Consider for me that day, when we stand before the judgment seat of Christ; when we beg to be shown mercy, and Christ, bringing them into the midst, says to us, 'For one loaf of bread and one obol, you wrought such a tempest in these souls'; what shall we say? And what defense shall we make? For that He will also bring them into the midst, listen to what He says: Inasmuch as you did not do it to one of these, you did not do it to me. For they will no longer say anything to us, but God will rebuke us on their behalf. For the rich man also saw Lazarus; and Lazarus said nothing to him, but Abraham spoke on his behalf. So it will also be with the poor who are now despised by us. For we will not see them stretching out their hands in a pitiful state, but being at rest; but we will take on their state; and would that it were only their state, and not the much harsher thing, punishment! Let us not, therefore, always seek security, that we may enjoy security there; but let us accept labors for the sake of virtue, and let us cut off excesses, and seek nothing more, but let us spend all that we have on those in need. For what defense shall we have, when he promises us heaven, but we do not even offer him bread? when he makes the sun rise for you, and provides the entire service of creation; but you do not even give him a cloak, nor do you let him share your roof? And why do I say sun and creation? He set before you his body, he gave his precious blood; but you do not even share a cup of water? But you gave once? For these also taste of flesh, who bring about death by famine. Do you not see how God has given us all things in common? For if He has allowed poverty in the matter of money, this itself is for the comfort of the rich, so that they may have a way to put off their sins through almsgiving to them. But you have become cruel and inhuman even in this.

Ἐννόησον γὰρ ὅταν προσελθόντα ἀπώσῃ τὸν πένητα, τίς ἔσῃ τὸν Θεὸν παρακαλῶν. Ὧ γὰρ μέτρῳ μετρεῖτε, φησὶν, ἀντιμετρηθήσεται ὑμῖν. Πῶς γὰρ ἄν τις παρεσκευασμένος εἰς ἁρπαγὴν, πρὸς τὸ ἐναντίον ἑαυτὸν ῥυθμίσειεν; ὁ γὰρ τὰ παρ' ἑτέρων λαμβάνων, πῶς δυνήσεται τὰ ἑαυτοῦ προέσθαι ἑτέρῳ; Καὶ γὰρ κύων μελετήσας σαρκῶν ἀπογεύεσθαι, φυλάττειν οὐκέτι δύναται τὴν ἀγέλην· διὰ τοῦτο τοὺς τοιούτους καὶ ἀναιροῦσιν οἱ ποιμένες. Ὅπερ ἵνα μὴ καὶ ἡμεῖς πάσχωμεν, ἀποσχώμεθα τῆς τοιαύτης θοίνης. Καὶ γὰρ καὶ οὗτοι σαρκῶν ἀπογεύονται, οἱ τὸν διὰ λιμοῦ θάνατον ἐπεισάγοντες. Οὐχ ὁρᾷς πῶς πάντα κοινὰ ἡμῖν ἀνῆκεν ὁ Θεός; Εἰ γὰρ ἐν χρήμασιν εἴασε πένεσθαι, καὶ αὐτὸ τῆς τῶν πλουτούντων ἕνεκα παραμυθίας, ἵνα ἔχωσι διὰ τῆς εἰς ἐκείνους ἐλεημοσύνης ἀποδύεσθαι τὰ ἁμαρτήματα. Σὺ δὲ καὶ ἐν τούτῳ ὠμὸς καὶ ἀπάνθρωπος γέγονας.
