νγ΄. If you wish not to fall away from love according to God, neither let your brother go to sleep while being grieved with you, nor you go to sleep while being grieved with him; but Go, be reconciled to your brother, and having come, offer to Christ with a pure conscience, through fervent prayer [edit of the prayer] the gift of love.
νδ΄. If he who has all the gifts of the Spirit, but does not have love, is profited nothing, according to the Divine Apostle; how much diligence ought we to show, in order to acquire it?
νε΄. If Love does no wrong to a neighbor, how does he who envies his brother, and is grieved at his success, and stains his reputation with taunts, or in some way, plots against him with malice, not make himself a stranger to love, and liable to eternal judgment?
νστ΄. If Love is the fulfillment of the law, how is he who bears a grudge against his brother, and contrives plots against him [edit. contrives] and curses him and rejoices at his fall, not lawless, and worthy of eternal punishment?
νζ΄. If he who speaks evil of a brother and judges a brother, speaks evil of and judges the law; and the law of Christ is love, how does the slanderer not fall away from the love of Christ, and become for himself the cause of eternal punishment?
νη΄. Do not give [ed. give] your ear to the tongue of the slanderer, nor your tongue to the ear of the fault-finder, speaking or hearing with pleasure against your neighbor, so that you may not fall away from divine love, and be found a stranger to eternal life.
νθ΄. Do not accept abuse against your Father, nor encourage the one who dishonors him; lest the Lord be angered by your works, and destroy you from the land of the living.
ξ΄. Silence the one who slanders in your hearing, so that you do not sin a double sin with him; both by accustoming yourself to a destructive passion, and by not stopping him from speaking nonsense against his neighbor.
ξα΄. (973) But I say to you, says the Lord: Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you; pray for those who mistreat you. Why did he command these things? So that He might free you from hatred and grief and anger and resentment, and deem you worthy of the greatest possession of perfect love; which it is impossible for one to have, who does not love all people equally in imitation of God, who loves all people equally, and wills them to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
ξβ΄. But I say to you: Do not resist the evil one; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also; and to the one who wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak also; and whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Why? So that He might keep you free from anger and untroubled and without grief, and instruct that one through your forbearance, and, being good, bring you both under the yoke of love.
ξγ΄. In relation to whatever things we have at some time been passionate about, we also carry about passionate images of them. He, therefore, who conquers the passionate images, certainly despises also the things of which they are the images; since the war against memories is so much harder than the war against things, just as sinning in thought is easier than sinning in deed.
ξδ΄. Some of the passions are of the body, and some are of the soul. And the bodily ones have their origins from the body; but the ones of the soul, from external things. But both are cut off by love and self-control; the one, the passions of the soul, and the other, the passions of the body.
ξε΄. Some of the passions belong to the irascible part; and others happen to be of the desiderative part of the soul. But both are set in motion through the senses. And they are set in motion when the soul is found to be without love and self-control.

νγ΄. Ἐάν θέλῃς τῆς κατά Θεόν ἀγάπης μή ἐκπεσεῖν, μήτε τόν ἀδελφόν ἀφῇς κοιμηθῆναι λυπούμενον κατά σοῦ, μήτε σύ κοιμηθῇς λυπούμενος κατ᾿ αὐτοῦ· ἀλλ᾿ Ὕπαγε, διαλλάγηθι τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου, καί ἐλθών, πρόσφερε Χριστῷ καθαρῷ τῷ συνειδότι, δι᾿ ἐκτενοῦς προσευχῆς [edit τῆς εὐχῆς] δῶρον τῆς ἀγάπης.
νδ΄. Εἰ ὁ πάντα τά χαρίσματα τοῦ Πνεύματος ἔχων, ἀγάπην δέ μή ἔχων, οὐδέν ὠφελεῖται, κατά τόν Θεῖον Ἀπόστολον· πόσην ὀφείλομεν ἐνδείξασθαι σπουδήν, ἵνα ταύτην κτησώμεθα;
νε΄. Εἰ Ἡ ἀγάπη τῷ πλησίον κακόν οὐκ ἐργάζεται, ὁ φθονῶν τῷ ἀδελφῷ, καί λυπούμενος ἐπί τῇ εὐδοκιμήσει αὐτοῦ, καί σκώμμασι χραίνων τήν ὑπόληψιν αὐτοῦ, ἤ ἔν τινι, κακοηθείᾳ ἐπιβουλεύων αὐτῷ, πῶς οὐκ ἀλλότριον ἑαυτόν τῆς ἀγάπης καθίστησι, καί ἔνοχον τῆς αἰωνίου κρίσεως;
νστ΄. Εἰ Πλήρωμα νόμου ἡ ἀγάπη, ὁ μνησικακῶν τῶ ἀδελφῷ, καί δόλους κατ᾿ αὐτοῦ συσκευάζων [edit. σκευάζ.] καί κατευχόμενος αὐτοῦ καί ἐπιχαίρων τῷ πτώματι αὐτοῦ, πῶς ὁ παράνομός ἐστι, καί τῆς αἰωνίου κολάσεως ἄξιος;
νζ΄. Εἰ ὁ καταλαλῶν ἀδελφοῦ καί κρίνων ἀδελφόν, καταλαλεῖ καί κρίνει νόμον· ὁ δέ νόμος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐστιν ἡ ἀγάπη, πῶς τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Χριστοῦ ὁ κατάλαλος οὐκ ἐκπίπτει, καί αἴτιος ἑαυτῷ γίνεται κολάσεως αἰωνίου;
νη΄. Μή δῴης [ed. δῷς] τήν ἀκοήν σου τῇ γλώσσῃ τοῦ καταλάλου, μηδέ τήν γλῶσσάν σου τῇ ἀκοῇ τοῦ φιλοψόγου, ἡδέως λαλῶν ἤ ἀκούων κατά τοῦ πέλας, ἵνα μή ἐκπέσῃς τῆς θείας ἀγάπης, καί ἀλλότριος εὑρεθῇς τῆς αἰωνίου ζωῆς.
νθ΄. Μή καταδέχου κατά τοῦ Πατρός σου λοιδορίαν, μηδέ προθυμοποιήσῃς τόν ἀτιμάζοντα αὐτόν· ἵνα μή ὁργισθῇ Κύριος ἐπί τοῖς ἔργοις σου, καί ἐξολοθρεύσῃ σε ἐκ γῆς ζώντων.
ξ΄. Ἐπιστόμιζε τόν καταλαλοῦντα ἐν ἀκοαῖς σου, ἵνα μή διπλῆν ἁμαρτίαν σύν αὐτῷ ἁμαρτάνῃς· καί σαυτόν ὀλεθρίῳ πάθει ἐθίζων, κακεῖνον κατά τοῦ πλησίον φλυαρεῖν οὐκ ἀνακόπτων.
ξα΄. (973) Ἐγώ δέ λέγω ὑμῖν, φησίν ὁ Κύριος· Ἀγαπᾶτε τούς ἐχθρούς ὑμῶν· καλῶς ποιεῖτε τοῖς μισοῦσιν ὑμᾶς· προσεύχεσθε ὑπέρ τῶν ἐπιρεαζόντων ὑμᾶς. ∆ιά τί ταῦτα προσέταξεν; Ἵνα σε μίσους καί λύπης καί ὁργῆς καί μνησικακίας ἐλευθερώσῃ, καί τοῦ μεγίστου κτήματος τῆς τελείας ἀγάπης καταξιώσῃ· ἥν ἀμήχανον ἔχειν, τόν μή πάντας ἀνθρώπους ἐξ ἴσου ἀγαπῶντα κατά μίμησιν Θεοῦ, τοῦ πάντας ἀνθρώπους ἐξ ἴσου ἀγαπῶντος, καί θέλοντος σωθῆναι καί εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν ἀληθείας ἐλθεῖν.
ξβ΄. Ἐγώ δέ λέγω ὑμῖν· Μή ἀντιστῆναι τῷ πονηρῷ· ἀλλ᾿ ὅστις σε ῥαπίσει ἐπί τήν δεξιάν σιαγόνα, στρέψον αὐτῷ καί τήν ἄλλην· καί τῷ θέλοντί σοι κριθῆναι καί τόν χιτῶνά σου λαβεῖν, ἄφες αὐτῷ καί τό ἱμάτιον· καί τῷ ἀγγαρεύοντί σε μίλιον ἕν, ὕπαγε μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ δύο. ∆ιά τί; Ἵνα καί σέ ἀόργητον καί ἀτάραχον διαφυλάξῃ καί ἄλυπον, κἀκεῖνον διά τῆς σῆς ἀνεξικακίας παιδεύσῃ, και ἀμφοτέρους ὡς ἀγαθός ὑπό τόν ζυγόν τῆς ἀγάπης ἀγάγῃ.
ξγ΄. Πρός ἅπερ πράγματά ποτε πεπόνθαμεν, τούτων καί τάς φαντασίας ἐμπαθεῖς περιφέρομεν. Ὁ οὖν τάς ἐμπαθεῖς νικῶν φαντασίας, καί τῶν πραγμάτων ὧν αἱ φαντασίαι πάντως καταφρονεῖ· ἐπειδή τοῦ πρός τά πράγματα πολέμου ὁ πρός τάς μνήμας τοσοῦτόν ἐστι χαλεπώτερος, ὅσον τοῦ κατ᾿ ἐνέργειαν ἁμαρτάνειν, τό κατά διάνοιαν ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον.
ξδ΄. Τῶν παθῶν τά μέν ἐστι σωματικά, τά δέ ψυχικά. Καί τά μέν σωματικά, ἐκ τοῦ σώματος ἔχει τάς ἀφορμάς· τά δέ ψυχικά, ἐκ τῶν ἔξωθεν πραγμάτων. Ἀμφότερα δέ περικόπτει ἀγάπη καί ἐγκράτεια· ἡ μέν, τά ψυχικά, ἡ δέ τά σωματικά.
ξε΄. Τά μέν τῶν παθῶν, τοῦ θυμικοῦ· τά δέ τοῦ ἐπιθυμητικοῦ μέρους τῆς ψυχῆς, τυγχάνει. Ἀμφότερα δέ, διά τῶν αἰσθήσεων κινεῖται. Τότε δέ κινεῖται, ὅτε ἀγάπης ἡ ψυχή καί ἐγκρατείας, ἐκτός εὑρίσκεται.
