I worship, and I will never cease to worship. And if he laughs, weep for him because he is mad. Give thanks to the Master, because He has bestowed on us such benefits, which one cannot even learn without revelation from above. For this is why he laughs, because a natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit. Since children also experience this, when they see something great and wonderful; and if you should lead a child into the mysteries, it will laugh. Indeed, the Greeks are like these children; or rather, they are even more imperfect than these, and therefore more wretched, because it is not at a tender age, but at a mature one that they experience the things of infants; whence they are not even worthy of forgiveness. But let us with a clear voice, and crying out loud and high, shout and say, even when all the Greeks are present, with the greater boldness, that our boast is the cross, and the sum of all good things, and our confidence and our entire crown. I wished that I could also say with Paul, that ‘through whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world;’ but I cannot, being held by various passions. Therefore I exhort you, and before you myself, to be crucified to the world, and to have nothing in common with the earth, but to love the fatherland above, and the glory and the good things from there. For we are soldiers of a heavenly King, and we are clothed with spiritual armor. Why then do we adopt the life of retailers and vagabonds, or rather, of worms? For where the king is, there the soldier must also be. For we have become soldiers, not of those far off, but of those near. For the king on earth would not endure all to be in the palace, nor beside his own ribs; but the King of the heavens wishes all to be near the royal throne. And how is it possible, he says, for those who are here to stand beside that throne? Because Paul, while being on earth, was where the Seraphim were, where the Cherubim were, and nearer to Christ than these shield-bearers are to the king. For these ones cast their glances in many directions; but nothing distracted him, nor drew him away, but he had his whole mind stretched toward the King. So that if we wish, this is possible for us too. For if He were separated by place, you would be rightly perplexed; but if He is present everywhere, He is near to the one who is zealous and focused. For this reason the Prophet also said: I will fear no evil, for you are with me; and God Himself again: I am a God at hand, and not a God afar off. Therefore, just as sins separate us from Him, so also do righteousnesses bring us together to Him; For while you are still speaking, He says, I will say, Behold, I am here. What father would so listen at once to his children? What mother is so prepared and 58.539 continually standing by, lest her children ever call her? There is no one, not father, not mother; but God stands continually waiting, if ever any of his servants should call Him, and never, when we have called as we ought, has He failed to hear. For this reason He says: While you are still speaking; I do not wait for you to finish, and immediately I hearken. Let us call Him, therefore, as He wishes to be called. And how does He wish? Loose, He says, every bond of iniquity, undo the knots of violent contracts, tear up every unjust document. Break your bread for the hungry; and bring the poor and homeless into your house. If you see one naked, clothe him, and from the members of your own seed you will not hide yourself. Then your light shall break forth as the morning, and your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you, and the glory of God shall encompass you. Then you shall call upon me, and I will hearken to you; while you are still speaking I will say, Behold, I am here. And who can do all these things? he says. But who cannot? tell me. For what is difficult among the things said? What is laborious? What is not easy? For so are they not only possible, but also easy, that many have even exceeded the measure of the things spoken of, not only tearing up unjust documents, but even stripping themselves of all their possessions; not receiving the poor with shelter and a table, but also with the sweat of the body, and laboring so that

Εὐχαρίστησον τῷ ∆εσπότῃ, ὅτι τοιαῦτα ἡμᾶς εὐεργέτησεν, ἃ μηδὲ μαθεῖν δύναταί τις χωρὶς τῆς ἄνωθεν ἀποκαλύψεως. ∆ιὰ γὰρ τοῦτο καὶ οὗτος γελᾷ, ὅτι Ψυχικὸς ἄνθρωπος οὐ δέχεται τὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος. Ἐπεὶ καὶ τὰ παιδία τοῦτο πάσχει, ὅταν τι τῶν μεγάλων ἴδῃ καὶ θαυμαστῶν· κἂν εἰς μυστήρια εἰσαγάγῃς παιδίον, γελάσεται. Τούτοις δὴ καὶ Ἕλληνες ἐοίκασι τοῖς παιδίοις· μᾶλλον δὲ καὶ τούτων εἰσὶν ἀτελέστεροι, διὸ καὶ ἀθλιώτεροι, ὅτι οὐκ ἐν ἀώρῳ ἡλικίᾳ, ἀλλ' ἐν τελείᾳ τὰ τῶν νηπίων πάσχουσιν· ὅθεν οὐδὲ συγνώμης εἰσὶν ἄξιοι. Ἐβουλόμην καὶ μετὰ Παύλου δύνασθαι λέγειν, ὅτι ∆ι' οὗ ἐμοὶ κόσμος ἐσταύρωται, κἀγὼ τῷ κόσμῳ· ἀλλ' οὐ δύναμαι, ποικίλοις πάθεσι κατεχόμενος. ∆ιὸ παραινῶ καὶ ὑμῖν, καὶ πρό γε ὑμῶν ἐμαυτῷ, σταυρωθῆναι τῷ κόσμῳ, καὶ μηδὲν κοινὸν ἔχειν πρὸς τὴν γῆν, ἀλλὰ τῆς ἄνω πατρίδος ἐρᾷν, καὶ τῆς ἐκεῖθεν δόξης καὶ τῶν ἀγαθῶν. Καὶ γὰρ στρατιῶταί ἐσμεν Βασιλέως οὐρανίου, καὶ ὅπλα ἐνδεδύμεθα πνευματικά. Τί τοίνυν καπήλων καὶ ἀγυρτῶν, μᾶλλον δὲ σκωλήκων βίον μεταχειρίζομεν; Ὅπου γὰρ ὁ βασιλεὺς, ἐκεῖ καὶ τὸν στρατιώτην εἶναι δεῖ. Καὶ γὰρ στρατιῶται γεγόναμεν, οὐ τῶν μακρὰν, ἀλλὰ τῶν ἐγγύς. Ὁ μὲν γὰρ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς βασιλεὺς, οὐκ ἂν ἀνάσχοιτο πάντας εἶναι ἐν τοῖς βασιλείοις, οὐδὲ παρὰ τὰς αὐτοῦ πλευράς· ὁ δὲ τῶν οὐρανῶν ἅπαντας ἐγγὺς εἶναι βούλεται τοῦ θρόνου τοῦ βασιλικοῦ. Καὶ πῶς δυνατὸν ἐνταῦθα ὄντας, φησὶ, παρ' ἐκεῖνον ἑστάναι τὸν θρόνον; Ὅτι καὶ Παῦλος ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ὢν, ὅπου τὰ Σεραφὶμ ἦν, ὅπου τὰ Χερουβὶμ, καὶ ἐγγυτέρω τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἢ οὗτοι οἱ ἀσπιδηφόροι τοῦ βασιλέως. Οὗτοι μὲν γὰρ πολλαχοῦ τὰς ὄψεις περιφέρουσιν· ἐκεῖνον δὲ οὐδὲν ἐφάνταζεν, οὐδὲ περιεῖλκεν, ἀλλὰ πᾶσαν τὴν διάνοιαν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα τεταμένην εἶχεν. Ὥστε ἂν βουληθῶμεν, δυνατὸν καὶ ἡμῖν τοῦτο. Εἰ μὲν γὰρ τόπῳ διειστήκει, καλῶς ἂν ἠπόρεις· εἰ δὲ πανταχοῦ πάρεστι, τῷ σπουδάζοντι καὶ συντεταμένῳ πλησίον ἐστί. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο καὶ ὁ Προφήτης ἔλεγεν· Οὐ φοβηθήσομαι κακὰ, ὅτι σὺ μετ' ἐμοῦ εἶ· καὶ αὐτὸς πάλιν ὁ Θεός· Θεὸς ἐγγίζων ἐγώ εἰμι, καὶ οὐχὶ Θεὸς πόῤῥωθεν. Ὥσπερ οὖν αἱ ἁμαρτίαι διιστῶσιν ἡμᾶς ἀπ' αὐτοῦ, οὕτω καὶ αἱ δικαιοσύναι συνάγουσιν ἡμᾶς πρὸς αὐτόν· Ἔτι γὰρ λαλοῦντός σου, φησὶν, ἐρῶ, Ἰδοὺ πάρειμι. Ποῖος πατὴρ οὕτως ἂν ὑπακούσειέ ποτε τοῖς ἐγγόνοις; ποία μήτηρ οὕτως ἐστὶ παρεσκευασμένη καὶ 58.539 διηνεκῶς ἑστηκυῖα, μή ποτε καλέσειε αὐτὴν τὰ παιδία; Οὐκ ἔστιν οὐδεὶς, οὐ πατὴρ, οὐ μήτηρ· ἀλλ' ὁ Θεὸς διηνεκῶς ἕστηκεν ἀναμένων, εἴ τίς ποτε καλέσειεν αὐτὸν τῶν οἰκετῶν, καὶ οὐδέποτε, καλεσάντων ἡμῶν ὡς δεῖ, παρήκουσε. ∆ιὰ τοῦτό φησιν· Ἔτι λαλοῦντός σου· οὐκ ἀναμένω σε πληρῶσαι, καὶ εὐθέως ὑπακούω. Καλέσωμεν τοίνυν αὐτὸν ὡς κληθῆναι βούλεται. Πῶς δὲ βούλεται; Λύε, φησὶ, πάντα σύνδεσμον ἀδικίας, διάλυε στραγγαλιὰς βιαίων συναλλαγμάτων, πᾶσαν συγγραφὴν ἄδικον διάσπα. ∆ιάθρυπτε πεινῶντι τὸν ἄρτον σου· καὶ πτωχοὺς ἀστέγους εἰσάγαγε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου. Ἐὰν ἴδῃς γυμνὸν, περίβαλε, καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν οἰκείων τοῦ σπέρματός σου οὐχ ὑπερόψει. Τότε ῥαγήσεται πρώϊμον τὸ φῶς σου, καὶ τὰ ἰάματά σου ταχὺ ἀνατελεῖ, καὶ προπορεύσεται ἔμπροσθέν σου ἡ δικαιοσύνη σου, καὶ ἡ δόξα τοῦ Θεοῦ περιστελεῖ σε. Τότε ἐπικαλέσῃ με, καὶ εἰσακούσομαί σου· ἔτι λαλοῦντός σου ἐρῶ, Ἰδοὺ πάρειμι. Καὶ τίς ταῦτα πάντα δύναται ποιῆσαι; φησί. Τίς δὲ οὐ δύναται; εἰπέ μοι. Τί γὰρ δυσχερὲς τῶν εἰρημένων; τί δὲ ἐργῶδες; τί δὲ οὐ ῥᾴδιον; Οὕτω γάρ ἐστιν οὐχὶ δυνατὰ μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ εὔκολα, ὅτι πολλοὶ καὶ τὸ μέτρον τῶν εἰρημένων ὑπερηκόντισαν, οὐκ ἄδικα γραμματεῖα διασπῶντες μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὰ ὄντα ἀποδυσάμενοι πάντα· οὐ στέγῃ καὶ τραπέζῃ τοὺς πτωχοὺς δεχόμενοι, ἀλλὰ καὶ τῷ τοῦ σώματος ἱδρῶτι, καὶ κάμνοντες ὥστε
