these things were done for the perceptible and earthly Zion, nor should one envy the Jews who wished to interpret it thus; but if the very opposite is seen from the facts themselves, because Zion has been desolated by the siege of the enemies, it is necessary to understand Zion in a way fitting to the peace that has been granted, that is, either the 23.881 Church of God, or the heavenly one, which the divine Apostle presented, saying: You have come to Mount Zion, and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels in festal gathering, and to the Church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven. For here, with no sin being active, and no enemy of souls existing, the power of the bows has been shattered, and weapon and sword have been destroyed; so that it is said concerning those deemed worthy of the sojourn there: Pain and sorrow and sighing have fled away. You shine wondrously from the eternal mountains, the foolish of heart were troubled. Very consistently, after presenting the place of God, he teaches that the good things have been shut up within His place; but He sends forth rays as it were even to those farthest away. Therefore he says: You shine wondrously from the eternal mountains. And what were the eternal mountains, but Zion and Salem, which were mentioned before? So then from the heavenly heights, as if from certain eternal mountains, the gleams of the splendors of His divinity, and sending them forth even to those on earth, He enlightens the souls of the worthy, illuminating them with His Holy Spirit; these, therefore, He enlightens; but those unworthy of His lights He pursues and troubles by the providence of His just judgment. Therefore he adds: All the foolish of heart were troubled. For being truly foolish of heart, or according to Symmachus, proud of heart, they did not receive the splendors of the light of God, therefore they were troubled. And these same men, having slept their sleep, found nothing in their hands, being men of wealth. For having dreamed for a short while in the fantasy of mortal life, and having been very proud of their wealth, they thought they were something, luxuriating in the pleasures procured for them by their wealth; but when they awoke from their sleep, having departed from the present life, they found themselves having nothing, nor holding anything in their hands. Therefore it is said somewhere: Do not be afraid when a man becomes rich, and when the glory of his house is increased; for when he dies he will take nothing with him, nor will his glory descend with him. Hence, those truly foolish of heart were rightly troubled by the rebuke of the God of Jacob; or according to Symmachus, by the stern warning; for at that time, having come under the sentence of God's just judgment, they will rightly be troubled, since they slumbered mounted on their own horses, that is, on their licentious bodies; when they should have been awake and sober, remembering the divine command which says: Watch, for you know neither the day nor the hour. But they slumbered and slept their sleep, given over to dreams and phantoms, and using their own bodies as horses mad for females. All these, therefore, who are sometimes called foolish of heart, sometimes men of wealth, and now mounted on horses, for a time, during their mortal life, slumbered, or according to Symmachus, were stupefied, 23.884 being carried away by stupor and drunkenness of soul; then they slept their sleep, given over to vain fantasies; and finally, having awakened, they were troubled by the rebuke of the God of Jacob. And this was our Savior, the Word of God, who is recorded to have appeared to Jacob as God, who has received from the Father the judgment over all. You are fearsome, and who will stand against you? From that time is your wrath. To those who were unwilling to receive the gleams of the divine light He is said to be fearsome. Therefore above he addressed God, saying, You shine wondrously from the eternal mountains; but now to the same, You are fearsome, and

Πρὸς βραχὺ γὰρ ὀνειρώξαντες τῇ τοῦ θνητοῦ βίου φαντασίᾳ, καὶ μέγα φρονήσαντες ἐπὶ πλούτῳ, ἐνόμιζόν τινες εἶναι, κατεντρυφῶντες ταῖς ἀπὸ τοῦ πλούτου ποριζομέναις αὐτοῖς ἡδυπαθείαις· ὡς δὲ τοῦ ὕπνου διεγρηγόρησαν, μεταστάντες τοῦ παρόντος βίου, εὗρον ἑαυτοὺς οὐκ ἔχοντας οὐδὲν, οὐδέ τι ταῖς χερσὶ κρατοῦντας. ∆ιὸ λέλεκταί που· Μὴ φοβοῦ ὅταν πλουτήσῃ ἄνθρωπος, καὶ ὅταν πληθυνθῇ ἡ δόξα τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ· ὅτι οὐκ ἐν τῷ ἀποθνήσκειν αὐτὸν λήψεται τὰ πάντα, οὐδὲ συγκαταβήσεται αὐτῷ ἡ δόξα αὐτοῦ. Ἔνθεν εἰκότως οἱ ἀληθῶς ἀσύνετοι τῇ καρδίᾳ ἐταράχθησαν ἀπὸ ἐπιτιμήσεως τοῦ Θεοῦ Ἰακώβ· ἢ κατὰ τὸν Σύμμαχον, ἀπὸ ἐμβριμήσεως· τὸ τηνικαῦτα γὰρ ὑπὸ ἀπόφασιν γενόμενοι τῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ δικαιοκρισίας, ταραχθήσονται εἰκότως, ἐπειδήπερ ἐνύσταξαν ἐπιβεβηκότες τοῖς ἑαυτῶν ἵπποις, δηλαδὴ τοῖς ἀκολάστοις σώμασι· δέον ἐγρηγορέναι καὶ νήφειν, μνημονεύοντας θείου προστάγματος λέγοντες· Γρηγορεῖτε, ὅτι οὐκ οἴδατε τὴν ἡμέραν οὐδὲ τὴν ὥραν. Οἱ δὲ ἐνύσταζον καὶ ὕπνωσαν ὕπνον αὐτῶν, ὀνείροις καὶ φαντάσμασιν ἐκδοθέντες, ἵπποις τε θηλυμανέσι τοῖς αὐτῶν σώμασι χρησάμενοι. Οὗτοι τοιγαροῦν πάντες οἱ ποτὲ μὲν λεγόμενοι ἀσύνετοι τῇ καρδίᾳ, ποτὲ δὲ ἄνδρες τοῦ πλούτου, νυνὶ δὲ ἐπιβεβηκότες τοὺς ἵππους, τέως μὲν κατὰ τὴν θνητὴν ζωὴν ἐνύσταξαν, ἢ κατὰ τὸν Σύμμαχον, ἐκαρώθη 23.884 σαν, κάρῳ καὶ μέθῃ ψυχῆς περιενεχθέντες· εἶτα δὲ ὕπνωσαν ὕπνον αὐτῶν, φαντασίαις ματαίαις ἐκδοθέντες· καὶ τέλος διυπνισθέντες, ἐταράχθησαν ἀπὸ ἐπιτιμήσεως τοῦ Θεοῦ Ἰακώβ.
