A property of Substance is to be naturally predicated of and to appear in all things and of all things. Substance and nature are the same. For both are common and universal. inasmuch as they are predicated of many things differing in number and are never in any way limited to one person. Substance is that which is the same and one in number, receptive of contraries in turn. This definition the pagans generally applied to partial substance. Substance is that which is spoken of according to the underlying hypostases, and is contemplated equally and with equal honor in all of them. Substance is a common and indefinite name, applied with equal honor to all the hypostases under it, and predicated synonymously. Substance is that which exists not in one only, but in many and different things in number, and is not contemplated more in one and less in another. Substance is a name signifying simply the existence of beings, that is, the simple being of beings. for both an angel and a stone and all the rest are said to be. Therefore the name of substance is significant of being simply and of what all things commonly partake. Substance is that which subsists through itself and does not need another in order to be. They therefore call substance the simple existence of beings. They define substance as everything that is self-subsistent and needs nothing else in order to be. omicron.1483 Substance is properly and primarily everything which is self-subsistent and does not have its being in another. Substance is everything that exists and in fact subsists, and truly has being. Essential difference is a principle according to which the substance or nature remains undiminished and unmixed, at once immutable and unconfused, making a union to another different in species into one hypostasis and in no way departing from its natural position. Substantial union is that which brings together into one and the same substance those that are different in number and many hypostases. Substance. signifies existence. she who is and always exists. from the participle on. as from geron (old man) gerousia (senate), and hekon (willing) hekousios (voluntary), so also on (being) ousios (of the same substance), and the feminine ousia. If, therefore, something else is the same in substance, it is not the same also in hypostasis. and if something has a difference from another in hypostasis, this has a union with the same in substance. and if something happens to be one and united with another in substance, it is not united, but the same happens to be united in hypostasis. If therefore something composed with another by union is the same in hypostasis, that is, it has become one hypostasis with it, the same exists as different in substance. and if something happens to be one and united with another in hypostasis, this same thing is not one nor of the same kind in substance.
