But we were driven back to this necessity; for the emperor was at his last breaths and, as the saying goes, was in his death agony. 15.11.18 The empress was thrown upon the ground at his head, still wearing t... and her scarlet-dyed sandals and epa... she was wounded and she did not know how ... the burning of her heart. And they were doing this with a certain forethought, knowing that, as soon as the emperor's life was given up, the empress too would breathe out her soul. But that intelligent empress could neither believe nor disbelieve them. She believed them, knowing them of old to be skilled men, but she had cause to disbelieve, because she saw that the emperor's life stood on a razor's edge. Standing as if on a balance-scale, she often stared intently at me and awaited my tripod, as was her habit even in other circumstances that occurred, and she was expecting whatever I might declare to her prophetically. My lady and dearest of sisters, Maria, the ornament of our family, the steadfast woman, the repository of all virtue, standing between the empress and the emperor at his little hand, sometimes prevented her from looking in the opposite direction toward the emperor. 15.11.19 And I again placed my right hand on his wrist and was examining the movement of his pulses, and as for her who often threw her hands to her head ...epsosan the veil (for in the state she was in, she was about to change her imperial robe as well), so many times I held back, perceiving some strength ... from the pulses. She often nudged me, because she wanted me to indicate to her the state of his pulse. But when ... I touched it again and I perceived that all his strength was giving way and that the arteries had come to a complete lack of pulse, I, for my part, turning my head aside, was dry and cold, bowing toward the earth and saying nothing and placing my two hands over my eyes and stepping backwards, I wept. And she, understanding the matter and giving up all hope, suddenly let out a great and piercing wail. 15.11.20 But how shall I describe the calamity that seized the whole inhabited world, or how shall I weep for my own sorrows? She both put off her imperial veil and, taking a small knife, she cut those hairs of hers close to the skin, and casting off the scarlet-dyed sandals from her feet she begged for any black sandals that were at hand. And wishing to change her purple robe as well, a cloak of black cloth at hand
