Let no one be deceived, let him not be deluded by words! - Whoever has not first renounced the world and hated the things of the world from his soul and genuinely loved Christ alone and lost his own soul for His sake, being anxious for nothing concerning human life, but is as one dying every hour and weeps much for His sake, and mourns and will have desire for Him alone and through many tribulations and toils is deemed worthy to receive the Divine Spirit, which He gave to the divine apostles, so that through It he might cast out every passion, and easily accomplish every virtue and acquire abundant springs of tears, from which comes purification and contemplation of the soul, from which comes the knowledge of the divine will, (417) from which comes the illumination of the divine radiance and the vision of the unapproachable light, from which dispassion, holiness, is given to all who are deemed worthy to see and to have God in their heart and to be protected by Him and to keep His divine commandments inviolate, let him not dare to accept the priesthood and the care of souls, or to rule. For just as Christ is both offered to God His own Father and offers Himself, so also He both offers us and receives us again in this way. For the undertaking of such things will be unto judgment and condemnation, it is worse than a murderer, worse than an adulterer and a fornicator and all other sins. All these things therefore are now done toward mortals, for we sin against one another in every way; but he who shamelessly makes merchandise of divine things and sells the grace of the Spirit sins against God Himself in every way. For he who is set in the place of the Logos ought to live just as He did and thus say to that one: Follow!
