we shall enjoy all the good things there; which may it be granted to all of us to obtain, through the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 58.475 HOMILY 40. Another parable put he forth unto them, saying; The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field. But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him; Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both therefore grow together until the harvest. 1. What is the difference between this parable and the one before it? There He speaks of them that had not attended to him at all, but had started away and cast away the seed; but here, he speaks of the sects of the heretics. For, that this might not disturb the disciples, he foretells this also, after having taught them why He speaks in parables. For that parable says that they did not receive it; but this, that they received corrupters. For this is also a method of the devil, always to bring in error with truth, coloring it with many resemblances, so as easily to deceive the easily deceived. For this reason He calls it not some other seed, but tares, which in appearance somewhat resembles wheat. Then He also states the manner of the plot. For while men slept, He says. He hangs no small danger over the heads of the rulers from this, to whom the keeping of the field has been especially entrusted; not only to the rulers, but also to the ruled. He shows also that error comes after the truth; which the course of events 58.476 also testifies. For after the prophets, the false prophets; and after the apostles, the false apostles; and after Christ, the antichrist. For unless the devil sees what to imitate, or against whom to plot, he neither attempts, nor knows how. And now, therefore, since he saw that one produced a hundred, another sixty, another thirty, he proceeds to another way. For since he could not snatch away what was rooted, nor choke, nor burn it, he plots by another deceit, introducing his own. And how do the sleeping differ, he says, from those who imitate the way? Because there he snatched it away immediately; for he did not even allow it to take root; but here he needed a greater device. And Christ says these things, teaching us to be always watchful. For even if you escape those harms, he says, there is another harm. For as there through the way, and the rock, and the thorns, so also here through sleep destruction comes; so that there is need of continuous watchfulness. Wherefore He also said: But he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved. Such a thing happened also from the beginning. For many of the rulers, introducing wicked men into the churches, hidden heresiarchs, have provided great ease for such a plot. For the devil no longer has need of labors, when he plants them in the midst. And how is it possible not to sleep? he says. Natural sleep, indeed, is not possible; but that of the will is possible. Wherefore Paul also said: Watch ye, stand fast in the faith. Then he shows that the thing is also superfluous, not only harmful. For after the field has been tilled, and there is need of nothing, then this one sows over it; just as the heretics do, who for no other reason than vainglory inject their own poison. Not from 58.477 this only, but also from what follows he describes with accuracy their whole scene. For when the blade was sprung up, he says, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also; which these also do. For in the beginning they conceal themselves; but when they have gained much confidence, and some of the word
