will trample me. Another says, Darkness will cover me. And night is illumination in my luxury. Another, Night is bright around me. What is this? I, he says, said these things, reasoning from the nature of things; but suddenly the terrible things were changed into good things; or rather, the terrible things were not changed into good things, but while the terrible things remained I enjoyed much kindness. For he did not say that the night vanished; but that the night was bright; that is, the night remaining night, and it is clear that the terrible things and the calamities—for these he indicates by the name of night—did not have the strength to trample me, but light came to be in the night, that is, help around me. For opposites both happen and appear in opposites, when God wills. Or did you not 55.415 see both a furnace being kindled, and dew whistling through, and neither was that quenched, nor this dried up, and hail and flame together? From where then did this happen? tell me. How it happened, I want to learn. Or rather I do not even wish to learn the manner; for it is not possible; but I believe in what has happened, and I worship the one who made it. For most of His works are in secret. Did you not see that while it was day the Egyptians groped as in darkness, and while darkness held everything the Israelites saw, and at the beginning again when darkness existed the light shone in the midst? For everywhere the Lord is the one who made the nature of things, not so as to produce what is not, but so that while they remain in their nature He prepares them to be shown otherwise. For darkness will not be darkened from you. Another, With you. And night will be illuminated as day. Another, But even night will appear as day. As its darkness, so also its light. Another, Its darkness and its light are alike. He said well, "From you," that is, "With you"; showing that, "If you wish, the darkness will not be darkness, but will display the properties of light." Therefore he added, "And night will be illuminated as day," making the former clearer, and he shows that the night will display the properties of day as its own. For whenever God wishes, the energy of the elements changes to the opposite, so precisely to the opposite, as it was assigned to its own from the beginning. For if you wish, such will the night be, and thus it will have the light assigned to it, just as the darkness. Therefore, indicating this too, he added: "As its darkness, so also its light." These things are said literally about the elements, but metaphorically about events. From which it is shown that God is able to make in tribulations as much relief for those who fall into them, as for those who are at ease, taking care of the tribulation. For this is the wonderful and paradoxical thing, which indeed also happened in the case of Joseph. For he did not enjoy as much relief and honor living in his father's house, as he did when he was sold and nourished in a barbarian's house. And through his very plotters the diadem was woven for him, and the purple robe was prepared, and this cause of dishonor became for him an occasion of honor and kingship. Have you seen how we have interpreted, "Night will be illuminated as day"? And concerning, "As its darkness, so also its light," again it is necessary to say the same thing; just as that, so also this will be hers, not by fantasy, but by you, the Lord of natures, transforming things. For you, Lord, possessed my reins; you helped me from my mother's womb. And what is the connection of this to what has been said? A great one indeed and very much connected. For since he spoke about His great power, he shows next that He has used this power for what is useful to men and for beneficence. For so that none of the foolish might say, "And what are these things to me, if he is great, and powerful, and foreknowing?" 55.416 show if we gain anything from this; he added, "For you possessed my reins," speaking of the whole man from a part. Ἐὰν γὰρ σὺ βουληθῇς, τοιαύτη ἔσται ἡ νὺξ, καὶ οὕτως ἕξει τὸ φῶς συγκεκληρωμένον, ὥσπερ τὸ σκότος. ∆ιὸ καὶ τοῦτο δηλῶν, ἐπήγαγεν· Ὡς τὸ σκότος αὐτῆς, οὕτω καὶ τὸ φῶς αὐτῆς. Ταῦτα εἴρηται μὲν κυρίως ἐπὶ τῶν στοιχείων, μεταφορικῶς δὲ ἐπὶ τῶν πραγμάτων. Ἀφ' ὧν δείκνυται, ὅτι δύναται ὁ Θεὸς ἐν ταῖς θλίψεσι τοσαύτην ἄνεσιν ποιῆσαι τοῖς ἐμπίπτουσιν, ὅσην ἂν τοῖς ἐν ἀνέσει οὖσι, προνοῶν τῆς θλίψεως. Τὸ γὰρ δὴ θαυμαστὸν καὶ παράδοξον τοῦτο, ὅπερ δὴ καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ Ἰωσὴφ γέγονεν. Οὐ γὰρ τοσαύτης ἀπέλαυσεν ἐκεῖνος ἀνέσεως καὶ τιμῆς τὴν πατρῴαν οἰκίαν οἰκῶν, ὅσην πραθεὶς, καὶ ἐν βαρβαρικῇ τρεφόμενος οἰκίᾳ. Καὶ δι' αὐτῶν τῶν ἐπιβούλων αὐτῷ τὸ διάδημα ὑφαίνετο, καὶ ἡ ἁλουργὶς κατεσκευάζετο, καὶ ἡ τῆς ἀτιμίας ὑπόθεσις αὕτη τιμῆς αὐτῷ καὶ βασιλείας ἀφορμὴ γέγονεν. Εἶδες πῶς ἡρμηνεύσαμεν, ὅτι Νὺξ ὡς ἡμέρα φωτισθήσεται; Πρὸς δὲ τὸ, Ὡς τὸ σκότος αὐῆς, οὕτω καὶ τὸ φῶς αὐτῆς, πάλιν ἀνάγκη τὸ αὐτὸ εἰπεῖν· ὥσπερ ἐκεῖνο, οὕτω καὶ τοῦτο αὐτῆς ἔσται, οὐ φαντασίᾳ, ἀλλὰ σοῦ τοῦ Κυρίου τῶν φύσεων τὰ πράγματα μετατιθέντος. Ὅτι σὺ ἐκτήσω τοὺς νεφρούς μου, Κύριε· ἀντελάβου μου ἐκ γαστρὸς μητρός μου. Καὶ ποία αὕτη ἀκολουθία πρὸς τὰ εἰρημένα; Πολλὴ μὲν οὖν καὶ σφόδρα συνημμένη. Ἐπειδὴ γὰρ εἶπε περὶ τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ τῆς τοσαύτης, δείκνυσι λοιπὸν, ὅτι τῇ δυνάμει ταύτῃ εἰς τὸ τοῖς ἀνθρώποις χρήσιμον κέχρηται καὶ πρὸς τὴν εὐεργεσίαν. Ἵνα γὰρ μή τις λέγῃ τῶν ἀνοήτων, Καὶ τί ταῦτα πρὸς ἐμὲ, εἰ μέγας, καὶ δυνατὸς, καὶ προγνωστικός; 55.416 δεῖξον εἴ τι κερδαίνομεν ἐντεῦθεν· ἐπήγαγε τὸ, Ὅτι σὺ ἐκτήσω τοὺς νεφρούς μου, ἀπὸ μέρους τὸν πάντα λέγων ἄνθρωπον. Οὐ μικρὸν δὲ τοῦτο εἰς ἐγκωμίου μέρος καὶ προνοίας, τὸ κτῆμα εἶναι Θεοῦ. Ὁ γὰρ κτώμενος καὶ
