For if we judged ourselves, we should not be judged. Thus did Job purify his children. For he who offered sacrifices for their hidden sins, much more did he call them to account for their manifest ones. But we do not do so, but all the contrary. For as soon as we have reclined, we turn over all our worldly affairs; and some bring in unclean thoughts, others loans and contracts and deadly cares. And having a virgin daughter, we guard her strictly 57.456 but that which is more precious to us than a daughter, the soul, this we allow to be prostituted and defiled, introducing countless wicked thoughts; whether the love of covetousness, or of luxury, or of beautiful bodies, or of anger. and should any other whatever wish to enter, opening the doors we draw it in and invite it, and with license we allow it to mingle with her. What could be more barbarous than this, to overlook our soul, which is more precious to us than all things, being outraged by so many adulterers, and consorting with them until they are satiated? Which will never be. Therefore when sleep overtakes us, only then do they depart; or rather, not even then; for even our dreams and fancies bring the same images to her. Whence also, when day has come, the soul that imagines such things has often fallen into the very act of those imaginings. But you do not allow even a small speck of dust to enter the pupil of your eye, yet you overlook your soul being dragged down by the refuse of so many evils? When then shall we be able to empty out this dung, if every day we lay it up? when to cut out the thorns? when to cast the seed? Do you not know that the time of harvest is now at hand? But we have not yet even broken up the fallow ground. If then the husbandman should come and accuse us, what shall we say? and what shall we answer? That no one gave us the seed? And yet this is cast down every day. But that no one cut out the thorns? And yet every day we sharpen the sickle. But the necessities of life distract us? And why did you not crucify yourself to the world? For if he who only returns what was given is wicked, because he did not double it; he who has corrupted even this, what shall he hear? If he was bound and carried out where there is gnashing of teeth, what shall we suffer, who, when ten thousand things draw us to virtue, shrink back and are reluctant? For what is not sufficient to exhort you? Do you not see the worthlessness of this life? the uncertainty of life? the toil in present things? the sweat? For is it possible to pursue virtue with toil, but vice without toil? If then there is toil both here and there, why did you not choose that which has much profit? Rather, there are some parts of virtue which do not even have toil. For what toil is it not to speak evil, not to lie, not to swear, to put away anger against one's neighbor? On the contrary, to do these things is toilsome, and brings much care. What defense then will there be for us, what excuse, if we do not even accomplish these things? For from these things it is clear that even the more toilsome things escape us from sloth and reluctance. Considering all these things, let us flee from wickedness, let us choose virtue; that we may attain to the good things both present and to come, by the grace and love for mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. 57.455 HOMILY 43. Then certain of the Scribes and of the Pharisees answered him, saying, “Master, we would see a sign from you.” But he answered and said, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah.” 1. Could anything be more senseless than these men, not to say more impious? who after so many signs, as though none 57.456 had been done, say, We would see a sign from you. For what cause then did they say this? That they might take hold of him again. Ἂν οὖν παραγένηται ὁ γεωργὸς καὶ ἐγκαλῇ, τί ἐροῦμεν; τί δὲ ἀποκρινούμεθα; Ὅτι τὰ σπέρματα οὐδεὶς ἔδωκε; Καὶ μὴν καθ' ἑκάστην καταβάλλεται ταῦτα τὴν ἡμέραν. Ποῖος γὰρ πόνος τὸ μὴ κακηγορεῖν, μηδὲ ψεύδεσθαι, τὸ μὴ ὀμνύναι, τὸ τὴν ὀργὴν ἀφιέναι τῷ πλησίον; Τοὐναντίον μὲν οὖν τὸ ταῦτα ποιεῖν ἐπίπονον, καὶ πολλὴν φέρει τὴν φροντίδα. Τίς οὖν ἡμῖν ἔσται ἀπολογία, ποία συγγνώμη, μηδὲ ταῦτα κατορθοῦσιν; Ἀπὸ γὰρ τούτων δῆλον, ὅτι καὶ τὰ ἐπιπονώτερα ἀπὸ ῥᾳθυμίας ἡμᾶς διαφεύγει καὶ ὄκνου. Ἅπερ ἅπαντα ἐννοήσαντες, φύγωμεν κακίαν, ἑλώμεθα ἀρετήν· ἵνα καὶ τῶν παρόντων καὶ τῶν μελλόντων ἐπιτύχωμεν ἀγαθῶν, χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ᾧ ἡ δόξα καὶ τὸ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
