it had seals, and guards were sitting by; and while the stone was lying upon the body, the body rose; forty days passed, and the supply of the Spirit came, and all immediately proclaimed him. This is, He shall glorify him in himself, and shall immediately glorify him; not through angels and archangels, nor through any other power, but through himself. 3. And how did He glorify Him through Him? By having done all things for the glory of the Son; and yet the Son did all things. Do you see that He attributes the things done by Himself to the Father? Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek 59.393 me, and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’; so I say to you now. He begins then with the sorrowful things after the supper. For when Judas went out, it was no longer evening, but night. For since they were about to come upon them a little later, it was necessary to entrust all things to them, so that they might have them in memory; or rather, the Spirit reminded them of all things. For it was likely that they would lose many things, since they were hearing them then for the first time, and were about to endure such trials. For being weighed down with sleep, as another evangelist also says, and being overcome by despondency, as Christ himself also says: ‘But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart’; how could they have retained all these things accurately? Why then was it said? It became no small gain for them for the glory of Christ, to know clearly afterwards when they were reminded, that they had long ago heard these things from Christ. And for what reason does he cast down their soul beforehand, saying, ‘Yet a little while I am with you’? For to the Jews it was said with good reason; but for what reason do you bring us equally into the same rank with those ungrateful ones? By no means. And for what reason did he say, ‘As I said to the Jews’? He reminded them that he was not now foretelling these things because of the presence of the terrible events; but that he knew them from the beginning, and those who heard were themselves witnesses that he had also said these things to the Jews. For this reason he also added, ‘Little children’; so that when they heard, ‘As I said to the Jews,’ they might not think that what was said had been said to them in the same way. He says these things, therefore, not to cast them down, but to comfort them, so that the terrible things, coming upon them unexpectedly, might not utterly disturb them. ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ He shows that his death is a removal and a better translation, to a place not receiving corruptible bodies. He says these things, both stirring up their longing for him and making it more fervent. For you know that when we see some of our dearest ones departing, we are especially inflamed, and more so when we see them going to a place to which it is not even possible for us to go. Therefore, he said these things to frighten them, but to these to kindle their longing. Such is the place, that not only they, but not even you, the most beloved, are able to come there. Here he also shows his own dignity. And to you I say now. Why, ‘Now’? To them in one way, and to you in another; that is, not with them. But where did the Jews seek him? And where did the disciples? The disciples, when they fled; but the Jews, when they were suffering irreparable and terrible things, surpassing all description, when their city was captured, and the God-sent wrath was brought upon them from every side. To them, therefore, he spoke then because of their unbelief, but to you now, so that the terrible things might not come unexpectedly. A new commandment I give to you. For since it was likely that they would fall into confusion hearing these things, as being about to be desolate, he comforts them, clothing them with the root and security of all good things, love; as if he were saying: Are you grieved that I am going away? but if you love one another, you will be stronger. Why then did he not say this? Because he said what would profit them more than this: ‘By this all will know that you are my disciples.’ For by this he at the same time showed that the company would not be extinguished, since he also gave them a distinguishing mark. 59.394 And he said this when their betrayer was separated. And how does he call it a new commandment, when it is also found in the Old [Testament]? He himself made it new by the manner; for he added: ‘As I have loved you.’ For not

Οὐ καταβάλλων τοίνυν αὐτοὺς, ἀλλὰ παραμυθούμενος ταῦτά φησιν, ἵνα μὴ ἀπροσδόκητα ἐπιστάντα αὐτοῖς τὰ δεινὰ ἐκταράξῃ, Ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω, ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν. ∆είκνυσιν, ὅτι ὁ θάνατος αὐτοῦ μετάστασίς ἐστι καὶ μετάθεσις ἀμείνων, εἰς τόπον σώματα οὐ δεχόμενον φθαρτά. Ταῦτα δὲ λέγει, καὶ τὸν εἰς αὐτὸν διεγείρων πόθον καὶ θερμότερον ποιῶν. Ἴστε γὰρ ὅτι ἐπειδὰν ἴδωμεν τῶν φιλτάτων τινὰς ἀναχωροῦντας, μάλιστα διαθερμαινόμεθα, καὶ μᾶλλον ὅταν ἴδωμεν εἰς τόπον ἀπιόντας, εἰς ὃν οὐδὲ δυνατὸν ἡμῖν ἀπελθεῖν. Ἐκείνους μὲν οὖν φοβῶν, ταῦτα ἔλεγε, τούτοις δὲ τὸν πόθον ἐξάπτων. Τοιοῦτός ἐστιν ὁ τόπος, ὥστε μὴ μόνον ἐκείνους, ἀλλὰ μηδὲ ὑμᾶς τοὺς φιλτάτους δύνασθαι παραγενέσθαι ἐκεῖ. Ποῦ δὲ αὐτὸν ἐζήτησαν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι; ποῦ δὲ οἱ μαθηταί; Οἱ μαθηταὶ μὲν, ὅτε ἔφυγον· οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι δὲ, ὅτε τὰ ἀνήκεστα ἔπασχον δεινὰ καὶ πάντα ὑπερβαίνοντα λόγον, τῆς πόλεως αὐτῆς ἁλούσης, καὶ τῆς θεηλάτου πάντοθεν κατ' αὐτῶν φερομένης ὀργῆς. Ἐκείνοις μὲν οὖν τότε ἔλεγε διὰ τὴν ἀπιστίαν, ὑμῖν δὲ νῦν, διὰ τὸ μὴ ἀπροσδόκητα ἐπελθεῖν τὰ δεινά. Ἐντολὴν καινὴν δίδωμι ὑμῖν.
