of Solomon according to the promise built by the Spirit. 7. "Let us enter into his tabernacles, let us worship at the place where his feet have stood." He has changed the tense. But they say that, entering There we worship, believing the temple to have been deemed worthy of a divine epiphany. For this is the meaning of, "Where his feet have stood." For we believe the Divine to be not only incorporeal, but also uncircumscribable. But the divine Scripture speaks of him in a more corporeal manner, measuring its words for human ears. 8. "Arise, O Lord, into thy rest." They call the worship according to the law an "arising" of God, not as though he needs it, [nor is pleased by it,] but because he embraces the piety of those who offer it; and they entreat his grace to appear again, and to give the former glory to the temple. "You and the ark of your sanctification. "Since in the Holy of Holies lay the ark, holding the tablets of the law, and upon it lay the mercy seat, and through it certain messages of the divine epiphany were given to the high priest, he fittingly mentioned the ark. For God, who made heaven and earth, according to the voice of the blessed Paul, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Thus also prayed the wise Solomon: "If the 80.1908 heaven, and the heaven of heavens will not suffice thee." This the God of all also said: "Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What house will you build for me? Or what is the place of my rest?" 9. "Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness, and let thy saints shout for joy." When this happens, he says, and the house has been built, and the ark is again placed in the innermost sanctuary, the priests performing the worship according to the law will be justified, while those who have not shared in the priestly dignity, but nevertheless have been mindful of piety, will be filled with all gladness. 10. "For the sake of David your servant, do not turn away the face of your Christ." Here he calls the kingdom "Christ." And since their kings at that time were impious, they ask that for David's sake the lineage of the kingdom not be extinguished. Then they recall the promises that had been made. 11. "The Lord swore truth to David, and he will not turn back from it." He who promised, he says, is without falsehood, and is the fount of truth, and it is among the impossible things for the promise not to receive its fulfillment. "Of the fruit of your womb I will set upon your throne." This is one promise, and it received its fulfillment. For not only Solomon, but also those from Solomon, were deemed worthy of the royal thrones. But the Lord Christ confirmed the end of the promise, strengthening the kingdom of David. For this the blessed Isaiah also prophesied: "For a child is born to us, and a son is given to us, whose government is upon his shoulder, and his name is called Angel of great counsel, wonderful, counselor, mighty God, potentate, prince of peace, father of the age to come, amen." And a little later: "Upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom, to establish it from now and for all time." This promise, as I said, the Lord Christ confirmed; the other one, however, God did not give indefinitely. but he spoke thus: 12. "If your sons will keep my covenant, and these my testimonies which I shall teach them, their sons also shall sit upon your throne for ever." Such, then, was the promise of the Lord, but their transgression interrupted the course of the kingdom." For Solomon, immediately falling into impiety, drew upon himself the divine wrath. On account of this, the throne was usurped, and the ten tribes accepted the kingship of another; but in time the two tribes also were stripped of the Davidic kingship. 13. "For the Lord has chosen Sion, he has chosen it for his dwelling." From the beginning, he says, O Lord, you preferred this one over the other cities, and declared it your own dwelling place. 80.1909 14. "This is my rest for ever and ever." These things, he says, you have said, O Lord, and

ιγʹ.
