wishing to show his providence, that not only does he deliver from terrible things, but he does not even permit you to suffer human things, he added this. For abundant is the provision of his help, unspeakable his love for mankind, not providing his help according to the measure of our need, but surpassing even our requests with his recompenses; The Lord will guard you from all evil; the Lord will guard your soul. For he who does not permit even these small things to grieve you, but extends his providence and his care to such a degree, much more will he render you unconquered by others. For each of the approaching griefs yields and gives way to the nod of God, which is not the case with men. But if he often delivered from this evil, he was not able to from another; or he was able, but was not willing; but the almighty and strong hand of God, whatever may come, will be able 55.347 to loose and deliver from all things, and to restore to freedom. The Lord will guard your coming in, and your going out. Another interpreter says, Your approach. Did you see a perpetual alliance present everywhere, when coming in, when going out? What could be equal to this love? what to this love for mankind? Here, however, it alludes to all of life; for all of life is in these things, in comings in and goings out. And making this clearer, he added; From now and for evermore. Not for one day, he says, nor for two, and three, and ten, and twenty, and a hundred, but perpetually; which is not the case with men; but many are the changes, continuous the fallings away, sudden the shifts; today a friend, tomorrow an enemy; today a helper, tomorrow he abandons. And often he not only abandons, but also makes war and plots more grievously than any enemy; but the things of God are immovable, perpetual, immortal, lasting, having no end. So that we may obtain them, let us also contribute what is from ourselves, so as to enjoy much security, and to attain the good things to come in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen. ON THE 121ST PSALM. I was glad when they said to me, We will go into the house of the Lord. 1. But now many are even displeased at the saying; and if someone going up to the horse races, or to the theaters of lawlessness, should call, many are the ones who run together; but if to the house of prayer, few are those who do not hesitate. But not so the Jews; than which what could be more grievous, when Christians appear more slothful even than them? And whence these so? Again I say: from the captivity they became better. From this, those who before this were nauseated, and leaving the temple, and the hearing of the divine oracles, giving themselves to mountains and glens and hills and much impiety, established the desire for that worship, and are inflamed toward the promise itself, and are set aright, and stand, and are gladdened in their mind. For since they were established in famine and thirst, not a famine of bread, and a thirst for water, but of hearing the word of the Lord, being chastened by this punishment they seek these things with greater desire, from which they had formerly fallen. Thus they also embraced the very ground, saying, that Your servants have taken pleasure in her stones, and they will have pity on her dust; and again, When shall I come, and appear before the face of God? and again, I will remember you from the land of Jordan and of the Hermonites, from the little mountain; and again; I remembered these things, and I poured out upon myself my
