1. See Him everywhere withdrawing, both when John was delivered up, and when he was killed, and when the Jews heard that He was making more disciples.

For He wishes to manage most things in a more human way, since the time had not yet called for Him to reveal His divinity clearly.

Therefore He also told His disciples to tell no one that He is the Christ; for He wished this to become better known after the resurrection.

Whence He was not very harsh to the Jews who for the time disbelieved, but also forg 58.496 iving.

And having withdrawn, He does not go away to a city, but to a deserted place, and in a boat, so that no one might follow.

But consider for me how the disciples of John were henceforth more attached to Jesus.

For they are the ones who announced to Him what had happened; for having left everyone, they take refuge in Him from now on.

Thus, not a little along with the calamity, what had already been arranged by Him through that response also succeeded

But for what reason did He not withdraw before they announced it, although He knew what had happened even before they announced it?

Showing through all things the truth of the economy.

For He wished this to be confirmed not only by sight, but also by deeds, because He knew the malice of the dev 58.497 il, and that he would do everything to destroy this belief.

He Himself therefore withdraws for this reason; but the crowds do not even so depart, but follow, being riveted to Him, and not even the tragedy of John frightened them.

So great is longing, so great is love; thus it conquers and thrusts aside all dreadful things.

For this very reason they also immediately received their reward.

For when Jesus went out, it says, He saw a great crowd, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

For even if their attendance was great, nevertheless the things done by Him surpassed the reward of any zeal.

Therefore He also sets down mercy as the cause of such healing, an intense mercy; and He heals all.

And He does not require faith here.

For by coming to Him, and by leaving the cities, and by seeking Him with exactness, and by remaining, even when hunger compelled them, they show their own faith.

And He is also about to feed them.

And He does not do this of Himself, but waits to be asked, as I said, everywhere maintaining this practice, not to leap first into miracles, but to do so when called upon.

And why did no one from the crowds come forward and speak on their behalf?

They took exceedingly great pleasure in Him, and did not even perceive their hunger because of their desire to be near Him.

But not even His disciples, coming to Him, say, "Feed them"; for they were still in a more imperfect state; but what?

But when it was evening, it says, His disciples came to Him, saying; "The place is deserted, and the hour has already passed; send the crowds away, so that they may go and buy food for themselves."

For if even after the miracle they forgot what had happened, and after the baskets thought He was speaking about bread, when He called the teaching of the Pharisees leaven; much more, having not yet had experience of such a sign, would they not have expected anything of the sort to happen.

And yet, He had already healed many who were sick; but nevertheless, not even from this did they expect the matter of the loaves; so imperfect were they for the time being.

But consider for me the wisdom of the Teacher, how He clearly calls them forth to believe.

For neither did He say immediately, "I will feed them"; for it was not going to be easily accepted; but what?

But Jesus, it says, said to them; "They have no need to go away; you give them something to eat."

He did not say, "I give to them," but, "You give."

For they still regarded Him as a man.

But they were not even so aroused, but still speak to Him as to a man, saying; "We have nothing, except five loaves and two fish."

Therefore Mark also says that they did not understand what was said; for their heart was hardened.

Since, therefore, they were still crawling on the ground, then He finally brings in what is from Himself, and says; "Bring them here to Me."

For even if the place is deserted, yet He who feeds the whole world is present;

αʹ.
