gates narrow and afflicted. For this reason, since there are many, he states the distinguishing mark of the Lord's gate, adding: This is the gate of the Lord. For those are not of the Lord. And what is its distinguishing mark? That through it the disciplined enter, those who are afflicted. For it is narrow and afflicted; and if it is afflicted, those who are afflicted will walk through it; just as the one to destruction is wide and spacious. I will give thanks to you, for you have heard me, and have become my salvation. He did not simply say, You have heard, but after first disciplining, and making better. Therefore he also gives thanks, not for what he was heard, but for what he was disciplined. For because of this he was heard, and everywhere this form of thanksgiving is very much with him. For what I have said, and will not cease saying, this is especially a sacrifice and an offering. The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the head of the corner. That what was said refers to Christ is surely clear to everyone. For he himself in the Gospels brings forward this prophecy, saying: Have you never read, The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the head of the corner? And if what was said does not seem to be dependent on the narrative itself, but the prophecy, interrupting the sequence in the middle, has been inserted, it is nothing wonderful, nor new; for thus most of the prophecies were proclaimed in the Old Testament, because it was necessary for them to be veiled for a time, so that the books themselves would not be destroyed. Since also the prophecy about his birth seems to be dependent on the narrative, but has nothing in common with it; such as, Behold, the virgin shall conceive in the womb, and shall bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which is translated, God with us. The stone which the builders rejected. He calls the Jews the builders, the teachers of the law, the scribes, the Pharisees, because they rejected him, saying: You are a Samaritan, and have a demon; and again: This man is not from God, but deceives the crowd. But nevertheless this rejected one appeared so approved as to become the head of the corner. For not every stone is suitable for a corner, but the most approved one, and the one able to bind the walls from either 55.336 side. What therefore the Prophet says is this, that the one rejected by the Jews and despised appeared so wonderful as not only to construct a building, but also to bind two walls together. What walls indeed? Those who believe from among the Jews and the Greeks; just as Paul also says: For he is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of the fence, the enmity in his flesh, abolishing the law of commandments in ordinances, that he might create the two into one new man. And again: Built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ being the cornerstone. But what was said is a great accusation against the Jews, that as builders they did not judge the suitable stone, but even cast it away as unapproved, one able to construct such a building. And if you wish to learn of the two walls, hear Christ himself also saying: And I have other sheep, which are not of this fold, and them also I must bring; and there shall be one flock, one shepherd. This also happened from of old as in a type. For Abraham became patriarch of both, those in uncircumcision and those in circumcision; but that was as in a type, while this is in truth. This has become the head of the corner; that is, it bound both nations together. This has been done by the Lord. What is: This has been done by the Lord? It was not a human deed, he says, what happened, it was not of one of the many, it was not of angels, it was not of archangels to fashion such a corner. For no one had the strength, not a righteous man, not a prophet, not an angel, not an archangel, but it was God's achievement alone; for this is especially his work. But another interpreter: This has been done by the Lord, he says;

Καὶ πάλιν· Ἐποικοδομηθέντες τῷ θεμελίῳ τῶν ἀποστόλων καὶ προφητῶν, ὄντος ἀκρογωνιαίου λίθου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ. Τὸ δὲ εἰρημένον πολλὴ κατηγορία τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ὅτι οἰκοδομοῦντες τὸν ἐπιτήδειον λίθον οὐκ ἔκριναν, ἀλλὰ καὶ ὡς ἀδόκιμον ἔῤῥιψαν, τοιαύτην δυνάμενον οἰκοδομὴν ὑφῆναι. Εἰ δὲ βούλει τοὺς δύο τοίχους μαθεῖν, ἄκουσον καὶ αὐτοῦ τοῦ Χριστοῦ λέγοντος· Καὶ ἄλλα πρόβατα ἔχω, ἃ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τῆς αὐλῆς ταύτης, κἀκεῖνά με δεῖ ἀγαγεῖν· καὶ γενήσεται μία ποίμνη, εἷς ποιμήν. Τοῦτο καὶ ἄνωθεν ὡς ἐν τύπῳ γέγονεν. Ὁ γὰρ Ἀβραὰμγέγονεν ἑκατέρων πατριάρχης, τῶν τε ἐν ἀκροβυστίᾳ, τῶν τε ἐν περιτομῇ· ἀλλ' ἐκεῖνο μὲν ὡς ἐν τύπῳ, τοῦτο δὲ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ. Οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας· τουτέστι, συνέδησεν ἑκάτερα τὰ ἔθνη. Παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη. Τί ἐστι· Παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη; Οὐκ ἦν ἀνθρώπινον, φησὶ, τὸ γενόμενον, οὐκ ἦν ἑνὸς τῶν πολλῶν, οὐκ ἦν ἀγγέλων, οὐκ ἦν ἀρχαγγέλων τὸ τοιαύτην πλέξαι γωνίαν.
