advancing a sign or a mile still further at hand, not finding the road, and so turns to more things, and thus growing weary and not knowing by what way to lead himself on the journey, he would perhaps not be able to find it, unless he should turn back by the way he entered, -so also every heresy, intending to discover a shortcut, has run aground through its long journey, and for it an unbreakable wall was found, the entanglement of folly and ignorance; and such a one would not find the way to come to the true road, unless each should turn back to the archetype of the road, that is, the royal one; as also the law clearly cried out, when holy Moses said to the king of Edom, that "thus says your brother Israel: I will pass by your borders into a land which the Lord swore to our fathers to give, a land flowing with milk and honey, the land of the Amorites and Perizzites and Girgashites and Jebusites and Hiv2.378 ites and Canaanites and Hittites, a land flowing with milk and honey. We will not turn aside to the right or to the left, we will drink water for silver and we will eat food for silver; we will not turn aside from here or from there, we will go by the royal road." For there is a royal road, which is the church of God and the journey of truth. But each of these, having abandoned the royal road, and having turned to the right or to the left, giving itself over for a long time will then be dragged into error, and the pathlessness of error has no more measure in each heresy. 13. Come now, therefore, servants of God, and sons of the holy church of God, who know the sure canon and walk the road of truth, let us not be drawn away by voices and led by the voice of each counterfeit practice. For their roads are treacherous and the path of their counterfeit notion is steep; they boast of great things and do not know even the small things; they promise freedom, while being themselves slaves of sin; they boast of greater things and have not at all grasped the small ones. But concerning these so-called Cathari, but who are impure if one must speak the truth, I think enough has been said sufficiently up to this point. But casting this one aside like the face of a basilisk, which by the pretense of its name possesses a most excellent epithet, but in encounter causes death. But we, having struck this one by the power of the wood of the cross, let us set out again for the others, invoking the supplication of God himself, to accompany, to remain with, to be with, to work with, to save, to instruct, to deem us worthy to speak the truth, so that we ourselves, by saying something falsely, may not fall into the same things as those heresies that did not teach the world the truth. Moreover, also those in Africa and Byzacena, those from a certain Donatus, thus called Donatists. are those who think similar things to these, they too are rebels, supposedly for not having communion with those who lapsed in the 2.379 persecution. They will be overthrown by the same things, just as also the Novatians who are yoked differently with them, or rather the so-called Cathari. Therefore we did not need to work out anything concerning these, but we have joined them together with those like them. But these again fell away more excessively and worse. For they think concerning the faith according to Arius; and they will be overthrown likewise concerning the faith of which they think badly, just as Arius also was overthrown by the words of truth, he thinking the same things as these, and these as he. And passing over this one again, we shall proceed to the next, as if having trodden down terrible serpents in the Lord. Against the Angelics, 40, and in the series, 60. 1. We have heard of the heresy of the Angelics * and we have been instructed in the name only, but we do not know very clearly what such a heresy is, because perhaps having arisen at some time, it later ceased and was completely dissolved. But for what reason it got the name, we do not know. For either from some people asserting that the world was created by angels, and if it, asserting this, to the
