of all. Then seeing the inescapability of the matter, as many of them as were orthodox, approached the furnace of the cross as if truly about to bear witness; but the most godless ones, clinging to the abominable heresy, inclined to the other side. 15.9.5 And just as they were about to be thrown together into the furnaces, all the bystanders were grieving for the Christians, as they were now to be burned, and were very gloomy about the emperor, being ignorant of what was being arranged. But a certain royal command, reaching those executioners beforehand, prevented them from the undertaking. And so the emperor, having truly secured a firm grasp of the Bogomils, after much exhortation, released the falsely accused Christians, but again held those men in prison [having divided them], having separated the apostles of the impious Basil from the others. Then each day sending for them, some he taught himself, exhorting them at length to abstain from the abominable religion, and to the others he dispatched certain dignitaries of the holy order of the church, instructing them to visit them each day to teach them the orthodox faith and to exhort them to abstain from the Bogomil heresy. And some of them changed for the better and were released from custody, but others died for their own heresy while held in prison, though having a plentiful supply of food and clothing.

15.10.1 But Basil, as truly a heresiarch and completely unrepentant, all of the holy synod and the dignitaries of the Nazirites and even the patriarch at that time, Nicholas, judged worthy of the fire. With whom the emperor also concurred, having spoken with him many times and discerning him to be a perverse man and not abandoning the heresy, wherefore he lit a very great fire in the hippodrome. And a very great pit was dug and a multitude of logs, all lofty trees and piled together, the construction showed a mountain. Then when the pyre was lit, slowly a great crowd streamed together both on the floor of the hippodrome and on the steps, all awaiting what would happen. On the other side a cross was set up and a choice was given to the impious one, if perhaps, being terrified of the fire and changing his mind, he might go to the cross, <so that> he might then be free from the furnace. 15.10.2 And the multitude of heretics was also present, watching their leader Basil. But he appeared contemptuous of all punishment and threat, and while he was further from the fire, he laughed and uttered strange things, saying that certain angels would snatch him from the midst of the fire, and he chanted that verse of David, "But it shall not come near you; you will only look with your eyes." But when the crowd, standing aside, gave him a clear view of that dreadful sight of the fire (for he felt the fire from a great distance and saw the rising flame, roaring as it were, and sending off sparks of fire raised high up from the stone pyramid standing in the middle of the hippodrome), then that bold man seemed to shrink from the fire and to be disturbed. For he turned his gaze many times and wrung his hands and struck his thigh, as if completely at a loss. 15.10.3 Nevertheless, even in this state and from the mere sight, he was as if of adamant. For neither did the fire soften his iron soul, nor did the emperor's messages sent to him charm him, but whether the greatest despair seized him on account of the present necessity and misfortune, and so he was at a loss in his judgment and took no distinction of what was advantageous, or whether the devil possessing his soul, which seems more likely, had scattered the deepest darkness over him, that abominable Basil stood helpless before every threat and every fear, and now he was gaping at the fire, now at the
