they say, Fill us with the Holy Spirit, that we may be found well-pleasing before you. Do you see how for the things of this life they do not pray, but only give thanks; but for spiritual things they both give thanks and pray? For, he says, Seek the kingdom of heaven, and all these things shall be added to you. Consider also another aspect of their philosophy. That we may be found, it says, well-pleasing before you, not being ashamed. For we do not care about the shame from the multitude, it says; but whatever men may say about us, laughing, reproaching, we do not even turn our attention to it; but our entire struggle is so that we may not be ashamed then. And when they say these things, they also bring in the river of fire, and the prizes and the rewards. They did not say, That we may not be punished, but, That we may not be ashamed. For this is much more fearful to us than Gehenna, to seem to have offended the Master. But since this does not frighten the majority, who are more coarse, they add: When you will render to each according to his works. Have you seen how much these strangers and sojourners have profited us, these citizens of the desert; or rather, these citizens of the heavens? For we are strangers to the heavens, but citizens of the earth; but these are the opposite. And after this hymn, having been filled with much compunction, and with warm and abundant tears, they thus go to sleep, drawing from it only enough to rest a little. And again they make the nights days, spending them in thanksgivings and psalmody. And not only men, but also women practice this philosophy, conquering the weakness of their nature by the abundance of their zeal. Let us then, we men, be ashamed of their vigor, and let us cease from being melted down by present things, by the shadow, by dreams, by smoke. For indeed the greater part of our life is spent in insensibility. For our first age is full of much folly; and that which proceeds toward old age again withers all sensation in us; and the time in between is short, which is able to enjoy luxury with sensation; or rather, not even that partakes of it purely, since countless cares and toils corrupt it. Therefore I beseech you, let us seek the immovable and immortal good things, and the life that never has old age. For it is possible even for one who lives in a city to emulate the philosophy of the monks; for it is possible for one who has a wife, and who is occupied in a household, both to pray, and to fast, and to be filled with compunction. Since also those who from the beginning were catechized by the apostles lived in cities, but displayed the piety of those who had occupied the deserts; and others again who were in charge of workshops, like Priscilla and Aquila. And all the prophets also had wives and households, like Isaiah, like Ezekiel, like the great Moses, and were in no way harmed in their virtue by this. Let us then, emulating these, give thanks to God always, let us always hymn him, 58.549 and let us take care for self-control and the other virtues, and let us bring the philosophy of the deserts into the cities; so that we may appear both well-pleasing to God and approved by men, and that we may attain the good things 58.550 to come, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom to the Father be glory, honor, might, together with the holy and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. 58.549 HOMILY 50. Truly, truly, I say to you, there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom. 1. For since he had discoursed much about dangers and death, and of his own passion, and of the slaughter of his disciples, and had enjoined those austere things; and some things were in the present life and at hand, but the good things were in hopes and expectations; such as, for those who lose their life to save it, that he is to come in the glory of his Father, to give out the rewards; wishing to fully convince their sight also, and to show what that glory is with which he is about to come, as far as it was possible for them to learn; even in the present life he shows them and
