always. For this mystery is a mystery of peace; it does not allow one to claim possession of money. For if He did not spare Himself for our sake, what would we be worthy of, sparing our money and not sparing our soul, for which He did not spare Himself? Therefore, God bound to the Jews a yearly remembrance of His own benefits by the feasts; but to you, so to speak, every day through these mysteries. Therefore, do not be ashamed of the cross; for these are our venerable things, these are our mysteries; by this gift we are adorned, by this we are beautified. And if I should say that He stretched out the heaven, spread out the earth and the sea, sent prophets and angels, I will say nothing equal. For the sum of good things is this, that He did not spare His own Son, in order that He might save His alienated servants. Therefore, let no Judas approach this table, no Simon; for both of these were destroyed through the love of money. Let us then flee this abyss, nor let us think it is sufficient for our salvation if, after stripping widows and orphans, we should offer a golden and jeweled chalice to the table. For if you wish to honor the sacrifice, offer the soul, for which it was also sacrificed; make this golden; but if this remains worse than lead and clay, while the vessel is golden, what is the gain? Let us not then consider this, how we may offer only golden vessels, but also how they may be from just labors. For these things are more precious than gold, things without greed. For the Church is not a goldsmith's shop, nor a silversmith's, but a festival of angels; therefore we need souls; for indeed God accepts these things for the sake of souls. That table then was not of silver, nor was the cup golden, from which Christ gave His own blood to the disciples; but all those things were precious and awesome, because they were full of the Spirit. Do you wish to honor the body of Christ? Do not overlook Him naked; nor honor Him here with silken garments, while outside you overlook Him perishing from cold and nakedness. For He who said, This is my body, and confirmed the matter with His word, is the one who said: You saw me hungry, and you did not feed me; and, Inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me. For this one does not need coverings, but a pure soul; but that one needs much care. Let us learn then to be wise, and to honor Christ as He Himself wishes; for to the one being honored, the most pleasant honor is that which he himself wants, not that which we think. Since Peter also thought he was honoring Him by preventing Him from washing his feet, but what was happening was not an honor, but the opposite. Thus you also honor Him with this honor, which He Himself ordained, by spending your wealth on the poor. For God has no need of golden vessels, but of golden souls. 4. And I say these things, not forbidding such offerings to be made; but urging that with these, and before these, almsgiving be done. For He accepts these, but much 58.509 more those. For in this case, only the one who offers is benefited, but in that case, also the one who receives. Here the matter seems also to be an occasion for ambition; but there, almsgiving and love for humankind is everything. For what is the benefit, when His table is full of golden cups, but He Himself is perishing from hunger? First fill Him who is hungry, and then from your abundance also adorn His table. You make a golden cup, and you do not give a cup of cold water? and what is the benefit? You prepare gold-embroidered coverings for the table, but you do not provide even necessary shelter for Him? and what is the gain from this? For tell me: if, seeing someone lacking necessary food, you neglected to relieve his hunger and only covered the table with silver, would he feel gratitude toward you, or rather would he not be indignant? And what? if seeing someone clothed in rags, and stiff with cold, you neglected to give him a garment, and instead built golden pillars, saying you were doing it in his honor, would he not say you were mocking him, and consider it an insult, and the very worst? Consider this also in the case of Christ, when a wanderer and a stranger comes around, in need of a roof; you, however
