a fattened calf and, rejoicing, he will summon the powers above at your discovery. Do not then disobey, my son, my son, but be recalled, but return, joined to your good brother Dionysius, before the sword of eternal death overtakes you. 448 {1To Eustratios the Abbot}1 I rejoiced upon receiving your precious letter, dearest of fathers, and learning that things concerning your holiness are thus and so, since, from what the messengers reported, although they are trustworthy, I was grievously disposed, having heard of the hypocritical subscription. And accept me, most honored one, speaking rather boldly. It is not without cause that, having been seized by the imperial power, you remained unharmed, that is, released; for this is an enticement of the things that are much talked about. Therefore, no one of those who have spoken boldly has been acknowledged to have remained without imprisonment or at least exile, that is, banishment. But those outside of these things are inside the category of apostasy, lest by speaking more harshly I cause grief. Or did you not see clearly, most discerning one, the harsh persecution of Leo, the beast-named? Whose Ahab-like hand seized even those from another state, and killed and destroyed them, or more humanely imprisoned them after a bitter scourging, not to mention those under his hand. But if you yourself suffered none of these things after your arrest, forgive me, you were robbed, holy one. And do not tell me that your own churches are being preserved and the holy images remain safe and the commemoration of our most holy patriarch; for others who have been led away also make this fine speech. These things cannot be preserved unless there has been a betrayal of true resistance. What is the profit, if we, who are and are called the temple of God, have become useless and have preserved lifeless houses? The icon of Christ or of the Theotokos or of any saint does not fall away; for it remains in them as in the archetypes, but those fall who think to destroy them, but also those who, out of regard for these things, betray their boldness and the suffering that comes through it. Woe, some are dying, others are being exiled, others are being scourged, others are being imprisoned, the mountains and the deserts, rocks and caves holding those blessedly persecuted, and we are remaining at home, and thinking to remain unharmed? By no means. Let all the worldly matter of appearances perish, let the confessed harm of the soul be preferred, which every excuse-maker has suffered. I have said these things out of love and as a reminder, and that we are worthy to come under penance and that in a time of orthodoxy nothing should be left unexamined. And it is good to walk in humility and to heal what is weakened than through claims of innocence to inflict greater charges upon ourselves. 449 {1To Laurentius, my child}1 It has become audible to us, child Laurentius, the drama which was accomplished by the evil demon in the market town of Antisarchos; and we groaned greatly over it both according to the common law of human love and because the one who was hanged is of the blood of brother Athanasius the protopresbyter (by whom I was also moved to write). Oh, what a fearful tragedy! A man held in honor, more distinguished than the natives there, self-sufficient in his life, a sensible man, persevering in prayers and supplications and distinguished in the rest of his life's conduct, with no circumstantial event having occurred, from which it is often possible to be turned aside from what is proper in some small way, that in such tranquility of affairs he should work so great an evil, using a noose. Oh, I will say it again, what abhorrent news! Such are the machinations of the devil; he was a murderer from the beginning, as the Lord said, he first persuaded Ahithophel, then Judas, to hang himself; who does not cease even to this day to accomplish the same thing in those who are persuaded by him. I think he despoils man in two ways, as we have learned by experience: either from an inconsolable grief of heart or from an irrational desire, having darkened and overthrown him; for just as in the case of murder or adultery and similar debaucheries he shows darkness as light and what is bitter as sweet (for he would not, unless he thus re-elements our way of thinking, find us
