But He does not stop here, but also adds another example, saying that the queen of the South shall be raised up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn them: for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, a greater than Solomon is here. This was more than the former. For Jonah went to them; but the queen of the South did not wait for Solomon to come to her, but she herself came to him, being a woman and a barbarian, and so far away, with no threat impending, not fearing death, but only from a love of wise words. But behold, even a greater than Solomon is here. For there the woman came, but here I have come. And she rose up from the ends of the earth, but I go about cities and villages. And he discoursed about trees and woods, things that could not greatly profit her who came; but I, about secret matters and most awesome mysteries. Since therefore He condemned them, showing that they sinned inexcusably from a great abundance, and that their disobedience was from their own senselessness, not from the weakness of the teacher, and this He proved from many others, both from the Ninevites and from the queen; then He also speaks of the punishment that will overtake them; enigmatically, it is true, but He speaks it nonetheless, weaving much fear into the narrative. For when, He says, the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, it passes through waterless places, seeking rest; and finding none, it says, I will return into my house from whence I came out. And when it is come, it finds it empty, swept, and garnished. 57.460 Then it goes, and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they enter in and dwell there, and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it be also unto this generation. From this He shows that not only in the age to come, but also here they will suffer most grievously. For since He had said, The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the judgment, and shall condemn this generation; lest they should despise Him because of the delay of time, and become more careless, He from this point brings the terrors upon them. Which the prophet Hosea also said, threatening them, that they shall be, Like the prophet that is distracted, a spiritual man; that is, like those who are maddened and possessed by evil spirits, the false prophets. For here he calls the false prophet a prophet that is distracted, such as are the soothsayers. This indeed Christ also shows, saying that they will suffer the last things. Do you see how from all sides He impels them to pay attention to what is being said, from the present things, from the future things, from those who were well-pleasing (I mean the Ninevites and the queen), from those who had stumbled, the Tyrians and Sodomites? Which the prophets also did, bringing forward the sons of Rechab, and the bride who does not forget her own adornment and her breastband, and the ox that knows its owner, and the donkey that recognizes the manger. So indeed here also, having demonstrated their senselessness by comparison, He then speaks of the punishment. What then is the meaning of what has been said? Just as those possessed by demons, He says, when they are freed from that sickness, if they become more careless, they draw down upon themselves a more grievous apparition; so also it happens with you. For indeed you were previously possessed by a demon, when you worshipped idols, and slaughtered your sons to the demons, displaying great madness; but nevertheless I did not abandon you, but cast out that demon through the prophets, and through myself I came again, wishing to cleanse you more. Since, therefore, you do not wish to pay attention, but have even drifted into greater wickedness (for to kill the prophets is much greater and more grievous than to slaughter even him); for this reason more grievous things

Προφήτην γὰρ ἐνταῦθα παρεξεστηκότα τὸν ψευδοπροφήτην φησὶν, οἷοί εἰσιν οἱ μάντεις. Τοῦτο δὴ καὶ ὁ Χριστὸς δηλῶν φησιν, ὅτι τὰ ἔσχατα πείσονται. Εἶδες πῶς πανταχόθεν αὐτοὺς ὠθεῖ ἐπὶ τὸ προσέχειν τοῖς λεγομένοις, ἀπὸ τῶν παρόντων, ἀπὸ τῶν μελλόντων, ἀπὸ τῶν εὐδοκιμησάντων (ἀπὸ τῶν Νινευϊτῶν λέγω καὶ τῆς βασιλίσσης), ἀπὸ τῶν προσκεκρουκότων Τυρίων καὶ Σοδομηνῶν; Ὃ καὶ οἱ προφῆται ἐποίουν, τοὺς υἱοὺς Ῥηχαβὶν παράγοντες, καὶ τὴν νύμφην τὴν οὐκ ἐπιλανθανομένην τοῦ κόσμου τοῦ οἰκείου καὶ τῆς στηθοδεσμίδος, καὶ τὸν βοῦν τὸν εἰδότα τὸν κτησάμενον, καὶ τὸν ὄνον τὸν τὴν φάτνην ἐπιγινώσκοντα. Οὕτω δὴ καὶ ἐνταῦθα ἀπὸ συγκρίσεως παραστήσας αὐτῶν τὴν ἀγνωμοσύνην, λέγει καὶ τὴν τιμωρίαν λοιπόν. Τί ποτ' οὖν ἐστι τὸ εἰρημένον; Καθάπερ οἱ δαιμονῶντες, φησὶν, ὅταν ἀπαλλαγῶσι τῆς ἀῤῥωστίας ἐκείνης, ἂν ῥᾳθυμότεροι γένωνται, χαλεπωτέραν ἐπισπῶνται καθ' ἑαυτῶν τὴν φαντασίαν· οὕτω καὶ ἐφ' ὑμῶν γίνεται. Καὶ γὰρ καὶ ἔμπροσθεν κατείχεσθε δαίμονι, ὅτε τὰ εἴδωλα προσεκυνεῖτε, καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς ὑμῶν ἐσφάττετε τοῖς δαιμονίοις, πολλὴν ἐπιδεικνύμενοι μανίαν· ἀλλ' ὅμως οὐκ ἐγκατέλιπον ὑμᾶς, ἀλλ' ἐξέβαλον τὸν δαίμονα ἐκεῖνον διὰ τῶν προφητῶν, καὶ δι' ἐμαυτοῦ πάλιν ἦλθον ἐπὶ πλεῖον ἐκκαθᾶραι ὑμᾶς βουλόμενος.
