Therefore it has been said to those who have accomplished the first things: Sound the trumpet. But how does he want them to sound the trumpet, if not as those of old did before, who were carrying out the images, and the symbols and the types of the true things? And they sounded the trumpet on the new moon and on the solemn day of a feast. And this they did in the seventh month, in which, coming together, they celebrated the feast of Trumpets, doing this once a year. So the scripture of the law says: In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a rest, a memorial of trumpets; a holy convocation shall it be for you. Thus, just as they then sounded the trumpet on the new moon, he wants those who are called to sound the trumpet now also. And that day of the feast of Trumpets was a solemn day; for Moses says concerning it: You shall do no servile work. It shall be a day of sounding for you. Therefore it is also said here: On the solemn day of your feast. It was, then, a solemn day and a feast of nothing other than trumpets; hence it was also called the feast of Trumpets. There being three feasts in the same month: first, that of the Trumpets, celebrated on the new moon; second, that of the Atonement, occurring on the tenth day of the month; and third, that of the Tabernacles; he commands to imitate only that of the Trumpets, saying: Sound the trumpet at the new moon; or he might have said it more clearly thus. Just as at the new moon they once sounded the trumpet, going about every place to signify the feast, in the same way you also, whom the word commands, sound the trumpet. But he wants the preachers to the nations not to pay attention to the other Judaic observances, but to use only the proclamation, and to sound the trumpet of the salvific and evangelic word to all men. For Moses also made symbols of these very things, and this was a command specifically legislated for Israel, that it was necessary to sound the trumpet, and by means of the trumpet to signify to all the feast of the season. And this command came about according to the judgment, and according to the will and decree of the God of Jacob. For he himself, the God who of old appeared to Jacob in the form and figure of a man, was the one who commanded these things to be done figuratively by the people through Moses. And that 'to sound the trumpet' is said instead of 'to cry out' and 'to announce to all,' the Savior teaches, saying: When you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you. 23.976 He established it as a testimony in Joseph, when he went out of the land of Egypt; he heard a language which he did not know. The aforementioned command concerning trumpets, he says, he established as a testimony in Joseph; but according to Symmachus, 'He appointed it a testimony through Joseph;' and he gave the testimony as if bearing witness; and this was a sign of another matter; for it alluded to certain trumpets, whose works the apostles of our Savior and the preachers of the evangelical word in part fulfilled, sounding the trumpet into all the earth, and proclaiming to all nations the feast of the salvific theophany. But he who said these things teaches that the results of the more secret things will be through angels: 'For the trumpet will sound, and the dead in Christ will be raised first;' and again: 'In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet;' and again: 'The Lord himself will descend with a command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God.' And the Savior also initiated his disciples into these mysteries, saying: 'And they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.' 'And he will send his angels with a great trumpet, and they will gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.' But the resurrection of the dead will one day be through evangelical trumpets proclaiming the arrival of the kingdom of the Son of God;

Ὥσπερ ἐν τῇ νεομηνίᾳ ἐσάλπιζόν ποτε περιτρέχοντες πάντα τόπον εἰς τὸ σημῆναι τὴν ἑορτὴν, τὸν αὐτὸν τρόπον καὶ ὑμεῖς, οἷς ὁ λόγος προστάττει, σαλπίσατε. Βούλεται δὲ τοὺς κήρυκας τῶν ἐθνῶν μὴ ταῖς λοιπαῖς προσέχειν Ἰουδαϊκαῖς παρατηρήσεσι, μόνῳ δὲ χρῆσθαι τῷ κηρύγματι, καὶ σαλπίζειν εἰς ἅπαντας ἀνθρώπους τὸν σωτήριον καὶ εὐαγγελικὸν λόγον. Τούτων γὰρ αὐτῶν τὰ σύμβολα καὶ Μωσῆς ἐποίει, καὶ ἦν πρόσταγμα τῷ Ἰσραὴλ ἰδίως τοῦτο νενομοθετημένον, τὸ δεῖν σαλπίζειν, καὶ διὰ τῆς σάλπιγγος σημαίνειν τοῖς πᾶσι τὴν τοῦ καιροῦ ἑορτήν. Τὸ δὲ πρόσταγμα τοῦτο κατὰ κρίσιν ἐγένετο, καὶ κατὰ βούλημα καὶ κρῖμα τοῦ Θεοῦ Ἰακώβ. Αὐτὸς γὰρ τῷ Ἰακὼβ ὀφθεὶς πάλαι Θεὸς ἐν ἀνδρὸς εἴδει καὶ σχήματι, οὗτος ἦν ὁ ταῦτα καὶ διὰ Μωσέως εἰκονικῶς τῷ λαῷ πράττειν διαταξάμενος. Τὸ προλεχθὲν περὶ σαλπίγγων πρόσταγμα μαρτύριον, φησὶν, ἔθετο ἐν τῷ Ἰωσήφ· κατὰ δὲ τὸν Σύμμαχον, Μαρτυρίαν διὰ τοῦ Ἰωσὴφ ἔταξεν αὐτό· τὸ δὲ μαρτύριον ὥσπερ διαμαρτυρόμενος ἐδίδου· καὶ ἦν τοῦτο σημεῖον ἑτέρου πράγματος· ᾐνίττετο γὰρ περί τινων σαλπίγγων, ὧν ἐκ μέρους μὲν οἱ ἀπόστολοι τοῦ Σωτῆρος ἡμῶν, καὶ οἱ τοῦ εὐαγγελικοῦ λόγου κήρυκες ἀπεπλήρουν τὰ ἔργα, εἰς πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν σαλπίζοντες, καὶ πᾶσιν ἔθνεσι κηρύττοντες τὴν τῆς σωτηρίου θεοφανείας ἑορτήν. Τὰ δὲ ἀποτελέσματα τῶν ἀποῤῥητοτέρων δι' ἀγγέλων ἔσεσθαι διδάσκει ὁ εἰπών· Σαλπίσει γὰρ, καὶ οἱ νεκροὶ ἐν Χριστῷ ἐγερθήσονται πρῶτοι· καὶ πάλιν· Ἐν ἀτόμῳ, ἐν ῥιπῇ ὀφθαλμοῦ, ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ σάλπιγγι· καὶ πάλιν· Αὐτὸς ὁ Κύριος ἐν κελεύσματι καὶ ἐν φωνῇ ἀρχαγγέλου καὶ ἐν σάλπιγγι Θεοῦ καταβήσεται. Ταῦτα δὲ καὶ ὁ Σωτὴρ ἐμυσταγώγει τοὺς αὑτοῦ μαθητὰς, λέγων· Καὶ ὄψονται τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐρχόμενον ἐπὶ τῶν νεφελῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ μετὰ δυνάμεως καὶ δόξης πολλῆς. Καὶ ἀποστελεῖ τοὺς ἀγγέλους αὐτοῦ μετὰ σάλπιγγος μεγάλης, καὶ ἐπισυνάξουσι τοὺς ἐκλεκτοὺς αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῶν τεσσάρων ἀνέμων, ἀπ' ἄκρων οὐρανῶν ἕως ἄκρον αὐτῶν. Ἀλλ' ἡ μὲν τῶν νεκρῶν ἀνάστασις ἔσται ποτὲ διὰ σαλπίγγων εὐαγγελικῶν εὐαγγελιζομένων τὴν ἄφιξιν τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ·
