Turn us, and show your face, and we shall be saved, making the word common on behalf of those who have not yet turned, nor recognized his epiphany, and for this reason have not yet obtained the salvation that is from God. TO THE END, FOR THE WINEPRESSES. OF ASAPH. 80. Rejoice in God our helper, shout aloud to the God of Jacob. The psalms inscribed for the winepresses happen to be three in number: one of David, the eighth; one of Asaph, the one at hand; and of the sons of Korah, the 83rd. The 8th, then, clearly prophesied the calling of the nations, which the prophets of God, foreseeing by the divine Spirit, were utterly astonished at; wherefore they also cried out in amazement: O Lord our God, how wonderful is your name in all the earth! And the 83rd foresaw many tabernacles and many altars and many courts; namely the Churches of 23.969 God throughout the whole world, and the many altars in them; which indeed he presented, saying: How beloved are your tabernacles, O Lord of hosts! and again: My soul longs and faints for the courts of the Lord; and next: Your altars, O Lord of hosts. But the one at hand exhorts others to rejoice and shout aloud and sing psalms, but presents the rejection of the nation of the Jews and its cause, and this very consistently with the preceding prophecies. For since in the one before this he asked, saying: Why have you broken down her hedge, so that all who pass by the way pluck her? he resolves the difficulty, saying through the one at hand: If my people had heard me, if Israel had walked in my ways, I would have humbled their enemies to nothing; and he adds: And my people did not hear my voice, and Israel did not heed me. And I sent them away according to the desires of their hearts; they will walk in their own desires. Since, therefore, he presents their disobedience and unbelief, he reasonably changes the subject, and the Holy Spirit proclaims the good news of the calling of the nations, addressing all men and saying: Rejoice in God our helper. And he says these things from the person of the prophetic choir. For as in the 8th he said: O Lord our Lord, those saying these things appropriating God to themselves, because God had first become theirs; so also here the same ones, calling back those who were estranged and aliens, say: O you, leaving the gods erroneously believed in by you, come hastening to our God, and rejoice in him who has always become the helper of us who are dedicated to him. And who this was, they present next, saying: Shout aloud to the God of Jacob; for coming to the God who long ago appeared to our forefather, shout aloud, according to what was said also in the 65th: Shout aloud to God, all the earth. And who "all the earth" was, he clarifies who said: All you nations, clap your hands, shout aloud to God with a voice of rejoicing. Therefore, to the same people the choir of the prophets also speaks through the present text, saying: Rejoice in God our helper, shout aloud to the God of Jacob. And by 'God of Jacob' he means the Savior who appeared to Jacob in the form of a man; at which time Jacob also called the name of the place where God appeared to him, 'Form of God,' having said: For I have seen God face to face, and my soul was saved. To him therefore, as being our very king, he commands to shout aloud, sending up a victory hymn to him. And how he is established as king by the Father, he himself teaches, saying: But I was established as king by him on Zion his holy mountain. And he wants the called not only to shout aloud to the God of Jacob, but also to take up a psalm and give a timbrel, and a psaltery
