attacking, they did not harm them at all. And the reason was the alliance of God, the impulse from above, the help not made with hands. For this reason, having spoken of the deliverance from evils, he also speaks of the one who provided the deliverance, and with praise. Blessed is the Lord, who has not given us as a prey to their teeth. Our soul has been delivered as a sparrow out of the snare of the fowlers. Do you see how he shows both their own weakness, and the strength of those others? For the one party came on like wild beasts and lions, ready to taste their very flesh, armed with power and rage; while the others were weaker than any sparrow. For then especially are the wonders of God shown, when the weak prevail over the strong. The plot was not intolerable in this way only, that the one party were strong and terrible, and full of great wrath, and prepared to taste their flesh; while the others were weak, and few, and easy to attack; but also because they were caught in the midst of terrors, having stepped into the very difficulties, having wars set around them on all sides; but He who is resourceful and able to save from every side, even after we had fallen into terrors, He delivered us, he says, with great ease. Therefore, wishing to show this, he said thus: Our soul has been delivered as a sparrow out of the snare of the fowlers. The snare is broken, and we are delivered. Then showing how, he added: Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Do you see the power of the protector? Do you see the strength? He removed the very occasions of the plot. One might also take this in an anagogical sense concerning the devil, and the race of men. For it shows how He snatched them away, how He loosed his plots; for this happened after He said to the disciples: Tread on serpents and scorpions, and on all the power of the enemy. For no longer is the battle direct, nor is the array equal, but he lies prostrate, having fallen, while you stand upright, striking from above; he is weakened, while you are strong. Whence then does he often conquer? From our sluggishness, from the carelessness of those who sleep. So that if you should wish to stand against him, he does not dare to draw up in battle. But if he overcomes someone sleeping, this is not of his power, but of your negligence. For who would not overpower one who is sleeping, even if he were the weakest of all? The strong 55.356 man has been bound, his goods have been plundered, his power has been destroyed, his lodging has been torn open, his swords have failed. What more than these do you want? Why do you fear him? Why are you afraid. You were commanded to trample on the weakened one; whence do you tremble? Tell me; whence do you struggle? Do you not consider what kind of helper you have? For not only has the enemy become weaker, but your help is also greater. The leapings of the flesh have been suppressed, the burden of sin has vanished, you have received the grace of the Spirit, the power of anointing. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh. He has made the flesh obedient, He has bestowed weapons on you, the breastplate of righteousness, the belt of truth, the helmet of salvation, the shield of faith, the sword of the Spirit, He has given a pledge, with His body He feeds you, with His blood He gives you drink, He has entrusted to you the cross as a spear, a spear that is never bent; He bound that one, He cast him to the ground. So your defeat henceforth is inexcusable, and you have no pardon when you are struck. For you have countless resources for conquering. The snare is broken, and we are delivered. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth. Do you see what a general you have? What a king? The creator of this universe?

προσβάλλοντες, οὐδὲν αὐτοὺς παρέβλαψαν. Τὸ δὲ αἴτιον ἡ τοῦ Θεοῦ συμμαχία, ἡ ἄνωθεν ῥοπὴ, ἡ ἀχείρωτος βοήθεια. ∆ιὰ δὴ τοῦτο καὶ αὐτὸς εἰπὼν τὴν ἀπαλλαγὴν τῶν κακῶν, λέγει καὶ τὸν τὴν ἀπαλλαγὴν παρεσχηκότα, καὶ μετὰ εὐφημίας. Εὐλογητὸς Κύριος, ὃς οὐκ ἔδωκεν ἡμᾶς εἰς θήραν τοῖς ὀδοῦσιν αὐτῶν. Ἡ ψυχὴ ἡμῶν ὡς στρουθίον ἐῤῥύσθη ἐκ τῆς παγίδος τῶν θηρευόντων. Εἶδες πῶς καὶ τὴν οἰκείαν ἀσθένειαν παρίστησι, καὶ τὴν ἐκείνων ἰσχύν; Οἱ μὲν γὰρ ὡς θηρία καὶ λέοντες ἐπῄεσαν, αὐτῶν ἕτοιμοι τῶν σαρκῶν ἀπογεύσασθαι, καὶ τῇ δυνάμει καὶ τῷ θυμῷ καθωπλισμένοι· οἱ δὲ στρουθίου παντὸς ἀσθενέστερον διέκειντο. Τότε γὰρ μάλιστα διαδείκνυται τοῦ Θεοῦ τὰ θαύματα, ὅτε οἱ ἀσθενεῖς τῶν δυνατῶν κρατοῦσιν. Οὐ ταύτῃ δὲ μόνον ἀφόρητος ἦν ἡ ἐπιβουλὴ, ὅτι οἱ μὲν δυνατοὶ καὶ φοβεροὶ, καὶ θυμοῦ πολλοῦ γέμοντες, καὶ παρεσκευασμένοι τῶν σαρκῶν ἀπογεύσασθαι· οἱ δὲ ἀσθενεῖς, καὶ ὀλίγοι, καὶ εὐεπιχείρητοι· ἀλλ' ὅτι καὶ ἐν μέσοις ἀπειλημμένοι τοῖς δεινοῖς, εἰς αὐτὰ ἐμβεβηκότες τὰ δυσχερῆ, πάντοθεν πολέμους ἔχοντες περικειμένους· ἀλλ' ὁ εὔπορος καὶ πανταχόθεν δυνάμενος διασώζειν, καὶ μετὰ τὸ ἐμπεσεῖν εἰς τὰ δεινὰ, μετὰ πολλῆς ἡμᾶς, φησὶν, ἀπήλλαξε τῆς εὐκολίας. Ὅπερ οὖν παραστῆσαι βουλόμενος, οὕτως εἶπεν· Ἡ ψυχὴ ἡμῶν ὡς στρουθίον ἐῤῥύσθη ἐκ τῆς παγίδος τῶν θηρευόντων. Ἡ παγὶς συνετρίβη, καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐῤῥύσθημεν. Εἶτα δεικνὺς καὶ πῶς, ἐπήγαγεν· Ἡ βοήθεια ἡμῶν ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου, τοῦ ποιήσαντος τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν. Εἶδες τὴν δύναμιν τοῦ προστάτου; εἶδες τὴν ἰσχύν; Καὶ αὐτὰς τὰς ἀφορμὰς τῆς ἐπιβουλῆς ἀνεῖλε. Τοῦτό τις καὶ κατὰ ἀναγωγὴν ἂν ἐκλάβοι ἐπὶ τοῦ διαβόλου, καὶ τοῦ γένους τοῦ τῶν ἀνθρώπων. ∆είκνυσι γὰρ πῶς ἐξήρπασε, πῶς ἐξέλυσεν αὐτοῦ τὰς ἐπιβουλάς· τοῦτο γὰρ γέγονεν ἀφ' οὗ πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς εἶπε· Πατεῖτε ἐπάνω ὄφεων καὶ σκορπίων, καὶ ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν δύναμιν τοῦ ἐχθροῦ. Οὐκ ἔτι γὰρ ἐξ εὐθείας ἡ μάχη, οὐδὲ ἐξίσης ἡ παράταξις, ἀλλ' ὁ μὲν κεῖται πρηνὴς καταπεπτωκὼς, σὺ δὲ ἕστηκας ὄρθιος, ἄνωθεν βάλλων· ὁ μὲν ἐκνενευρισμένος, σὺ δὲ ἰσχυρός. Πόθεν οὖν νικᾷ πολλάκις; Ἀπὸ τῆς νωθείας τῆς ἡμετέρας, ἀπὸ τῆς ῥᾳθυμίας τῶν καθευδόντων. Ὥστε εἰ βουληθείης ἐναντίον στῆναι, οὐ τολμᾷ παρατάξασθαι. Εἰ δὲ καθεύδοντος περιγίνεται, τοῦτο οὐ τῆς ἐκείνου δυνάμεως, ἀλλὰ τῆς σῆς ὀλιγωρίας. Τίς γὰρ οὐκ ἂν κρατήσειε τοῦ καθεύδοντος, κἂν ἁπάντων ἀσθενέστερος ἦ; Ἐδέθη ὁ ἰσχυ 55.356 ρὸς, τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ διηρπάγη, ἡ δύναμις αὐτοῦ κατελύθη, τὸ καταγώγιον ἀνεῤῥάγη, αἱ ῥομφαῖαι αὐτοῦ ἐξέλιπον. Τί πλέον τούτων βούλει; τίνος ἕνεκεν αὐτὸν φοβῇ; τίνος ἕνεκεν δέδοικας. Πατεῖν ἐκελεύσθης τὸν ἐκνενευρισμένον· πόθεν τρέμεις; εἰπέ μοι· πόθεν ἀγωνιᾷς; Οὐκ ἐννοεῖς οἷον ἔχεις βοηθόν; Οὐδὲ γὰρ μόνον ὁ ἐχθρὸς γέγονεν ἀσθενέστερος, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἡ βοήθειά σου μείζων. Τῆς σαρκὸς τὰ σκιρτήματα κατεστάλη, τῆς ἁμαρτίας τὸ φορτίον ἠφανίσθη, Πνεύματος ἔλαβες χάριν, ἀλείμματος δύναμιν. Τὸ γὰρ ἀδύνατον τοῦ νόμου, ἐν ᾧ ἠσθένει διὰ τῆς σαρκὸς, ὁ Θεὸς τὸν Υἱὸν αὐτοῦ πέμψας ἐν ὁμοιώματι σαρκὸς ἁμαρτίας, καὶ περὶ ἁμαρτίας κατέκρινε τὴν ἁμαρτίαν ἐν τῇ σαρκὶ, ἵνα τὸ δικαίωμα τοῦ νόμου πληρωθῇ ἐν ἡμῖν τοῖς μὴ κατὰ σάρκα περιπατοῦσι. Τὴν σάρκα εὐήνιον ἐποίησεν, ὅπλα σοι ἐχαρίσατο, θώρακα δικαιοσύνης, ζώνην ἀληθείας, κράνος σωτηρίας, ἀσπίδα πίστεως, μάχαιραν Πνεύματος, ἀῤῥαβῶνα δέδωκε, τῷ σώματι αὐτοῦ τρέφει σε, τῷ αἵματι αὐτοῦ ποτίζει σε, σταυρόν σοι ἐνεχείρισεν ὡς δόρυ, δόρυ μηδέποτε καμπτόμενον· ἐκεῖνον ἔδησε, χαμαὶ ἔῤῥιψεν. Ὥστε ἀναπολόγητός σου λοιπὸν ἡ ἧττα, καὶ συγγνώμην οὐκ ἔχεις βαλλόμενος. Μυρίας γὰρ ἔχεις πρὸς τὸ νικᾷν ἀφορμάς. Ἡ παγὶς συνετρίβη, καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐῤῥύσθημεν. Ἡ βοήθεια ἡμῶν ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου τοῦ ποιήσαντος τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν. Ὁρᾷς οἷον ἔχεις στρατηγόν; οἷον βασιλέα; τὸν τοῦδε τοῦ παντὸς δημιουργόν;
