the others? For if I should bring Paul into the midst, and wish to demand from him a strict examination of what has happened, he will not be able to withstand it. For what will he be able to say? He read the prophets with precision, being a zealot for the paternal law, he saw signs being performed, and yet he remained a persecutor, and did not change his ways before, until he enjoyed that wondrous vision, and heard that dreadful voice; but before this he remained stirring up and confounding all things. But nevertheless God, passing over all those things 55.375, both called him, and deemed him worthy of much grace. What about that chief, Peter? after countless wonders and signs, and so much exhortation and counsel, was he not convicted when he fell into that grievous fall? But nevertheless He passed over that too, and established him as first of the apostles. Wherefore He said: Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. And after these things, if He should come to judge not with mercy and love for mankind, but to make a strict examination, He will surely find all men liable. Wherefore Paul also said: I am not conscious of anything against myself, but I am not thereby justified. If you, Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord. The doubling is not for no reason, but is of one marveling and astonished at the great mass of His love for mankind, and His boundless greatness, and the vast sea of His goodness. who shall stand? And he did not say, who shall escape? but, Who shall stand? He will not even be able to stand, he says. For with you there is propitiation. What is, For with you there is propitiation? It is not in our right actions, but in Your goodness that we are to escape punishment. For to escape judgment lies in Your love for mankind. And if we do not enjoy this, our own things are not sufficient to rescue us from the coming wrath. 3. Declaring this also through the prophet He said: I am He who blots out your iniquities. That is, this is mine, of my goodness, of my love for mankind. Since your own things are never sufficient for freedom from punishment, unless those of my love for mankind are added. And again: I bear with you. For your name's sake I have waited for you, Lord. My soul has waited for your word, my soul has hoped in the Lord. Another, For the sake of your law. Yet another, For the sake of your word being known. But what he says, is this: because of your love for mankind, because of your law, I expected salvation; since if I had looked to my own things, I would long ago have given up, long ago have despaired; but now, attending to your law and to your word, I have good hopes. To what word? To that of love for mankind. For He it is who says: As the heaven is distant from the earth, so are my counsels distant from your counsel, and my ways from your ways. And again: As the heaven is high above the earth, so has the Lord made his mercy strong upon them that fear him. And again: As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our iniquities from us. That is, not only did I save those who acted rightly, but I also spared those who sinned, and in the midst of your trespasses I showed my help and care. Another says, That you may be feared, I have waited for the Lord. Feared by whom? By the enemies, by those who plot against me, by those who hate me. And what again is, For your name's sake? That even if I am a sinner, he says, and full of countless evils, yet I knew that so that your name might not be profaned, you would not overlook us perishing. Which He himself also says in 55.376 Ezekiel: Not for your sake do I act, but for my name's sake, that it may not be profaned among the nations. That is, we were not worthy to be saved, nor did we have any good expectation from what we had done; but for your name's sake we expect to be saved, and this hope of salvation is left to us. Another, For the sake of fear I have waited for the Lord. Another, For the sake of
