the emperor's cousin and sebastocrator was also collaborating. 15.8.5 And he vomited forth the doctrines of the heresy. And what was the manner of it? For a curtain in between walled off the women's quarters, and the emperors with this abominable man, as he belched forth and openly spoke all that he had in his soul; and a secretary wrote down what was said from behind the curtain. And that foolish man became a teacher in appearance, while the emperor feigned being a student, and the under-secretary wrote down the teachings. And that God-stricken man strung together all things, both speakable and unspeakable, and he spared no God-hated doctrine, but he also disregarded our theology and misrepresented the whole economy of salvation and the temples, alas, the holy temples he named as those of demons, and the body and blood of the first and high priest and victim, which is celebrated among us, he considered and reckoned as worthless. 15.8.6 But what came next? The emperor casts aside the curtain and reveals this; and the entire senatorial order was assembled and the military contingent was gathered and the synod of the church was present. And at that time, the most blessed among patriarchs, the grammarian, the lord Nicholas, was presiding over the throne of the queen of cities. And the God-hated doctrines were read out and the refutation was incontrovertible. And not even the one of the opposing faction was in denial, but immediately and with bared head he proceeded to counter-arguments and promised to array himself against fire and scourges and countless deaths. For these deluded Bogomils have believed they can endure every punishment without pain, with angels supposedly snatching them from the very fire. And while many of all of them were reproaching his impiety, and as many as had shared with him in his perdition, Basil was the same, unbending, a most noble Bogomil; although threatened with a pyre and other torments, he clung fast to the demon and embraced his Satanael. And having been put under guard and often sent for by the emperor and often exhorted to renounce his impiety, he was likewise unmoved by the emperor's entreaties. 15.8.7 But let us not pass over the marvel that happened concerning him. For before the emperor looked upon him more sternly, after the denunciation of his impiety, he went for the time being into a small house situated somewhere near the royal dwellings, just then first constructed for him. And it was evening and the stars above were glittering as the weather was clear and the moon after its conjunction was giving its light that evening. And when the monk entered his cell around midnight, stones were spontaneously thrown like hail against the cell, with no hand throwing the stones nor any person stoning this demonic abba. And it was a sign, as it seems, of the enraged demons around Satanael, taking it ill that he had divulged matters to the emperor and brought a conspicuous persecution against their error. And these most frightful things a certain man called Paraskeviotes, who had been appointed to be a guard of that demonic old man, so that he would not have the liberty to converse with anyone and to impart his corruption, swore he [both to see and] heard the clatter of the thrown stones both on the ground and on the roof-tiles, and saw the stones continuous and in succession, but nowhere saw anyone throwing them. For a sudden earthquake also accompanied the volley of stones and the ground was shaken and the things around the roof were rattling. Paraskeviotes, however, before he suspected the work to be demonic, was brave, as he himself said; but seeing that the stones were raining down from above, so to speak, and that that little old heresiarch had gone inside and was shut in, attributing the deed to demons, he did not know what was to be done.

Καὶ ὁ μὲν λῆρος ἐκεῖνος διδάσκαλος τῷ δοκεῖν ἐγίνετο, ἐσχηματίζετο δὲ τὴν μαθητείαν ὁ βασιλεύς, ἀπεγράφετο δὲ τὰ τῆς διδασ καλίας ὁ ὑπογραμματεύς. Πάντα δὲ ῥητά τε καὶ ἄρρητα ἐπισυνεῖρεν ὁ θεοπληγὴς ἐκεῖνος ἀνήρ, καὶ οὐδενὸς ἐφεί σατο θεομισοῦς δόγματος, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὴν θεολογίαν ἡμῶν παρεβλέψατο καὶ τὴν οἰκονομίαν πᾶσαν ἐφάντασε καὶ τοὺς ναούς, οἴμοι, τοὺς ἱεροὺς ναοὺς δαιμόνων ὠνόμακε, καὶ τὸ τελούμενον παρ' ἡμῖν σῶμα καὶ αἷμα τοῦ πρώτου καὶ ἀρχιε ρέως καὶ θύματος παρὰ φαῦλον ἔθετο καὶ ἐλογίσατο. 15.8.6 Ἀλλὰ τί τὸ ἐντεῦθεν; Ἀπορρίπτει τὴν σκηνὴν ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ ἀναπετάννυσι τοῦτο· καὶ τὸ συγκλητικὸν ἅπαν συνή θροιστο καὶ τὸ στρατιωτικὸν συνείλεκτο σύνταγμα καὶ ἡ γερουσία τῆς ἐκκλησίας συνῆν. Προὐκάθητο δ' ἄρα τὸ τηνικαῦτα τοῦ τῆς βασιλίδος πόλεως θρόνου ὁ ἐν πατριάρ χαις μακαριώτατος ὁ γραμματικὸς ὁ κύριος Νικόλαος. Καὶ ἀνεγινώσκετο τὰ θεοστυγῆ δόγματα καὶ ὁ ἔλεγχος ἀδιάβλη τος. Καὶ οὐδὲ ὁ τῆς ἐναντίας μοίρας ἔξαρνος ἦν, ἀλλ' αὐτίκα καὶ γυμνῇ τῇ κεφαλῇ πρὸς ἐναντιολογίας ἐχώρει καὶ πρὸς πῦρ καὶ μάστιγας καὶ μυρίους θανάτους ἀντιπα ρατάξασθαι ὑπισχνεῖτο. Πεπιστεύκασι γὰρ οἱ πλανώμενοι οὗτοι Βογόμιλοι πᾶσαν ἀπόνως ὑπενεγκεῖν τιμωρίαν, ἀγγέ λων δῆθεν ἐξαρπαζόντων αὐτῆς τῆς πυρκαϊᾶς. Πολλῶν δὲ πάντων αὐτῶν καὶ τὴν ἀσέβειαν ὀνειδιζόντων, καὶ ὅσοι τῆς αὐτοῦ ἀπωλείας αὐτῷ κεκοινωνήκασιν, ὁ αὐτὸς ἦν Βασίλειος, ἀμετακλινής, Βογόμιλος γενναιότατος· καίτοι πυρκαϊᾶς ἀπειλουμένης καὶ ἄλλων κακώσεων ἀπρὶξ τοῦ δαίμονος εἴχετο καὶ τὸν αὐτοῦ Σαταναὴλ ἠγκαλίζετο. Ἔμφρουρος δὲ γενόμενος καὶ πολλάκις πρὸς τοῦ βασιλέως πεμπόμενος καὶ πολλάκις παρακαλούμενος τὴν ἀσέβειαν ἐξομόσασθαι ὡσαύτως εἶχε πρὸς τὰς τοῦ βασιλέως παρα κλήσεις. 15.8.7 Ἀλλὰ τὸ περὶ τοῦτον γεγονὸς τέρας μὴ παραδράμωμεν. Πρὶν ἢ γὰρ τούτῳ ἐπιβλέψαι τὸν βασιλέα δριμύτερον, μετὰ τὴν τῆς ἀσεβείας ἐξαγόρευσιν, ἀπῄει μὲν τῷ τέως εἰς οἰκίσκον τινὰ κείμενον ἀγχοῦ που τῶν βασιλι κῶν οἰκημάτων ἄρτι πρώτως δι' αὐτὸν κατασκευασθέντα. Ἑσπέρα δ' ἦν καὶ οἱ ἀστέρες οἱ ἄνω αἰθρίας οὔσης ἀπή στραπτον καὶ ἡ σελήνη μετὰ τὴν σύνοδον τὴν ἑσπέραν ἐκείνων ἐπύρσευε. Τοῦ δὲ μοναχοῦ τὴν κέλλαν εἰσδύντος περὶ μέσας νύκτας, αὐτομάτως λίθοι χαλαζηδὸν κατὰ τῆς κέλλης ἐβάλλοντο, χειρὸς μὲν μηδεμιᾶς ῥιπτούσης τοὺς λίθους μηδέ τινος καταλιθοῦντος ἀνθρώπου τὸν δαιμονιώδη τοῦτον ἀββᾶν. Μήνιμα δ' ἦν, ὡς ἔοικε, τῶν ἀμφὶ τὸν Σαταναὴλ δαιμόνων ἐξωργισμένων, ἐν δεινῷ ποιουμένων ὅτι δὴ τὰ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα ἐξωρχήσατο καὶ διωγμὸν κατὰ τῆς πλάνης λαμπρὸν ἐπήγαγε. Καὶ ταῦτα μὲν Παρασκευιώ της <τις> καλούμενος ἀφορισθεὶς φύλαξ εἶναι τοῦ δαιμονιώ δους ἐκείνου γέροντος, ὡς μὴ ἄδειαν ἔχειν προσομιλεῖν τισι καὶ τῆς αὐτοῦ λύμης μεταδιδόναι, τὰ φρικωδέστατα ἐπώμνυτο [ἰδεῖν τε καὶ] ἀκοῦσαι μὲν τοὺς τῶν βαλλομένων λίθων καὶ κατὰ γῆς καὶ κατὰ κεράμων κρότους, ἰδεῖν δὲ συνεχεῖς καὶ ἀλλεπαλλήλους τοὺς λίθους, μηδένα δὲ μηδα μοῦ τὸν βάλλοντα τούτους θεάσασθαι. Συνεπελάμβανε γὰρ τῇ τῶν λίθων φορᾷ καὶ σεισμός τις ἀθρόος καὶ τὸ ἐπίπεδον ἐκεκλόνητο καὶ τὰ περὶ τὸν ὄροφον ἐτετρύγεσαν. Ὁ μέντοι Παρασκευιώτης, πρὶν μὲν ὑπονοῆσαι τὸ ἔργον δαιμόνιον, ἐθάρρει, ὡς ἐκεῖνος ἔφασκεν, ὁρῶν δὲ ὅτι οἱ μὲν λίθοι ἄνω θεν, οἷον εἰπεῖν, ἐξωμβρίζοντο καὶ τὸ γερόντιον ἐκεῖνο τὸ αἱρεσιαρχικὸν ἐνεδεδύκει τε καὶ ἐναποκέκλειστο, εἰς δαί μονας τὸ ἔργον ἀνενεγκὼν οὐκ εἶχεν ὅ τι καὶ γένοιτο.
