and of pure health, and with much pleasure having sailed into the fair haven, may we attain to eternal good things; of which may it be granted to all of us to attain, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the dominion, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. 58.517 HOMILY 52. And Jesus went out from there and withdrew to the parts of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman, having come out from those borders, cried out to him, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, son of David; my daughter is grievously
possessed by a demon.” 1. But Mark says that He could not be hidden, having come into the house. But why
did He go to these parts at all? When He had delivered them from the observance of foods, then He finally opens a door to the Gentiles, proceeding on His 58.518 way; just as Peter, having first been commanded to abrogate this law, is sent to Cornelius. But if one should say, How then, when He says to His disciples, "Go not into the way of the Gentiles," does He receive this woman? First, we would say this, that what He commanded the disciples, He Himself was not subject to it; and second, that He did not go away as one about to preach; which is what Mark also intimated, saying that He also hid Himself, and was not hidden. For just as it was in the natural 58.519 order of things not to run to them first; so to drive away those who came to Him was unworthy of His loving-kindness. For if it was right to pursue those who flee, much more was it not right to flee from those who pursue. See, then, how the woman is worthy of every benefit. For she did not dare to come to Jerusalem, being afraid and considering herself unworthy. For that, if this were not so, she would have come there, is clear both from her present vehemence and from her having come out of her own borders. And some, allegorizing, say that when Christ went out of Judea, then the Church dared to approach Him, having also come out of her own borders. For, it says, "Forget your people, and your father's house." For Christ went out from His borders, and the woman from her borders, and so they were able to meet one another. For behold, a Canaanite woman, it says, having come out from her borders. The evangelist describes the woman, in order to show the miracle, and to proclaim her more greatly. For when you hear "Canaanite," remember those lawless nations who overturned the very laws of nature from their foundations. And having remembered them, consider also the power of Christ's coming. For those who were cast out, lest they should corrupt the Jews, these showed themselves so much more ready than the Jews, as to even go out from their borders and approach Christ, while they were driving away Him who was coming to them. Therefore, having approached, she says nothing else but, "Have mercy on me," and by her cry she creates a great scene. For it was a pitiable sight to see a woman crying out with such sympathy, and a woman who was a mother, and pleading for a daughter, and for a daughter so grievously afflicted. For she did not dare to bring the demon-possessed one into the Master's sight; but having left her lying at home, she herself makes the supplication. And she states only the affliction, and adds nothing more, nor does she draw the physician to her house, like that royal official, saying, "Come and lay your hand," and, "Come down before my child dies." But having related the misfortune and the severity of the illness, she puts forward the mercy of the Lord, and cries out loudly; and she does not say, "Have mercy on my daughter," but, "Have mercy on me." For she is insensible to the illness; but I am the one suffering countless terrible things, the one who is sick with awareness, the one who

Ἰδοὺ γὰρ γυνὴ Χαναναία, φησὶν, ἐξελθοῦσα ἐκ τῶν ὁρίων αὐτῆς. Κατηγορεῖ τῆς γυναικὸς ὁ εὐαγγελιστὴς, ἵνα δείξῃ τὸ θαῦμα, καὶ αὐτὴν ἀνακηρύξῃ μειζόνως. Καὶ γὰρ ἀκούσας Χαναναίαν, ἀναμνήσθητι τῶν παρανόμων ἐκείνων ἐθνῶν, οἳ καὶ τοὺς τῆς φύσεως νόμους ἐκ βάθρων ἀνέτρεψαν. Μνησθεὶς δὲ αὐτῶν, ἐννόει καὶ τῆς τοῦ Χριστοῦ παρουσίας τὴν δύναμιν. Οἱ γὰρ ἐκβληθέντες, ἵνα μὴ διαστρέψωσιν Ἰουδαίους, οὗτοι τοσοῦτον τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐφάνησαν ἐπιτηδειότεροι, ὡς καὶ ἐξιέναι ἐκ τῶν ὁρίων, καὶ προσιέναι τῷ Χριστῷ, ἐκείνων καὶ πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἐρχόμενον ἐλαυνόντων. Προσελθοῦσα τοίνυν οὐδὲν ἕτερόν φησιν, ἀλλ', Ἐλέησόν με, καὶ πολὺ διὰ τῆς κραυγῆς περιίστησι τὸ θέατρον. Καὶ γὰρ ἦν θέαμα ἐλεεινὸν, γυναῖκα ἰδεῖν βοῶσαν μετὰ συμπαθείας τοσαύτης, καὶ γυναῖκα μητέρα, καὶ ὑπὲρ θυγατρὸς δεομένην, καὶ θυγατρὸς οὕτω κακῶς διακειμένης. Οὐδὲ γὰρ ἐτόλμησεν εἰς ὄψιν τοῦ ∆ιδασκάλου τὴν δαιμονῶσαν ἀγαγεῖν· ἀλλ' ἀφεῖσα οἴκοι κεῖσθαι, αὕτη τίθησι τὴν ἱκετηρίαν. Καὶ λέγει τὸ πάθος μόνον, καὶ οὐδὲν πλέον προστίθησιν, οὐδὲ ἕλκει τὸν ἰατρὸν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν, καθάπερ ὁ βασιλικὸς ἐκεῖνος, λέγων· Ἐλθὼν ἐπίθες τὴν χεῖρά σου καὶ, Κατάβηθι πρὶν ἢ ἀποθανεῖν τὸ παιδίον μου. Ἀλλὰ καὶ τὴν συμφορὰν διηγησαμένη, καὶ τῆς νόσου τὴν ἐπίτασιν, τὸν ἔλεον τοῦ ∆εσπότου προβάλλεται, καὶ κράζει μεγάλα· καὶ οὐ λέγει, Ἐλέησον τὴν θυγάτερά μου, ἀλλ', Ἐλέησόν με.
