women). but that we may dance with angels. For if the body is shameful, behaving in such an unseemly way, much more so is the soul. Demons dance in such a way; the servants of demons mock in such a way. 4. But consider also the request itself. Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist. Did you see the shameless one, the one who had become wholly the devil's? And she remembers the dignity, and not even so is she ashamed, but as if speaking about some delicacy, so she asks for that sacred and blessed head to be brought in on a platter. And she does not even give a reason; for she had none to state; but she simply asks to be honored by the misfortunes of others. And she did not say, Bring him in here and slaughter him; for she could not have borne his boldness even as he was about to die. For she was afraid to hear his terrible voice even as he was being slaughtered; for he would not have been silent when about to be beheaded. For this reason she says: Give me here on a platter; for I desire to see that tongue silent. For she was not only eager to be rid of the rebukes, but also to trample upon and mock him as he lay dead. But God endured it, and neither did He send a thunderbolt from above and burn up the shameless face; nor did He command the earth to open and receive that wicked banquet; at the same time crowning the just man more greatly, and leaving much comfort for those who after these things suffer anything unjustly. Let us hear, therefore, all we who suffer terrible things while living in virtue at the hands of wicked men. For even then God endured the one in the wilderness, the one with the leather girdle, the one in the garment of hair, the prophet, the one greater than the prophets, the one of whom there is none greater among those born of women, both to be slaughtered, and by a licentious girl and a corrupt harlot, and this while he was defending divine laws. Considering these things, therefore, let us bear nobly all that we may suffer. 58.492 For even then this murderous and lawless woman, as much as she desired to avenge herself on the one who had grieved her, had so much power, and she satisfied all her wrath, and God allowed it. And yet he said nothing to her, nor did he accuse her, but he rebuked the man alone. But conscience was a bitter accuser. Therefore she was driven to greater evils, being pained and bitten, and she shamed everyone at once, herself, her daughter, her departed husband, the living adulterer, and she strove against her former deeds. For if you are grieved, she says, that he commits adultery, I make him also a murderer, and I make him the slayer of his accuser. Hear, all you who are excessively terrified of women. Hear, all you who propose oaths on uncertain matters, and make others masters of your own destruction, and dig a pit for yourselves. For so also this man was destroyed. For he expected her to ask some request worthy of the banquet, being a girl, and in a festival and a banquet and a public assembly asking for some cheerful and pleasant favor, not indeed to ask for a head; and he was deceived. But nevertheless none of these things will stand in his defense. For even if she possessed the soul of men who fight with wild beasts, he ought not to have been deluded, nor to have ministered thus to tyrannical commands. For in the first place, who would not have shuddered seeing that sacred head dripping with blood set forth at the banquet? But not the lawless Herod, nor his more accursed wife. For such are fornicating women; they are more audacious and more cruel than all. For if we shudder hearing these things, what was it likely that that sight would then produce? what would those reclining at table with him have felt, seeing the blood dripping from a newly-slaughtered head in the midst of the banquet? But that bloodthirsty one, more savage than the Furies, felt nothing at this sight, but even exulted in it; and yet if from no other cause, from the sight alone it was likely that she would then grow numb. But that murderous woman, thirsting for prophetic blood, suffered no such thing. For such is fornication; it makes people not only licentious, but also murderous. At any rate, women who desire to commit adultery are also prepared for the slaughter of their wronged husbands; and

Ἀλλ' ὅμως οὐδὲν τούτων αὐτοῦ προστήσεται. Εἰ γὰρ καὶ ἐκείνη θηριομάχων ἀνδρῶν ψυχὴν ἐκτήσατο, ἀλλ' αὐτὸν παραλογισθῆναι οὐκ ἔδει, οὐδὲ τυραννικοῖς οὕτω διακονήσασθαι ἐπιτάγμασι. Πρῶτον μὲν γὰρ τίς οὐκ ἂν ἔφριξε τὴν ἱερὰν ἐκείνην κεφαλὴν αἷμα στάζουσαν ὁρῶν ἐπὶ τοῦ δείπνου προκειμένην; Ἀλλ' οὐχ ὁ παράνομος Ἡρώδης, οὐδὲ ἡ ἐναγεστέρα τούτου γυνή. Τοιαῦται γὰρ αἱ πορνευόμεναι γυναῖκες· ἁπάντων εἰσὶν ἰταμώτεραι καὶ ὠμότεραι. Εἰ γὰρ ἡμεῖς ἀκούοντες ταῦτα φρίττομεν, τί εἰκὸς ἦν ἐκείνην τὴν ὄψιν τότε ἐργάσασθαι; τί παθεῖν τοὺς συνανακειμένους νεοσφαγοῦς κεφαλῆς αἷμα στάζον ὁρῶντας ἐν μέσῳ τῷ συμποσίῳ; Ἀλλ' οὐχ ἡ αἱμοβόρος ἐκείνη καὶ ἐρινύων ἀγριωτέρα ἔπαθέ τι πρὸς τὴν θεωρίαν ταύτην, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐνηβρύνετο· καίτοιγε εἰ καὶ μηδαμόθεν ἄλλοθεν, ἀπὸ τῆς ὄψεως μόνης εἰκὸς ἦν ναρκῆσαι λοιπόν.
