being disciplined. So indeed, the whole thing happened for this reason, so that their soul might become better, being corrected by the infliction of terrible things, and being made more eager by the gift of good things. 55.359 Do good, O Lord, to the good. Another, Do good. And to the upright in heart. But those who turn aside to crooked ways, the Lord will lead away with the workers of iniquity. Do you see that the beginnings of both enjoying good things and of enduring punishments come from us everywhere? But even if the beginnings are from us, yet even so the great splendor of God's love for humanity is shown; for with great abundance He overcomes us with His rewards; and for sins He inflicts a proportionate punishment, but for good deeds He provides a surpassing reward. And here He calls upright those who are without deceit, without pretense, who have nothing shadowy and treacherous. For such is the upright thing, which God especially seeks everywhere. Such is virtue, something smooth and easy, just as wickedness is twisted, complicated, inextricable; and this one can see from the things themselves. For consider one who wants to lie and weave deceits, how many things he attempts, how much complexity he needs, what kind of fabricated words, how much cleverness. But the one who speaks the truth needs no toil, no difficulty, no hypocrisy, no contrivances, nothing of the sort, since truth itself shines through on its own. For just as unattractive bodies need many external artifices and coverings to conceal their natural ugliness; while things that are beautiful by nature shine, competing on their own; so one can find it to be with falsehood and truth, and with vice and virtue. From which it is clear that even before the punishment vice brings the punishment, and before the reward virtue gives the recompense. For just as the one has its prizes in itself even before the crowns, so also the other has its punishment in itself even before the chastisement. For what could be more grievous than sin, in terms of punishment? For this reason indeed Paul, having mentioned those who prostitute themselves, who give away their own prime of life, and overturn the laws of nature, said that this is the greatest punishment even before the chastisement. For males, he says, committing shameful acts with males, and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error; calling the debauchery and the deed the recompense of their sin. Peace be upon Israel. He concluded the discourse with a prayer. For such are the souls of the saints; with exhortation and counsel they add a prayer, introducing the greatest alliance for those who hear. And by peace here, he means not only this perceptible peace, but also that which is higher than it, and from which this one is born, and he prays that the soul may not be in strife with itself, with the passions waging war upon it. Let us also seek this peace, so that we may be able to obtain the promised good things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord 55.360 Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory, and the power, for ever and ever. Amen. TO THE 125TH PSALM. When the Lord restored the captivity of Zion, we became like those who are comforted. Another interpreter says, When the Lord restores the captivity, we shall be comforted.

Ὁ δὲ τὴν ἀλήθειαν λέγων, οὐ πόνου, οὐ δυσκολίας, οὐχ ὑποκρίσεως, οὐ μηχανημάτων, οὐδενὸς δεῖται τοιούτου, αὐτῆς καθ' ἑαυτὴν ἐκείνης διαλαμπούσης. Καθάπερ γὰρ τὰ μὲν ἄμορφα τῶν σωμάτων πολλῶν ἔξωθεν δεῖται τῶν τεχνασμάτων καὶ τῶν ἐπικαλυμμάτων τὴν ἀπὸ τῆς φύσεως ἀμορφίαν συσκιαζόντων· τὰ δὲ φύσει καλὰ αὐτὰ καθ' ἑαυτὰ ἀγωνιζόμενα λάμπει· οὕτω καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ ψεύδους καὶ τῆς ἀληθείας ἔστιν εὑρεῖν, καὶ τῆς κακίας, καὶ τῆς ἀρετῆς. Ὅθεν δῆλον, ὅτι καὶ πρὸ τῆς κολάσεως ἡ κακία τὴν κόλασιν ἐπάγει, καὶ πρὸ τῆς ἀντιδόσεως ἡ ἀρετὴ τὴν ἀμοιβὴν δίδωσιν. Ὥσπερ γὰρ ἐκείνη ἐν ἑαυτῇ τὰ ἔπαθλα ἔχει καὶ πρὸ τῶν στεφάνων· οὕτω καὶ αὕτη ἐν ἑαυτῇ τὴν τιμωρίαν ἔχει καὶ πρὸ τῆς κολάσεως. Τί γὰρ ἂν γένοιτο χαλεπώτερον ἁμαρτίας εἰς τιμωρίας λόγον; ∆ιὰ δὴ τοῦτο καὶ ὁ Παῦλος τῶν ἡταιρηκότων μνημονεύσας, τῶν τὴν ὥραν τὴν ἑαυτῶν ἀποδιδομένων, καὶ τῆς φύσεως τοὺς νόμους ἀνατρεπόντων, ταύτην ἔφησε τιμωρίαν μεγίστην εἶναι καὶ πρὸ τῆς κολάσεως. Ἄρσενες γὰρ, φησὶν, ἐν ἄρσεσι τὴν ἀσχημοσύνην κατεργαζόμενοι, καὶ τὴν ἀντιμισθίαν, ἣν ἔδει, τῆς πλάνης αὐτῶν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ἀπολαμβάνοντες· ἀντιμισθίαν τῆς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν τὴν ἀσέλγειαν καὶ τὴν πρᾶξιν καλῶν. Εἰρήνη ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰσραήλ. Εἰς εὐχὴν τὸν λόγον κατέκλεισε. Τοιαῦται γὰρ αἱ τῶν ἁγίων ψυχαί· μετὰ τῆς παραινέσεως καὶ τῆς συμβουλῆς τὴν εὐχὴν προστιθέασι, μεγίστην συμμαχίαν εἰσάγουσαι τοῖς ἀκούουσιν. Εἰρήνην δὲ ἐνταῦθα, οὐ ταύτην μόνην τὴν αἰσθητὴν, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὴν ταύτης ὑψηλοτέραν, καὶ ὅθεν καὶ αὕτη τίκτεται, λέγει, καὶ εὔχεται ὥστε μὴ στασιάζειν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτὴν πρὸς ἑαυτὴν τῶν παθῶν τὸν πόλεμον ἐπεισάγουσαν. Ταύτην δὴ καὶ ἡμεῖς τὴν εἰρήνην ζητῶμεν, ἵνα τῶν ἐπηγγελμένων ἀγαθῶν δυνηθῶμεν τυχεῖν, χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου 55.360 ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ᾧ ἡ δόξα, καὶ τὸ κράτος, εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
