, lest, being warred against for long periods in times of persecution, it might suffer great harm. Therefore he says: "You are my helper and my deliverer, O Lord, do not delay." But if these things also refer to the time of our Savior's passion, you yourself will understand. For he described in the preceding [psalm] the rebellions against him; and how the waters entered unto his soul, and he was stuck in the mire of the deep, and how he came into the depths of the sea; and those who hated me without cause were multiplied more than the hairs of his head; and he suffered as much as has been said; he fittingly sends up the present prayer to the Father, saying: "O God, attend to my help; O Lord, make haste to help me," and the things that follow these. Since he saw the order of his apostles in great confusion because of their love for him, he uttered the second set of words on their behalf, so that, receiving his resurrection which they were waiting and longing to see, they might be filled with exultation and gladness, saying always: "Let God be magnified," being themselves those who love his salvation. 70. "In you, O Lord, I have hoped, let me never be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me, and rescue me." The 30th psalm also contains things equivalent to these, beginning itself in this manner. "In you, O Lord, I have hoped, let me never be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me. Incline your ear to me." But that one was inscribed, "To the end," and "A Psalm of David;" whereas the present one happens to be without an inscription. And that one contained confession with supplication, but this one seems to be a prophecy brought forth from the person of the Savior. For this reason it is not inscribed in the usual way, "of David." But one might say it is fitting to include it with those 23.773 placed before it, because it preserves a great consistency with them; for in the one before this it was said: "O God, attend to my help. Let them be ashamed and confounded who seek my soul. Let them be turned back and put to shame who desire evil for me;" and in the [psalm] at hand the text proceeds using the same words, saying: "O God, attend to my help, let them be ashamed;" and the rest follows the same thought, with the text being expanded in what is set forth, which one might say not inappropriately fits the Father; Both because it is said in it: "For you are my patience, O Lord; Lord, my hope from my youth;" for these same things were also said in the 21st psalm from his person in these words: "For you are he who took me out of the womb;" and so forth. But also what is said next in the prophecy at hand, in the part, "My God, do not forsake me, until I declare your arm to every generation to come," seems to be equivalent to the text in the 21st psalm that says: "A generation to come shall be declared to the Lord." For attend carefully how in that one it was said, "A generation to come shall be declared to the Lord," but in the present one, "Until I declare your arm to every generation to come." But the prophecy at hand also clearly presents his resurrection from the dead, saying from his person: "O God, who is like you? How many great and evil tribulations have you shown me, and turning you have brought me to life, and from the straits of the earth you have brought me up again?" Therefore, whether from the person of the Savior, or from the person of any just man, what is set forth should be heard. For it contains teaching that instructs us, with a sound disposition, to put all things second, and to hang our hopes on the Lord alone, so as to say to him with a genuine disposition. "In you, O Lord, I have hoped, let me never be put to shame." For those who trust in wealth and great abundance of life, or in worldly dignities, or in
