let us put the promises to work. For if we do not do this, the promise alone is not sufficient to save. Indeed, He also promised Judas that he would be seated on the throne with the eleven disciples; and he was not seated; and the reason was not with the one who promised, but with the one who proved unworthy of the promise. Therefore, we too, having the promise of a kingdom, let us not be idle, but let us contribute what is from ourselves, so that we may be able to obtain the eternal good things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and power for ever and ever. Amen. ON THE 128TH PSALM. Many a time have they fought against me from my youth, let Israel now say. Many a time have they fought against me from my youth; yet they have not prevailed against me. Another interpreter says, But they could not prevail against me. And this psalm is connected to the one before it. For since the work of building was being interrupted, and the work was not going towards its end, leading them to good hopes, so that they might not despair, from past events he prepares them to be confident about future ones, and teaches them to say these words. And what words? That although attacking many times, they were not strong enough to overcome, nor did they achieve a complete victory. And yet they took captives, he says, and removed them to a foreign land, and won many wars. Most certainly even then they prevailed not from their own strength, but from the sin of the Jews. Besides, they did not remain as victors until the end. For they were not strong enough to completely annihilate the race, nor wipe out the city, nor utterly destroy the nation; but for a little while, God permitting, they prevailed, then were defeated again. And how were they defeated? By the Jews returning to their former prosperity. Which another interpreter also indicating, said, But they have not overpowered me. The sinners wrought upon my back, they lengthened their iniquity. What is this? They did not plot in a random way, he says, but they contrived and labored much, weaving deceits, attacking secretly. For 'Upon my back' indicates either the deceitful and treacherous, or that which is by force and with much vehemence. That is, they attempted to crush my very strength. But another, instead of 'wrought,' 55.372 said 'plowed,' to show that they made a work of their plot against the righteous. They lengthened their iniquity. What is it that he says? He shows that they attacked not only with vehemence, but also with much persistence, spending much time, and making a work of their plotting, and persevering continually. But they gained nothing more. not because of our strength, but because of God's power. Wherefore, showing the one who raises the trophy, and who works the victory, he added: The righteous Lord has cut asunder the necks of sinners. But another, instead of 'necks,' said 'snares,' indicating the plots, the assaults, the contrivances. And he well said not 'loosed,' but 'cut asunder,' that he might more clearly show that he did this, making their counsels utterly useless. For when the city began to be built again, many from all sides were attacking, consumed by envy, and they did this not once, nor twice, but many times. This also happened in the case of the Church. For when it began to grow, all continually attacked: in the beginning, kings, and peoples, and tyrants; and after these things, the plots of the heresies, and a great and varied war from all sides was fanned into flame; but nevertheless it had no strength; but the things of the enemies were loosed,
