He says: "I will declare your name to my brothers; in the midst of the church I will sing praise to you." 10.8.95 Therefore, he promises first to his disciples and apostles to announce the good news of the joy and exultation concerning him, calling them brothers; 10.8.96 In accord with these things Matthew also teaches, saying: "And behold, Jesus met them"—that is, those with Mary Magdalene—"saying, 'Rejoice.' And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, 'Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.'" 10.8.97 And John, after the resurrection from the dead, also introduces Jesus saying to Mary: "Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" 10.8.98 Therefore, first to his apostles, whom he calls his own brothers, he says he will declare the name of the Father; and after them, in order and sequence, he promises to teach the paternal hymn to the church established in his name throughout the whole world. 10.8.99 For just as if some teacher, excelling in wisdom, were to deliver discourses in the midst of students so that they too, having heard, might obey, in the same way he also says, "in the midst of the church I will sing praise to you," so that the church, having learned and heard from him the proper way, might no longer, as before, praise the demons, but only him who is God of all, through the one who proclaimed him. 10.8.100 Having promised to do these things, very consistently he from this point on commands the church and his brothers to praise the Father. Wherefore he says: "You who fear the Lord, praise him; all you offspring of Jacob, glorify him," 10.8.101 and "let all the offspring of Israel fear him. For he has not despised nor abhorred the supplication of the poor, neither has he turned away his face from me, but when I cried to him, he heard me," through which words he has clearly shown the deliverance from the aforementioned evils. 10.8.102 For if "when he cried to him, he heard" him, and he prayed to be delivered, his "soul" "from the sword," and his "only-begotten" "from the dog," and also "from the lion's mouth and from the horns of unicorns his humiliation," it is consistent to understand that he who said that God did not "abhor his supplication," nor "turn his face" from him, but "when he cried" "heard" him, found deliverance from these things. 10.8.103 Wherefore it was also granted to him, having been delivered from so many things and having escaped from death, to spend time with his disciples and "brothers," and to praise the Father "in the midst of the church." But observe again how he calls himself "poor" once more, in accordance with the prophecies previously cited, through which he was named needy and poor. 10.8.104 But since through these things he has also shown his resurrection, again turning his discourse to the Father, he says, "From you is my praise in the great church," mentioning the church established in his name from the nations throughout the whole world, in which the praise concerning our Savior is sung for all time by the will and cooperation of his Father. 10.8.105 Wherefore he says: "From you is my praise in the great church." For truly great is this church, composed of every race of men, and not worthy to be compared, because of the solemnity and excellence of its life and because of the greatness of its doctrines, with the nation of the Jews and the synagogue of the circumcision, which is diminished by every poverty of reason and life and understanding and of the other glory concerning God. 10.8.106 Then he adds: "My vows I will pay" to the Lord "before all who fear him," calling "those who fear him" the previously named great church, to whom he was saying: "You who
