and continually pursue it, and never have enough, what pardon could they have? what defense? Guard me, O Lord, from the hand of the sinner; from unjust men deliver me. Who have thought to trip my steps. The proud have hidden a snare for me; and with cords they have spread a snare for my feet; beside the path they have set a stumbling block for me. There is nothing more unjust than those who pursue wickedness, who before all others wrong their own souls. For when they themselves are the cause of scandal, when they prepare for the glory of God to be reviled by the foolish, when they do not pay what is owed, but having received both soul and body from the benevolent God, they are ungrateful in their returns, and enjoying a world so great and so good, they repay their benefactor with the opposite, what could be more unjust than these? what more ungrateful? and what is greater and more an excess of wickedness, is that they attempt to abuse others. For they thought, he says, to trip my steps. But if their thought did not come to fruition, this was the work of God's benevolence. For He Himself cut off their wicked plans. 3. And see how the wickedness was planned, and the plot with diligence. For they both hid, and stretched, and next to the path, so as by length, and by being hidden, and by stretching nearby, to catch and overcome. For they became creators of wickedness, stretching their snares from all sides, setting one work for themselves, to bring down. Do you wish to learn how the devil also lays such cords? See again the matter happening in the case of Job. For what was wider than those? what longer? what nearer, where he set the snare not only among 55.423 relatives, nor friends, nor in a wife, but in the very body itself? I said to the Lord: You are my God; give ear, O Lord, to the voice of my supplication. O Lord, Lord, the strength of my salvation. Another: The might of my salvation. Having spoken of the war and the plots, and having shown the intolerable terrors, he then flees to the invincible alliance, calling from heaven the helper who can resolve these things. This is a sign of a noble soul, this of a philosophical mind, when these things surround from all sides, not to flee to human alliance, nor to mortal reasonings, but to look to heaven, and to call upon God who is present everywhere, and not to be of despondency, and of clamor, and of confusion. And see how he constructs his argument worthily of himself. For he did not say, I have accomplished this and that, and I have worked this righteousness; but what? You are my God, putting forward the greatest justification for alliance, to take refuge in the Master, and Creator, and King. Give ear, O Lord, to the voice of my supplication, O Lord, Lord, the strength of my salvation. He said, the strength of salvation, showing that there is also a power of chastisement and punishment. But to me, he says, you have provided the strength of salvation. For you are able both to do evil and to destroy; but you have always used your power for my salvation. And see the longing of the one who speaks. For by the doubling and by adding, of my salvation, he shows his great disposition. You have overshadowed my head in the day of battle. Did you see the grateful soul? He reminds himself of former things, that He established him in safety. For this is the meaning of, You have overshadowed. And see how he shows the ease of God. For he did not say, Before this, but, On that very day, he says, when the terrors were raised, when the battle line was drawn, when I was in danger of the utmost extremities, then you established me in safety. For God needs no preparation or exhortation, knowing all things, the present, the future, and the past, and being able to do all things, and always being present, ready to help. Then declaring the
