with their graven images they provoked him to jealousy. God heard and overlooked, and greatly despised Israel. Having enumerated the evils done by them in the land of promise, he next presents the just judgment of God, showing how reasonably wrath came upon them after all the things that had been said. For when they turned aside like a crooked bow, and when they angered him on their hills, and with their graven images they provoked him to jealousy, at that time God did not even look upon them, being such, nor deigned to see them; nor to hear their 23.933 impious voice. Therefore he adds: God heard and overlooked, according to Aquila, and did not postpone; no longer giving them any delay or postponement; but according to Symmachus, And he greatly rejected Israel. And God heard in this way, as was also said of the Sodomites: The voice of Sodom and Gomorrah cries out to me. For the very deeds of impiety of the impious cry out and shout; hearing these, God rejected the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent where he had dwelt among men. For in Shiloh the tent was first set up, where Eli and Samuel served as priests, as the Scripture of the Kingdoms presents. Therefore, he first rejected this tabernacle in Shiloh because of their impieties. Therefore, according to Symmachus it is said: And he cast off the tabernacle of Shiloh, and the tabernacle established among men. And how the ark was delivered to men because of the impieties of the people, and how the enemies seized it, and took it away with them, and how the sons of Israel were routed, and how the sons of Eli fell, being priests, and how their father perished at the news of his children, the first of Kingdoms presents. Therefore it is said here: And he rejected the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent where he had dwelt among men. And he delivered their strength into captivity. And instead of, their strength, Aquila interpreted it as their might. What could you say their might and strength and beauty, delivered into captivity and into the hands of the oppressor, was other than the ark, to which the present text alludes, saying: And he delivered their strength into captivity, and their beauty into the enemy's hand? But these things he delivered into the enemy's hand, but the people he crushed with the sword. Therefore it has been said according to Symmachus: And he gave his people over to the sword, and he overlooked his inheritance; and indeed when God overlooked them, the things that followed happened. And what were these? Fire consumed their young men, and their maidens were not lamented. And according to Aquila, They were not remembered; and according to Symmachus, They were not praised. For no longer were they given over to men with hymns and praises, as was customary for those being married, according to the interpretation of the others, because of the disaster that befell them then. But according to the version of the Seventy, having been led away captive, when they died they had no one to mourn them, because their relatives were not present with them; but also their priests fell by the sword (and these were the sons of Eli), and their widows will not be wept for. And it is possible to find in the first of Kingdoms, how, when the sons of Eli fell in the war, their wives, left widows, endured a terrible death. Therefore it is said according to Symmachus, And their widowed women did not weep; for they did not even survive to weep; but they also perished along with those being born, according to the telling of the story: 23.936 And it came to pass in those days, and the foreigners gathered for war against Israel; then, as the people went forth to the war, It says, a man of Israel stumbles; and there was a very great plague; and thirty thousand companies of Israel fell; and the ark of God was taken, and both the sons of Eli died, Hophni and Phinehas. And a man of Benjamin ran from the battle line, and came
