them on account of the things they have dared. TO THE END, FOR THE WINEPRESSES, FOR THE SONS OF KORAH, A PSALM. 83. How beloved are your tabernacles, O Lord of hosts. The inscribed psalms of Asaph having left off, of which the first is the 72nd, and the last the 82nd, the present 83rd follows, inscribed for the sons of Korah, concerning whom we have discussed what seemed best in the introductory treatises. It is necessary to observe that all the psalms of Asaph happen to be twelve in number; and equal in number to these are also those inscribed of the sons of Korah. But of the sons of Korah, eight were joined together in sequence from the 41st psalm; and the remaining four are set forth here, beginning from the 83rd, and placed in sequence after those inscribed of Asaph. Likewise also of Asaph, eleven are joined together, those from the 72nd up to the 82nd. But the 12th is placed in order after the first eight of the sons of Korah, as if an exchange had taken place on account of the theories in the prophecies of each group which communicate with one another. Therefore the first of the sons of Korah were eight in number, all beginning from the 41st, and ending at the 48th. And they contained, to speak in summary, weeping and lamentation and mourning over the people of the circumcision, and the coming of Christ and the calling of the gentiles. But of the aforementioned eight, such was the theme; but of the four inscribed at present, also of the sons of Korah, the last two have encompassed his birth and death, as if the Word had intentionally reserved for the end of all things to reveal the prophecies concerning 23.1004 these matters. At any rate, much was the discourse about his birth, which he hinted at covertly in the 80th psalm; and more extensive and deeper was that about his death, which he undertook for the sake of men, which is the last of all those inscribed of the sons of Korah; I mean it is contained in the 87th. But the two psalms preceding these, both the one at hand and the one after it, prophesy his coming among men and the achievements upon it. Indeed the one set before us is inscribed, to the end, for the winepresses. There being three that have such an inscription, this happens to be one; likewise the 8th is also inscribed, and again the 80th. But of these, two were named psalms, both the 8th and the present one. Therefore they contain declarations of good things. But the 80th was indeed "For the winepresses," but not also a "psalm," because it contains certain sad things against Israel. And being three, those "For the winepresses," are assigned to three persons: the 8th to David, the 80th to Asaph, and the one at hand to the sons of Korah. And fittingly, the three are inscribed "to the end," as I think, on account of the prophecies in them, which were fulfilled at the end of the times, and at the consummation of the age. Of old, then, since there was one vineyard, about which it was said, "For the vineyard of the Lord of Sabaoth is the house of Israel;" there was, as it were, one winepress in it, which Isaiah mentions, speaking in the person of the Lord: And I built a tower, and dug a wine vat in it. It signified then, through the tower the temple in Jerusalem, and through the wine vat the altar by the temple, which he called not a winepress, but a wine vat, reasonably; since the bodily things preceded the spiritual, and before the New Covenant, the old one kept symbols and images of the true things among the Jews; for which reason the altar among them was called not a winepress, but a wine vat. And as of one vineyard, there was of old one winepress, and one temple altar. But the three psalms indicated in the present instance do not make mention of one, but of many winepresses, with the churches of our Savior throughout the whole world being indicated in this manner. Ὁ δὲ πʹ ἦν μὲν Ὑπὲρ τῶν ληνῶν, οὐ μὴν καὶ ψαλμὸς, διὰ τὸ σκυθρωπά τινα περιέχειν κατὰ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ. Τρεῖς δὲ ὄντες οἱ Ὑπὲρ τῶν ληνῶν, τρισὶν ἀνάκεινται προσώποις· ὁ μὲν ηʹ τῷ ∆αυῒδ, ὁ δὲ πʹ τῷ Ἀσὰφ, ὁ δὲ μετὰ χεῖρας τοῖς υἱοῖς Κορέ. Καὶ συμφώνως γε οἱ τρεῖς ἐπιγράφονται εἰς τὸ τέλος, ὡς οἶμαι, διὰ τὰς ἐν αὐτοῖς προφητείας, εἰς τὸ τέλος τῶν καιρῶν, καὶ ἐπὶ συντελείᾳ τοῦ αἰῶνος ἐπιτελεσθείσας. Πάλαι μὲν οὖν, ὡς ἂν ἑνὸς ὑπάρχοντος ἀμπελῶνος, περὶ οὗ εἴρητο, Ὁ γὰρ ἀμπελὼν Κυρίου Σαβαὼθ οἶκος τοῦ Ἰσραήλ ἐστι· μία ὥσπερ ληνὸς ἦν ἐν αὐτῷ, ἧς μέμνηται ὁ Ἡσαΐας ἐκ προσώπου τοῦ Κυρίου λέγων· Καὶ ᾠκοδόμησα πύργον, καὶ προλήνιον ὤρυξα ἐν αὐτῷ. Ἐσήμαινε δὲ ἄρα, διὰ μὲν τοῦ πύργου τὸν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις νεὼν, διὰ δὲ τοῦ προληνίου τὸ πρὸς τῷ ναῷ θυσιαστήριον, ὅπερ οὐ ληνὸν, ἀλλὰ προλήνιον ὠνόμασεν, εἰκότως· ἐπειδὴ τῶν νοητῶν τὰ σωματικὰ προηγεῖτο, καὶ πρὸ τῆς Καινῆς ∆ιαθήκης ἡ παλαιὰ σύμβολα καὶ εἰκόνας τῶν ἀληθῶν παρὰ Ἰουδαίοις ἐφυλάττετο· διόπερ οὐ ληνὸς, ἀλλὰ προλήνιον ὠνομάζετο τὸ παρ' ἐκείνοις θυσιαστήριον. Ὡς ἑνὸς δὲ τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος, μία ἦν πάλαι ληνὸς, καὶ ἑνὸς ναοῦ θυσιαστήριον.
