scriptural, as in, You have become to me for a satiety. For satiety produces aversion. You will be an abomination, therefore, he says, even while being called [sons], but the righteous, a holy people, a chosen nation, a royal priesthood, according to the voice of Peter. And these things, if the word is to the gentiles and idolaters; but if to those of Israel who disobeyed, that what they themselves were, being called children, and people, and inheritance of God, this is what those from the gentiles who have believed will become; and this is what is through the voice of Hosea: And I will call my people not my people. 2692 But the phrase, for a satiety, the others have rendered for an oath, since we are accustomed to make an oath not to suffer what those who suffer incurable things suffer, whose very name when spoken one turns away from. But the Lord will slay you; which is indeed the last of evils, signifying not so much the separation of the soul from the body, as the deprivation of God and of immortal life. These things, then, for you, but for those who serve me, from whatever nation they may be, the promised things. And if you wish to learn who they might be, the name will not yet be spoken, but it is sufficient to know only that it will be new, given to no one yet; which will be blessed, increasing and multiplying beyond every physical blessing. And they themselves will in turn bless the God who blessed them, in whom all things have become new: worship, and life, and name. For we offer to him worship in spirit and in truth, and service, and in newness of evangelical life we approach Christ, and having taken up the calling from him, as if a kind of crown, we are called Christians. In return for which we bring to him as fruit of lips and tongue our doxologies; and if there should be any necessity, we put him forward for faith through oaths according to the saying, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve, and in his name you shall swear.' But some say that a new name is promised, as to the patriarchs themselves, but since they were not persuaded, he gave to the gentiles the new name of Christians. But the saying, up to 'the true God,' Aquila translated thus: 'And to the servants he will call another name, by which he who is blessed in the land will be blessed, having been confirmed.' But Symmachus: 'And to his servants he will call another name, in which he who is blessed upon the earth will be blessed in God. Amen.' Having been freed, therefore, from the falsely named gods, they will know from their Savior the true God, and him whom he sent, the Lord Jesus Christ. When this has happened, they will forget the affliction which they endured while serving wicked demons, being commanded to sacrifice even their children in addition to the other sacrifices. There was also the practice of sacrificing to countless ones, on account of the plotting of those who had been neglected, which was active against those who did not have protection from God. But some say that it was said to those from Israel that they would no longer suffer what they endured while being impious. And so great will be the change for the better, that even the elements will seem to have been changed. For to those who rejoice, all things appear brighter, than to those who suffer from dizziness in darkness and in the steady noonday. Or because previously, seeing the heaven and the earth in a different way, they worshipped the creation rather than the creator; but now they will see these things as new, when they come to know them as creations of God. Therefore he says: 2693 They will no longer remember the former things, casting away the opinions which they had, as if concerning gods. But they will find exultation, he says, in her, that is, in the new Jerusalem, the Church, about which he adds; for exultation itself, and pure piety, will be Jerusalem for them. Or that, I will make Jerusalem my joy, rejoicing in the people, to whom I have promised the new name. For their way of life will accomplish such things, that deeds worthy of weeping and crying will no longer be heard among them. But he weaves his discourse as from a slander of the physical Jerusalem, whose leaders, judging with bribes, condemned the innocent, forcing them to lament with a cry, concerning which Jeremiah says: "O deceitful city, all is oppression within her," and what follows. And another prophet says: "They struck the heads of the poor, and turned aside the way of the humble." But of Christ

Τινὲς δὲ τοῖς ἐξ Ἰσραὴλ εἰρῆσθαί φασι τὸ μηκέτι πείσεσθαι, ἅπερ ἀσεβοῦντες ὑπέμενον. Τοσαύτη δὲ ἡ πρὸς τὸ κρεῖττον ἔσται μεταβολὴ, ὡς καὶ τὰ στοιχεῖα μεταβεβλῆσθαι δοκεῖν. Τοῖς γὰρ χαίρουσι πάντα φαιδρότερα φαίνεται, τῶν ἐν συ καὶ ἐν σταθερᾷ μεσημβρίᾳ σκοτοδινιώντων. Ἢ ὅτι ἄλλως πρότερον ὁρῶντες τὸν οὐρανὸν, καὶ τὴν γῆν, ἐσέβοντο τὴν κτίσιν παρὰ τὸν κτίσαντα· νῦν δὲ καινὰ ταῦτα βλέψονται, ἡνίκα Θεοῦ γνώσονται δημιουργήματα. ∆ιό φησιν· 2693 Οὐκέτι μεμνήσονται τῶν προτέρων, τὰς δόξας, ἃς εἶχον, ὡς περὶ θεῶν ἀποβάλλοντες. Ὡς ἐκ διαβολῆς δὲ τῆς αἰσθητῆς Ἱερουσαλὴμ ὑφαίνει τὸν λόγον, ἧς οἱ ἡγούμενοι μετὰ δώρων κρίνοντες ἀθώων κατεψηφίζοντο, μετὰ κραυγῆς αὐτοὺς θρηνεῖν ἀναγκάζοντες, περὶ ἧς Ἱερεμίας φησίν· "Ὦ πόλις ψευδὴς, ὅλη καταδυναστεία ἐν αὐτῇ," καὶ τὰ ἑπόμενα.
