disposed, but for us the judgment-seat will be without blame. For we have fulfilled our part. May it be that neither we are put to shame for what we have said, nor you hide your faces, but that all may be able to stand with boldness at the judgment-seat of Christ, that we ourselves may be able to boast, and to receive some consolation for our own evils, your good repute, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom to the Father be the glory, together with the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen. 59.373.30 HOMILY 68. The crowd answered him; We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how do you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man? 1. Error is easily detected and weak, even if it is smeared on the outside with countless colors. And just as those who plaster decaying walls are not able to fix them through the plaster; so also are those who lie easily convicted; which indeed is what the Jews have suffered here. For when Christ said to them; When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all men to myself. We have heard, it says, from the law, that the Christ remains forever; and how do you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man? So they knew that the Christ is immortal, and has a life that has no end. Therefore they also knew what He was saying. For in many places in the Scriptures both the passion and the resurrection are found together. For Isaiah also puts these things together, saying, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and all that follows. And David in the second psalm, and in many other places, joins these two things. And the patriarch, having said, He lay down and slept as a lion, added; And as a lion’s whelp, who shall rouse him? He shows both the passion and the resurrection together. But these men, thinking to silence Him and to show from this that He was not the Christ, confess that the Christ remains forever. And see how maliciously. For they did not say, We have heard that the Christ suffers nothing, nor is crucified, but, That He remains forever; and yet this that was said was not contrary. For the passion was no hindrance to His immortality. From this it is possible to see, 59.374 that they understood many of the ambiguous things, and willingly acted maliciously. For since He had previously spoken about death above, hearing here the being lifted up, they suspected this. Then they say; Who is this Son of Man? And this maliciously. For do not think, he says, that we are speaking about you, and say that we oppose you out of enmity. For behold, we do not know about whom you are speaking, and yet we make a pronouncement. What then does Christ say? Silencing them, and showing that the passion is no hindrance to His remaining forever, Yet, he says, a little while the light is with you; indicating that His death is a removal. For the light of the sun is not destroyed, but having withdrawn for a little while, it appears again. Walk, while you have the light. What time does He mean here? is it all of the present life, or the time before the cross? I for my part think both. For through His ineffable love for mankind many believed even after the cross. And He says these things urging them to faith, which He has also done above, saying thus, Yet a little while I am with you. He who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. How many things indeed do the Jews now do, and they do not know what they are doing! but walking as in darkness, they think they are traveling the right road, but they are walking the contrary one, keeping Sabbaths, and observing the law, and the observances of foods; and they do not know where they are walking. For this reason He said; Walk into the light, that you may become sons of light; that is, sons to me. And yet in the pro 59.375 logue the evangelist says, that They were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, but of God, that is, of the Father; but here He Himself is said to beget them, that you may learn that there is one operation of the Father and the Son. When Jesus had said these things, and departed from them, He hid Himself. Why does He hide Himself now? For they neither took up stones against Him, nor blasphemed anything such as
