handed down. For he did not abolish the first things by introducing the second, but he made an addition; and this is to be found in his teachings, through which he says: “It was said to the ancients, You shall not kill; but I say, do not even be angry. It was said to the ancients, You shall not commit adultery; but I say, do not even lust;” and all other such things having an addition have been handed down in his Church through the spiritual contemplation and interpretation of the law. But also “My mouth,” he says, “will declare your righteousness.” For the Gospel reveals the righteousness of God, not set apart for the Jews alone as was the law through Moses. Wherefore the Apostle says: “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel. For it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed.” Therefore it is said here, “My mouth will declare your righteousness, all the day your salvation;” or according to Symmachus, “every day your salvation.” And this is to be seen fulfilled throughout the whole world, in which the mouth of our Savior through the divine Scriptures preaches on each day to all people the salvation for all procured through him. And he adds to these, “Because I have not known letters.” Having taken the keys of the kingdom, and neither entering themselves 23.784 nor allowing others, they possessed the letters. But I, he says, not paying attention to the writing of Moses, nor handing down the carnal letters of the law to my disciples, have not known letters. But what have you known? He clarifies next, saying: “I will enter into the mighty deeds of the Lord, Lord, and I will remember your righteousness alone.” For the letters were fitting for the Jews alone, commanding them to go up to Jerusalem three times a year, and they contained many other difficult and unnecessary things. But I, in the mighty deed of the Lord, Lord, will enter into my own Churches, and I will remember your righteousness alone. For it was the righteousness of the Father that all people, Greeks along with barbarians, should be deemed worthy of his knowledge, and to permit worship of him in every place, and no longer in one; so that from the rising of the sun to its setting his name would be glorified among the nations. “O God, you have taught me from my youth, and until now I will declare your wondrous works.” The Savior alone acknowledges the Father as teacher; wherefore those in his own country said: “Where did this man get all this wisdom and these mighty works? Is this not the carpenter’s son?” For they knew precisely that he had not attended human teachers. Since, therefore, having taken the form of a servant, and having been found in appearance as a man, he passed through the age of childhood, and he endured the season of youth likewise as we do; and he neither attended schools, nor teachers during this time, but by divine power he advanced in age and wisdom, and in favor with God and men; rightly he says here: “O God, you have taught me from my youth, and until now I will declare your wondrous works;” and may it be kept for my disciples until the end of the age; and as one might say, until old age and to the uttermost perfection, I beseech you again, O God, not to forsake me, but to be with me and to work your wondrous works through me, “until I declare your arm to every generation to come.” For the present generation, he says, is crooked and perverse, and an evil and adulterous generation. Therefore to the generation to come I will declare “your power and your righteousness, O God, up to the highest heavens, the great things which you have done.” You yourself, the Father, through me will declare these things to all people who will be born hereafter and to the generation to come, and your righteousness will be preached up to the highest heavens. For when those on earth are saved, there will be joy in heaven, as the angels who dwell in the highest heavens rejoice with the
